  • Mystery 'forest boy' shows face 10 months on

“Nearly a year after he first arrived here, the whole thing is still a mystery,” Thomas Neuendorf from the Berlin police told The Local.

“We have conducted all the investigations we know how. We have compared his DNA with international missing persons lists, we’ve made public appeals, we’ve sent his fingerprints around the world to see if he was involved in anything picked up by authorities anywhere but have come up with nothing.

“He has now – after intense discussions - finally given us permission to release a photograph of him and we are appealing for information about who he is.

“At first he spoke just English, but it would seem this is not his mother tongue, that he had learned it. But the specialists we had in could not say where he was from.

“Certain aspects of his DNA indicate he most likely comes from Europe.”

Neuendorf said the boy was still sticking to his original story - that his mother Doreen died in a car accident when he was 12, and his father Ryan had taken him to live in the woods for about five years. They slept in a tent or found shelter in hunting sheds.

Ray says that one day his father died after falling over last August, and he buried him in a shallow grave and followed his emergency instructions – walk north until you find civilisation and ask for help.

He showed up in central Berlin last September and told astonished officials he had no idea where he was from – but that he had walked for five days to reach them.

“We thought all sorts of things at first – that he was doing it for a bet or something,” said Neuendorf.

“There were things that did not fit with his story – he was relatively clean and the tent he had with him did not look like it had been used for five years. It was also simply unimaginable that someone could live near Berlin for such a long time without being seen.

“But such a long time afterwards and we are still mystified as to who he is.”

A few more details have come to light – Ray told his carers he saw his father getting money “out of the wall,” said Neuendorf, and they would go shopping.

“He remembers the word Lidl, and it would seem the pair of them went shopping – they didn’t just live off berries. But he says he cannot remember anything like a town name or a street name.”

Ray also said they once saw a “vehicle on rails” and said he had wanted to go on it, but that his father said it was too expensive, said Neuendorf.

“There is something strange about this whole story,” he said. “Whenever we want to go into details with him, he breaks it off, saying both of his parents are dead, and that no-one else knows him. He seems to have an astounding lack of interest in finding out who he is.”

But Ray is healthy, and seems to be happy enough in the youth housing project where he is living – and although no-one is sure how old he is, it is clear he cannot stay there forever.

“At some time he will have to be given a family name, a nationality and an official date of birth – that is the law in this country,” said Neuendorf.

“So we are now appealing for witnesses who may have seen him – perhaps with his father – when they were in a shop or something. We haven’t managed to get anything in all this time. It really is a mystery.”

Ray is described as being between 16 and 20 years old, 1.80 metres tall with dark blonde hair and blue eyes. He has three scars on his forehead and three smaller ones on his chin as well as a 1cm scar on his right arm. His teeth show no sign of dental work.

T-Mobile Galaxy S II Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich Update Rolling Out Now

T-Mobile has started rolling out the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for its Galaxy S II variant in the United States. The carrier had promised a few weeks ago that it will start rolling out the update beginning from 14th July, and has managed to keep it words.
The Ice Cream Sandwich update for the T-Mobile Galaxy S II brings with it many new features and enhancements, bug fixes and none of the visual goodness introduced by Google in stock Android 4.0. Below is the full change-log of the update -:
    • Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
    • CMAS Improvement
    • Wi-Fi Calling Enhancements
    • Voicemail Enhancements
Other features introduced by this update include Face Unlock, slightly refreshed UI elements, better performance and stability, a new browser with support for bookmark sync and more.
T-Mobile Galaxy S II owners can update their handset only by using Samsung KIES software, as the update is not being rolled out via OTA. Users also need to make sure that they are running on Android 2.3.6 (TKID/KL1/LDE) update with at least 50% of battery life before proceeding to update their phone to Ice Cream Sandwich.

Samsung Galaxy S III – First Impressions of the ‘Nature-Inspired’ Superphone

The Samsung Galaxy S III is perhaps the most exciting smartphone the industry has ever seen. The phone, which was initially slammed badly by critics for not being up to their expectations has been smashing every single sales record since the day its pre-order page went live.
India is one of the few lucky countries where this sleek piece of technology was first launched and without wasting much time, I quickly went to a Samsung store and returned with this superphone. It has been only two days since then, but I’m already in love with it. I often find myself holding the phone in my hands and adoring its beauty. No matter what other people say, the Galaxy S III is undoubtedly the best phone I’ve ever handled.

The Super AMOLED HD screen of the Galaxy S III is the foremost thing that comes into notice. It’s huge, black as an onyx and stunning in all its beauty. The Galaxy S3’s 1280×720 (SAMOLED HD) screen is one of the most impressive screens I’ve ever seen, which produces eye popping colors that are bright, vibrant and rich in colors, especially when set to Dynamic screen mode which gives a stunning picture.

Obviously, it does not produce images as sharp as the Super-LCD 2 display of the HTC One X due the pentile structure of pixels in SAMOLED HD screen, but the difference is imperceptible in daily use and not at all a ‘bummer’. On a comparison note, the Galaxy S III easily beats One X when it comes to creating more vivid colors and blacker ‘blacks’.
    display
The display is remarkably visible under direct sunlight, thanks to its screen technology that has the highest contrast ratio in any smartphone.
The Galaxy S II is also the first phone to boast a coating of Gorilla Glass 2 and surprisingly, the screen is (really) a lot smoother than the Galaxy S II’s screen. It’s now also resistant to fingerprint smudges, something which was very frustrating about my Galaxy S II.
    Samsung-Galaxy-S3
Moving on to the aesthetics, contrary to what many ‘expert’ people have commented about the phone’s design, the Galaxy S III is a very beautiful phone. In fact, it even puts my Galaxy S II to shame when held together.
The phone feels very solid and better than what I was expecting before handling it. The Hyper-Glaze coating on the phone feels great in hands. As my personal opinion, the smooth and glossy back-cover feels even better than the mesh textured back cover of Galaxy S II. However, it does invite a lot of fingerprints.
On the sides, the Galaxy S III flaunts a wrapping of a silver band. This combination of silver band and glossy Hyper-Glaze coating gives an amazing fake perception of premium brushed aluminum on a glass build of the phone. Even if it’s not real, it does look and feel really good.
Another interesting thing to note about this phone is that, unlike the recent trend in smartphones, the Galaxy S III is a tad heavier (by a few grams) and thicker than the Galaxy S II. Despite that, its uniform thickness makes this difference unnoticeable and is still very light to hold.
An LED is also present this time, which was missing from the first two Galaxy S phones. I had to previously rely on third party apps like noLED and BLN to keep track of missed events, but thankfully they are no longer needed now.
The arrangement of physical buttons remain the same as any other Samsung phone, one Home button being at the bottom center and two capacitive buttons beside it. This time, the size of the home button has been narrowed down, which does look good, but is a bit harder to press, which is my biggest gripe with this phone. However, the volume and power buttons are actually softer and easier to press than the stiff buttons in Galaxy S II.

Hungry Jack syrup truck spills onto Buttermilk Pike

A highway truck accident never sounded so delicious. A semitrailer hauling Hungry Jack pancake syrup collided with a highway median at the Buttermilk Pike overpass in northern Kentucky, causing the truckload of syrup to spill all over the highway.
"Every lane of southbound I-75 was covered in pancake syrup," Fort Mitchell Police Officer Mark Spanyer told the Kentucky Enquirer. "It was a royal pain in the butt."
The semitrailer dumped hundreds of boxes of Hungry Jack syrup bottles.
Thankfully, no one was seriously hurt in the accident, including the driver. Spanyer said the incident occurred on Thursday when the Hungry Jack driver maneuvered to avoid a car on the highway with a blown-out tire. While the driver was able to avoid the car, he then crashed into a median on the Buttermilk Pike overpass.

Sadly, cleanup crews were forced to use sand, rather than giant pancakes, to clean up the mess.

‘UFO’ over Middle East reportedly a Russian missile test

A mysterious light seen over several countries in the Middle East on Thursday night has been confirmed by multiple sources as a Russian intercontinental ballistic missile test. There had been speculation that the strange sight, which was seen over countries in the region including Syria, Israel and Iran, might have been some sort of unidentified aircraft.

The object was first seen when journalist Rob Stevens posted an image to his Twitter account. Stevens wrote, "Just Seen a strange UFO over Fheis. It hovered, and then made a swirl and disappeared."

Ynet News reports that the missile test resulted in hundreds of calls to Israeli police stations. The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed that the missile test originated in the Astrakhan region in central Russia and was spotted in several other countries along the way, including Armenia, Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan.

"It most likely spun out of control and its remnants and the fuel was what people saw," Israeli Astronomical Association Chairman Dr. Yigal Pat-El told Ynet News. "It reached a height of 200-300 kilometers and that's why it was seen from so many locations."

The Jerusalem Post Yaakov Lappin also confirmed the test, tweeting: "Mysterious light explained. Russia announces it carried out successful inter-continental ballistic missile test."

You can view several other videos of the missile sighting taken from Syria and one allegedly shot in Iran.

Video game players may appreciate the observation of one particular YouTube commenter, who said of the video Alan Wake: "IN SPACE!_ Great flashlight."

50 Cent, Oprah Feud: Pair Resolves Conflict On 'Oprah's Next Chapter'

The beef is over: Oprah and 50 Cent have officially hugged it out.

The duo had quite the tete-a-tete on "Oprah's Next Chapter," hashing out a number of the conflicts that had led to a six-year feud. Chief among the TV queen's complaints was the rapper's criticism that Oprah was creating television for "white women as old as [his] grandmother" -- and the fact that he named a female dog after her.

"That was not a compliment," the TV host told Curtis Jackson. "I heard you had a bitch named Oprah!"

"At the time, I was just looking at the situation and I saw I was developing negative feelings for someone who doesn't even know me - and I gave it to the dog," he responded.

    50 cent oprah

Oprah's famed crusade against the use of the N-word in rap also rubbed Jackson the wrong way, though they eventually agreed to disagree on the matter. "When you're actually using it with malice in your heart, you can feel the difference," Jackson said.

The interview -- which took place at his grandmother's house in Queens, where he was raised -- also revealed a softer side of Jackson. "I've had to be my grandmother's baby in the house and be more like what people perceive 50 Cent as outside," he said. "I'm not even allowed to curse around her."

Perhaps most surprising, however? 50 Cent is a pro-toenail painter. He revealed that he used to rub his grandmother's feet and paint her toenail's "like we in a nail shop." What a guy!

KKK wants to ‘adopt’ highway in Georgia

A group affiliated with the Ku Klux Klan wants to "adopt" a mile-long stretch of highway in Georgia.
According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Georgia Department of Transportation is currently reviewing the May 21 request—filed by International Keystone Knights of the KKK in Union County—to clean up part of Route 515 in the Appalachian Mountains in Blairsville.
"Any civic-minded organization, business, individual, family, city, county, state, or federal agency is welcome to volunteer in the Georgia Adopt-A-Highway program," according to the department's website.
The state attorney general's office is expected to decide Monday.

"We just want to clean up the doggone road," Harley Hanson, who filed the application, told the paper. "We're not going to be out there in robes."
But Rep. Tyrone Brooks, head of the Georgia Association of Black Elected Officials, called on state officials to reject the application.
"This is about membership building and rebranding their name in a public way," Brooks said. "What's next, are we going to let neo-Nazis or the Taliban or al-Qaida adopt highways?"

"We are good, decent Christian Americans," Hanson, the group's "exalted cyclops," added. "What we're trying to do is to work with the local community."
It's not the first time the KKK has participated in an "Adopt-a-Highway" program.
In 2000, the KKK successfully adopted part of Interstate 55 south of St. Louis after a federal judge ruled that the Missouri Department of Transportation could not keep the group out of the cleanup program.

House committee schedules contempt vote against Holder

CBS News has learned the House Oversight Committee will vote next week on whether to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress. It's the fourth time in 30 years that Congress has launched a contempt action against an executive branch member. This time, the dispute stems from Holder failing to turn over documents subpoenaed on October 12, 2011 in the Fast and Furious "gunwalking" investigation. The Justice Department has maintained it has cooperated fully with the congressional investigation, turning over tens of thousands of documents and having Holder testify to Congress on the topic at least eight times. However, Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., says the Justice Department has refused to turn over tens of thousands of pages of documents. Those include materials created after Feb. 4, 2011, when the Justice Department wrote a letter to Congress saying no gunwalking had occurred. The Justice Department later retracted the denial. "The Obama Administration has not asserted Executive Privilege or any other valid privilege over these materials and it is unacceptable that the Department of Justice refuses to produce them. These documents pertain to Operation Fast and Furious, the claims of whistleblowers, and why it took the Department nearly a year to retract false denials of reckless tactics," Issa wrote in an announcement of the vote to be released shortly. It will reveal the vote is scheduled for Wednesday, June 20. Read the memo and draft version of contempt report (PDF) Gov't answers CBS News "Fast and Furious" records requests with blank pages Republicans prep contempt citation against Holder over Fast and Furious ATF let "gunwalking" suspect go after arrest Issa says the Justice Department can still put a stop to the contempt process at any time by turning over the subpoenaed documents. If the House Oversight Committee approves the contempt citation, the matter would likely be scheduled for a full House vote. For several weeks, there has been closed-door discussions and debate among House Republicans as to whether to move forward with contempt. Some have expressed concern that it could distract from the Republican's focus on the economy in this election year. Led by Republicans Senator Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, and Issa, Congress' investigation into Fast and Furious is now in its second year. In the ATF operation, agents allowed thousands of weapons to "walk" into the hands of Mexican drug cartels in the hope it would somehow help ATF take down a major cartel. Some of the weapons were used in the murder of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry at the hands of illegal immigrants crossing into Arizona. Mexican press reports say hundreds of Mexicans have died at the hands of the trafficked weapons. The story was exposed nationally for the first time by CBS News in February 2011. Democrats on the House Oversight Committee have called the Republicans' move to find Holder in contempt a politically-motivated "witch hunt." In 1983, Congress found EPA administrator Anne Gorsuch Burford in contempt for failing to produce subpoenaed documents. In 1998, the GOP-controlled House Oversight committee found Attorney General Janet Reno in contempt for failing to comply with a subpoena on campaign finance law violations.

Sheer delight! Jessica Chastain leads the glamour at the Tony Awards in a see-through nude dress

Outfits like this are usually reserved for the Oscars.
But Jessica Chastain injected some Tinseltown magic into the Tony Awards red carpet this evening.
The flame-haired actress, 31, proudly showed off her feminine curves in a see-through Marios Schwab dress while attending the New York event held at Manhattan's Beacon Theatre.

The knee-length frock was detailed with beads and pearls, while appearing to be transparent.
However, Academy Award-nominee protected her modesty with a flesh-coloured corset beneath which acted as an additional layer and covered her assets as a bra would normally do.

Daring: Jessica's gown was revealing from the front, but more protective of her modesty from the rear
While the Tonys recognise achievements in live Broadway theatre, and Jessica is a silver screen star, she will actually be heading to the stage this autumn to play the leading role in The Heiress.
The rising star is already on her way to global domination, having won a BAFTA and Golden Globe for her efforts in The Globe.

Syria's steroid-mad 'Ghost' killers who keep Assad in power by slaughtering women and children

These are the 'Ghost' killer thugs pumped up on steroids who are proving key to keeping Syria's brutal President Bashar Assad in power. Covered in tattoos of images of their leader, they are blamed for roaming the nation massacring children and women by slitting their throats or shooting them at point-blank range. Wielding AK-47s and machetes, they are said to carry out the government's dirty work so officials can claim the rampages are not being sponsored by the state. A massacre of 108 civilians in Houla two weeks ago, including 49 children, has been blamed on the group who fanatically follow the Muslim Alawite sect. They are also reported to have shot dead 12 workers in Qusayr and 78 villagers in Qubair last week. 'They had huge muscles, and big bellies and beards. They took steroids to pump up their bodies. I had to talk to them like children as they like people with low intelligence. He delivered them Sunday night at a ceremony in Jerusalem commemorating fallen soldiers. Syrian activists estimate more than 13,000 people have died since an uprising against the Syrian regime erupted 15 months ago, drawing a bloody crackdown. Israel has been watching the carnage in neighboring Syria with increasing concern. The two countries have fought major wars and multiple attempts to reach a peace deal failed. Syria has strong ties to Iran, Israel's most fearsome enemy, and to Palestinian and Lebanese militants that have warred with Israel. 'That is what makes them so terrifying — the combination of strength and blind allegiance to the regime.' Emergence of the death squad pictures comes after William Hague said yesterday he may have to send troops to Syria if the country spirals into a Bosnian-style civil war. The Foreign Secretary said Britain would have to 'greatly increase our support for the opposition' if the current United Nations plan for a ceasefire fails, as his office now fears. Mr Hague repeatedly refused to rule out military action yesterday if Syria descends into 'terrible' sectarian violence. And he twice compared the violence raging in the Arab state to the conflict in Bosnia, where 12,000 British soldiers were eventually sent, rather than Libya, where the Government resisted sending in ground troops. Mr Hague told the BBC: 'The reason I don’t rule things out is because we really don't know now how this situation is going to develop or how terrible it is going to become. 'Increasingly the analogy is not with Libya last year but with Bosnia in the 1990s. 'We are on the edge of that kind of sectarian murder on a large scale. So who knows what may be required from the international community to try to deal with that, if it gets going in that way.' As violence continued to rage yesterday, claiming at least 38 lives, Mr Hague reiterated his message on Sky News. He said Syria is now 'on the edge of a sectarian conflict in which neighbouring villages are attacking and killing each other so I don’t think we can rule anything out'.

‘Once’ is big winner at Tony Awards

With its folk-driven score and its wistful, meditative tone, “Once’’ is not your typical Broadway show. But that didn’t prevent it from taking home eight Tony Awards on Sunday night, including best musical. “The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess,’’ which premiered at the American Repertory Theater last fall before moving to Broadway, won the Tony Award for best revival of a musical. As expected, Audra McDonald’s devastating performance as Bess in “Porgy and Bess’’ earned her the Tony for best actress in a musical. It is McDonald’s fifth Tony, and her first for a leading role. In an emotional acceptance speech, McDonald said: “I was a little girl with a pot belly and Afro puffs, hyperactive and overdramatic, and I found the theater and I found my home.’’ In perhaps the night’s biggest upset, James Corden won for best actor in a play for his uproarious, pratfalling performance in “One Man, Two Guvnors,’’ a British farce. Philip Seymour Hoffman had been expected to win for his performance as Willy Loman in “Death of a Salesman.’’ Corden also struggled with his emotions during a speech in which he called Hoffman “my favorite actor in the world.’’ Nina Arianda won the Tony for best actress in a play for her protean performance in “Venus in Fur’’ as Vanda, a seemingly bumbling actress whose audition with a playwright-director for a part in his new drama spirals into a series of mind games that end with him tied in knots, figuratively and literally. Bruce Norris’s “ Clybourne Park,’’ which manages to be both satirical and dead-serious in its examination of race relations, won the Tony for best play. When he accepted the Tony for “Porgy and Bess,’’ producer Jeffrey Richards saluted ART artistic director Diane Paulus, who helmed the musical in Cambridge and New York, as a “visionary director,’’ and called the ART “a great home to incubate’’ the production. Paulus lost out in the competition for best direction of a musical to John Tiffany, director of “Once.’’ “Porgy and Bess,’’ the story of the love between a crippled beggar and a drug-addicted outcast, got off to a stormy start last summer when the legendary composer Stephen Sondheim wrote a letter to The New York Times that harshly criticized the “Porgy’’ creative team’s description of their plans to overhaul the Gershwin opera. (The most far-reaching changes that had been considered were not in the final version of the show.) On Sunday night, “Porgy and Bess’’ defeated a revival of Sondheim’s “Follies.’’ But the big story of the evening was the success of “Once,’’ which was developed in a workshop at the ART last spring. Steve Kazee, who plays an Irish street busker who falls in love with a Czech pianist, won for best actor in a musical. “Once’’ also notched victories for best book of a musical, by Enda Walsh; best sound design of a musical, by Clive Goodwin of Arlington, the resident sound designer at the ART; and in the categories of best orchestrations, best scenic design, and best lighting design. “Death of a Salesman’’ won for best revival of a play, and Mike Nichols won for best direction of a play. In a recessionary era, there was a fresh currency to Arthur Miller’s 1949 classic about a man whose desperate, lifelong pursuit of a misguided version of the American dream ends with him being cast aside by his employer. Accepting the Tony Award, his sixth, Nichols said that Miller’s drama “does the rarest thing a play can do: It gets truer as time goes by.’’

Rangers throw 3-hitter in 5-0 win over Giants

A near-perfect day for the Texas Rangers pitching staff ended the same way so many others have this season: in the training room. Alexi Ogando pitched three perfect innings before leaving with a strained groin after a bunt single, combining with three relievers on a three-hitter to lead Texas past the San Francisco Giants 5-0 on Sunday. The Rangers also shut out San Francisco for the first time this season in a 5-0 win Friday. ''Seemed like everything we tried to do,'' Texas manager Ron Washington said, ''worked for us.'' Well, almost everything. Robbie Ross (6-0) allowed only a double to pinch-hitter Aubrey Huff in the sixth while working four innings. Mike Adams gave up two hits in a scoreless eighth and Joe Nathan tossed a 1-2-3 ninth. The AL West-leading Rangers tagged Tim Lincecum (2-7) for all their runs and finished a 4-6 road trip. Even still, the Bay Area finale left its mark. Ogando, who made his first start of the season filling in for injured Derek Holland, could be the latest Texas starter headed for the disabled list. ''Right now it feels pretty bad,'' said Ogando, scheduled to have an MRI exam Monday back in Texas. ''I feel bad because of the situation we're in but that's something that happens in baseball.'' Josh Hamilton and Ian Kinsler each drove in two runs to chase Lincecum after 5 2-3 innings in the fifth straight loss for San Francisco's shaggy-haired ace. He allowed nine hits, struck out five and walked four. The two-time NL Cy Young Award winner has been erratic all season. Sunday was no different. Lincecum labored through a 30-pitch first inning - walking three straight with two outs - before striking out the side in the second on a rare warm, windless day at San Francisco's waterfront ballpark. In the third, Elvis Andrus tripled and scored on Adrian Beltre's two-out double to give Texas a 1-0 lead. Everything really unraveled for the Giants in the fourth. Three straight singles by the Rangers loaded the bases, the last coming on a bunt by Ogando that trickled between Lincecum and third baseman Pablo Sandoval. Ogando limped off the field after the play, leaving with a right groin strain after throwing 39 pitches. Kinsler hit a two-run double to left to put the Rangers ahead 3-0. Lincecum got Beltre to pop out to right with the bases loaded, but he never settled into a rhythm. Hamilton hit another two-run double in the sixth to extend Texas' lead to 5-0 and send Lincecum into another four days of misery. The lanky right-hander is winless in eight straight starts. Lincecum, who pitched the Game 5 World Series clincher for the Giants at Texas in 2010 and also helped beat the Rangers earlier in that Series, has a 6.00 ERA this season. ''I was just looking to come in and compete against a very good team, try to right what I've been doing wrong the last 10 starts,'' Lincecum said. ''I didn't do that. Executing my pitches is the biggest problem. I had a good second inning and I wanted to carry that over but nothing was smooth.'' This time, the stars on the mound belonged to the Rangers. Not until Huff's pinch-hit double off Ross with one out in the sixth did the Giants even get a hit. Gregor Blanco followed with a grounder to the pitcher, Huff was tagged out in a rundown heading for third and Beltre's throw nabbed Blanco leaning too far off first for a double play. Angel Pagan and Nate Schierholtz singled off Adams in the eighth. Then Kinsler snagged a grounder by Brandon Crawford at second and flipped it back-handed to Andrus out of his glove to start another dramatic double play.

Olsen twins get fashion's big prize

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen took home the biggest prize at the annual Council of Fashion Designers of America awards. The former child TV stars were selected Monday night as the country's top womenswear designers for their collection called The Row. "I'd like to thank you — you," Mary-Kate, wearing an all-black ensemble, said, turning to her purple-clad twin, as she accepted. Jessica Chastain, who wore a sparkly white dress by Prabal Gurung, announced the 25-year-olds as winners at Lincoln Center in front of an audience that drew not only from the fashion world but also from Hollywood. "Mad Men's" Jessica Pare gave Reed Krakoff his trophy as best designer of accessories, and "White Collar's" Matt Bomer gave menswear designer Billy Reid his. The previously announced style icon award went to Johnny Depp, but he was on the set of "The Lone Ranger" and didn't attend. He sent an email — and filmmaker friend John Waters — in his place. Standing in front of a collage of Depp's outfits over the years, Waters said, "This man can't look ugly no matter how hard he tries." Waters also accepted the international award on behalf of Tokyo-based Rei Kawakubo, who won honors as an international designer for her often creative, balloonlike silhouettes created for the label Comme des Garcons. Waters said he was a fan of her clothes — and she also was a personal friend. However, he joked, some people might describe her clothes as "disaster at the dry-cleaner," rattling off the slew of warnings often found on washing labels. Ceremony host Seth Meyers, who started the night in a suit by Band of Outsiders, took on many targets, from John Galliano to Marc Jacobs. After making fun of Jacobs' sheer lace "dress" worn over boxer shorts to last month's fashion gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the industry's other important red carpet event, Meyers proceeded to put on the get-up later in the show. Using what he called fashion terminology, Meyers described the outfit as "breezy." And, no matter, he joked, if all the designers and models in the auditorium didn't like his act. "Fashion people like hating things more than they do liking things." In presenting Tommy Hilfiger with his lifetime achievement award, Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour said the designer could be pretty funny, especially in his imitations of famous people such as Karl Lagerfeld, Donna Karan and even Mick Jagger. "As long as you're not imitating me, we're all good," the famously serious Wintour said. CFDA president Diane von Furstenberg gave a shoutout to all the designers who have been members of the organization, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. "I'm the mother of all American designers. I can't pick a favorite child." The CFDA also presents a series of awards sponsored by Swarovski to up-and-coming talent: Joseph Altuzarra won in the women's category, Phillip Lim in men's and Tabitha Simmons in accessories.

Timothy Bradley attends news conference in a wheelchair after beating Manny Pacquiao

Timothy Bradley injured both of his feet during his win over Manny Pacquiao Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden and was forced to attend the post-fight news conference in a wheelchair. He said he heard his left foot snap in the second round. In about the fifth, he injured his right. His right ankle was grotesquely swollen following the fight, which Bradley won by a highly controversial split decision. Bradley had to suck it up and he won most of the last six rounds to take the victory. Judges C.J. Ross and Duane Ford had it 115-113 for Bradley. Jerry Roth had it 115-113 for Pacquiao. Timothy Bradley shows his right foot injury (Chris Farina/Top Rank)"I went back to the corner after the second and I said, 'Coach, I think I broke my ankle,' " Bradley said. His trainer, Joel Diaz, quickly responded. "You have two options," Diaz said he told Bradley. "I said, 'Either I'll stop the fight now or you'll suck it up and fight like a warrior.' " Diaz said Bradley once fought with a broken rib in a fight against Miguel Vazquez. "I wasn't quitting," Bradley said. "This was Manny Pacquiao." Bradley was taken to a local hospital for x-rays. There was no word on his condition.

AIEEE topper aims for Indian Idol title

Suraj Sanjay Jog, who bagged all India ranking (AIR) 24 in the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) has one more target to hit - the Indian Idol title. Jog said he has cleared five rounds of Indian Idol of the current season. "Definitely, I want to win Indian Idol title. I have cleared five rounds. My first audition was held in Jaipur and also I went to Mumbai for audition." He said he has not performed yet in front of the three judges - Anu Malik, Salim Merchant and Sunidhi Chauhan. "For that I think you have to be pathetically bad or extremely good," he said. Jog has not only bagged AIR 24 in AIEEE but also in IIT JEE with the same AIR 24. "I want to go for IIT. I will opt for electrical in IIT Bombay," he said. He claimed that he has taken singing lessons from playback singer Suresh Wadkar for a month. "Now, I am planning to devote time to singing as I will join Suresh Wadkar academy," said Jog, who is an NRI and lives in Dubai. He came to Kota and joined the Allen institute and devoted two years while preparing for various entrance exams. "When I find difficulty in studies, I always listen to the song 'Madhuban Main Radhika Nache Re', it's a soothing song," said Jog, who has his roots in Bangalore.

    Timothy Bradley wins split decision

Timothy Bradley promised to shock, though the biggest shock in his fight with Manny Pacquiao came from the judges' scorecards. [+] EnlargeTimothy Bradley Jeff Bottari/Getty Images"I didn't think he was as good as everyone says he was. I didn't feel his power," Timothy Bradley said after beating Manny Pacquiao. In a fight Pacquiao seemed to have in hand, two judges decided otherwise, giving Bradley a split decision Saturday night and ending the Filipino fighter's remarkable seven-year unbeaten run. Promoter Bob Arum fumed, the crowd at the MGM Grand arena booed, and Pacquiao seemed stunned when the decision was announced. Arum said there would be a November rematch, though he blasted the way the decision went down. "I've never been as ashamed of the sport of boxing as I am tonight," said Arum, who handles both fighters. Bradley came on strong in the later rounds, winning five of the last six on two scorecards and four on the third. He won 115-113 on the scorecards of judges Duane Ford and C.J. Ross, while losing on Jerry Roth's scorecard by the same margin. The Associated Press had Pacquiao winning 117-111. "I did my best," Pacquiao said. "I guess my best wasn't good enough." Pacquiao tried to turn the fight into a brawl, using his power to hurt Bradley in the early rounds. But Bradley changed tactics in the middle rounds and used his boxing skills to win enough rounds to take the narrow decision for the welterweight title. It ended a 15-fight winning streak by Pacquiao dating to 2005 that turned him into a boxing superstar and made him a national hero in the Philippines. "I thought I won the fight," Bradley said. "I didn't think he was as good as everyone says he was. I didn't feel his power." Ringside punching statistics showed Pacquiao landing 253 punches to 159 for Bradley, who vowed before the fight to take the 147-pound title from Pacquiao. The Compubox statistics showed Pacquiao landing more punches in 10 of the 12 rounds. Bradley was so confident that he had oversized tickets printed up for a Nov. 10 rematch that now will likely happen. Bradley seemed hurt in the fourth and fifth rounds, but Pacquiao had trouble landing big punches after that. Still, he seemed in control of the fight everywhere but on the judge's scorecards. "Can you believe that? Unbelievable," Arum said. "I went over to Bradley before the decision and he said, `I tried hard but I couldn't beat the guy.' " Bradley said he hurt his ankle in the second round, and that trainer Joel Diaz said he could either quit or try to take the fight to Pacquiao.

Police: Musician Bob Welch kills self

Bob Welch, a guitarist who played with Fleetwood Mac before launching a solo career, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his chest, Nashville, Tennessee, police said Thursday. He was 66.
Welch's wife found his body in their Nashville home about 12:15 p.m., Nashville Police spokesman Don Aaron said.
"All indications are that it was a suicide," Aaron said. A suicide note was found, he said.
Welch played guitar with Fleetwood Mac starting in 1971. He left the group in late 1974, just before Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks joined the group.
Nicks said in a statement that Welch's death was "devastating."
"I had many great times with him after Lindsey and I joined Fleetwood Mac," singer Nicks said. "He was an amazing guitar player -- he was funny, sweet -- and he was smart.
"I am so very sorry for his family and for the family of Fleetwood Mac -- so,so sad," Nicks said.
Welch's biggest hits, "Sentimental Lady" and "Ebony Eyes" came from his debut solo album "French Kiss," released in November 1977.

Kansas Family Of 6 Killed In Plane Crash In Polk County, Florida Swamp

A Kansas businessman, his wife and their four children were killed Thursday when their small plane crashed into a swampy area of central Florida, and word quickly spread to their hometown where the family was known for their charitable work and always having a house full of neighborhood kids.
The single-turboprop, fixed-wing plane was heading home to Junction City from the Bahamas when it broke apart and went down about 12:30 p.m. in the Tiger Creek Preserve, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office in Florida.
Deputies reached the area by helicopters, but it was clear there were no survivors, the sheriff's office said. The cause of the crash wasn't immediately known, and parts of the plane were found nearly 3 1/2 miles away, investigators said.
Ron Bramlage, a prominent businessman in Junction City who owned Roadside Ventures LLC, was piloting the 2006 Pilatus Pc-12/47. The 45-year-old, his wife, Rebecca, 43, and the couple's children – Brandon, 15; Boston, 13; Beau, 11; and 8-year-old Roxanne – were killed.
"It's just a horrific loss," Junction City Mayor Pat Landes said, adding that the couple supported many local projects and provided college scholarships. The family was well known in town and at Kansas State University, where the basketball arena is named for Ron Bramlage's grandfather.
At least two dozen bouquets of flowers lined the black wrought-iron fence surrounding the family's ranch-style home by Thursday evening. A trampoline sat in the front lawn, and a hammock hung between two large trees in the wooded yard.
Standing in his front yard across the street, Rick Bazan said he'd been friends with Ron Bramlage since childhood. He said his friend would often help local families financially, such as paying for kids to go to wrestling camps if their parents couldn't afford to send them.
He said Rebecca, who was president of the local school board, "never stopped working. She was tireless." She would be embarrassed by the outpouring of support now at her home, where at least a half-dozen friends of the couple's children were always running around, Bazan said.
"It's going to be a long time getting over this one," he said as he watched the family's neighbors and friends gather outside.
Bella Omann, 14, who went to middle school with the two younger boys, said Beau "was really the funniest kid I've ever met." She had an advanced geometry class with Boston, whom she said "loved reading books. We would always talk about our favorite books," including the Harry Potter novels. He read so much, she said, that their teacher wouldn't allow extra material on students' desks to keep him from reading.

Kris Humphries' New Girlfriend Takes On the Kardashians

All right, y'all, I am totally digging Kris Humphries' new girlfriend, Myla Sinanaj. She looks like a downmarket Kim Kardashian, and she Tweets like a chick with serious 'tude. Well, she IS a New Yawkah. Kris' reps deny she is his gf, but whatev, whatev. Why else would the girl Kris has been photographed with be burning up a storm on Twitter insulting the Kardashians? Eh? Check it out. This girl needs her own reality show. First, Myla took on the Kardashian/Jenner patriarch, Tweeting: Bruce Jenner's face scares me -- it should be on the 'Why not to get plastic surgery' poster. I mean, did she really write that? I'm pretty astonished. Not because of the diss, which is kind of funny, but because everything is spelled correctly. There's no way to check against her original Tweet, however, because a few hours ago her account went private. Boo! Myla, come back. Anyway, she also Tweeted about Kanye, who insulted Kris Humphries in his song "Theraflu": He should be bigger than taking petty shots at sh*t that got nothing to do with him. Lost respect. And then, the capper. After Kim Kardashian Tweeted some new pics of herself, Myla wrote: Looks like J. Lo. Ohhh, burn!!! Wait, was that a burn? A compliment? Could go either way. J.Lo is beautiful, but no celebrity wants to be thought of as emulating another celebrity. Was Myla implying that Kim is a poor carbon copy of J.Lo.? Was she saying that Kim is unoriginal? Or was she being nice to Kim? Ohhhh, I have a headache.

Ex-Titans CB Wade Davis comes out

A cornerback who spent four preseasons with three NFL teams and also played in NFL Europe has come out as gay, joining a small but growing number of former athletes who are publicly acknowledging they are gays or lesbians. Wade Davis, who played in college at Weber State and spent the 2000 and 2002 preseasons with the Tennessee Titans, said he didn't tell his teammates he was gay because he feared the impact it would have in the locker room. Jevon Kearse and Samari Rolle were among his closest friends on the Titans, and he would later be invited to Rolle's wedding. "You just want to be one of the guys, and you don't want to lose that sense of family," Davis said in an interview with Outsports.com. "Your biggest fear is that you'll lose that camaraderie and family." But Kearse said he doesn't think Davis being openly gay would have changed anything. "I know there have been a lot more than just Wade," Kearse told Outsports. "It's just becoming more acceptable, which is a good thing so they can come out and not feel secluded." While there has yet to be an openly gay player in any of the four major American professional leagues, several players have come out after retiring, including former NBA forward John Amaechi, NFL lineman Esera Tuaolo and major leaguer Billy Bean. Rick Welts, president and chief operating officer of the Golden State Warriors, is openly gay. Davis' football career ended in 2003, after he got hurt in training camp. He is now a staff member at the Hetrick-Martin Institute in New York, which serves, gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth.

Nasty Great Pacific Garbage Patch Coming to a Beach Near You!

Headed to the beach this summer? Don't forget to pack the sunscreen, the inner tubes, the paddle ball, and an effing trash bag the size of your house because the sad news, folks, is that you're going to need it. Parts of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch are heading for the vulnerable shores on the west coast and there's nothing that can be done to stop it. Experts predict that the coastline of Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and Hawaii will see some pretty nasty debris wash ashore; California will have some, but less, as most of it will be caught in a current that will carry it to the pacific islands. How do you say "look out, there's a giant goddamn wad of plastic refuse floating behind you" in Tahitian? There is some good news, though. Scientists say that they don't expect any bodies to land on the beach -- any human parts that were part of the Garbage Patch will have disintegrated before reaching land. How reassuring. We all know that the Great Garbage Patch has been around for a while, so why, exactly, is some of it washing ashore this summer? Apparently, it has to do with the Japanese tsunami last year. The debris from that disaster is just now making its way across the Pacific and researchers say that it will continue to beach itself until 2014. That's three whole summers of potentially very, very dirty shorelines. Officials are telling people, "If you don't know what it is, don't touch it." Solid advice. Obviously there's no one to blame for the tsunami debris -- it was a tragedy last year and its unwelcome effects are still being felt today. But if you see some trash on the beach this summer, regardless if you're in South Carolina or Hawaii, do everyone a favor and pick it up. Well, that is, if you recognize it. Otherwise, call the cops.

With Apple breakup looming, Google shows off some 'magic'

In the wake of reports that Apple plans to drop Google's Maps software by year-end in favor of a home grown solution, Google announced a slew of updates to its popular mapping software Wednesday. "We're trying to create magic here," the company said during a special event held in San Francisco, part of a "never ending quest for the perfect map." At the event, at which Google promised "the next dimension of Google maps," the search giant unveiled a revamped Google Earth mobile app, which now sports 3D models for entire cities, among other updates such as a new Street View Trekker -- a backpack-based system to allow the company to map on foot locations such as the Grand Canyon. In a few weeks, Android users will also have an ?offline? mode for Google Maps. Among the magical new features: an expanded Map Maker tool to allow residents of Finland, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein and more to report mapping errors. Will these changes be enough to keep Apple spellbound? Not everyone was convinced. "The message here is: There?s lots of effort, technical expertise and money behind Google?s mapping efforts ? this can?t be easily duplicated," wrote Greg Sterling on the SearchEngineLand website. "The company is trying to educate journalists who?ll probably be writing about Apple Maps next week." For Google, showing off the company's technical expertise in the field is key should Apple officially announce a decision to build a Maps replacement, banishing Google's service from the iPhone platform by the end of the year, as a recent report from the Wall Street Journal indicated. Since the launch of the iPhone in 2007, Google Maps has served as the default map app and is now used by more than 90 percent of U.S. iPhone users. The breakup could turn out to be an expensive one for Google as the ongoing war for mobile supremacy continues. By some estimates, ads associated with maps or locations accounted for 25 percent of all spending on mobile ads. "Apple is aiming squarely at Google on multiple dimensions," Rajeev Chand, a managing director at investment bank Rutberg & Co., told the WSJ citing mapping and Web search. "Google and Apple are in a battle over data, devices, services, and the future of computing. This is the historic battle of today." Beyond potential revenue streams, developing an in-house platform gives Apple more control over its product and ultimate user experience. With Apple expected to demonstrate its new software next week during its annual WWDC developer?s conference on June 11, this may have been Google?s last chance to make a statement.

House Adopts Measure to Halt Light-Bulb Efficiency Law

Republicans in the U.S. House adopted a provision designed to save traditional incandescent light bulbs by blocking what one lawmaker called the "energy police" from enforcing an efficiency standard. Even if the House language approved last night survives in the Democratic-led Senate, the impact for consumers probably will be limited because manufacturers such as Royal Philips Electronics NV (PHIA) and General Electric Co. (GE) have revamped manufacturing to comply with the law, making bulbs that use less electricity to generate the same amount of light. The first phase of the federal efficiency standard, which was passed in 2007 during President George W. Bush's administration, went into effect this year. It has become a symbol of government excess to Tea Party-aligned lawmakers, who say consumers should be able to buy the bulbs they want. "People are sick of the government treading where it just doesn't belong," said Representative Michael Burgess, a Texas Republican who sponsored the light-bulb amendment, which was added to a broader energy-spending bill. Burgess' provision was adopted last night by voice vote. A similar provision was in the spending bill covering the fiscal year that ends Sept. 30, which was passed in the House in December. "The law couldn't be enforced," Burgess said of his amendment in an interview. "‘We don't need no stinkin' badges. We're the energy police.'" A vote on the overarching bill was expected as soon as today. Democrats, environmental groups and lighting manufacturers such as Fairfield, Connecticut-based GE support the efficiency law. ‘Politicizing Bulbs' Blocking the Energy Department from enforcement might let unscrupulous foreign manufacturers push non-compliant products, including to bulk buyers such as builders. Those sales are difficult to track. "Some in Congress are willing to put U.S. jobs at risk for political positioning," said Joseph Higbee, a spokesman for the National Electrical Manufacturers Association, a Rosslyn, Virginia-based group. "This is an example of a few politicizing light bulbs at the risk of American workers and the economy." Companies have retooled plants to make compact fluorescent lights, light-emitting diodes and a halogen version of the pear- shaped incandescent product that meets the efficiency standard. Some of the more efficient bulbs are made in the U.S. Burgess said consumers should be able to choose for themselves which bulbs they want to buy. "I'm smart enough to make my own decisions about the purchase of energy, and the government should not feel the need to do that for me," he said. $32.1 Billion The underlying bill would spend $32.1 billion on energy and water-development programs, about $965 million less than what President Barack Obama requested, according to the House Appropriations Committee. It would put more money into fossil- fuel programs than Obama's budget. The president's advisers said May 31 they would recommend the president veto the bill because of cuts to efficiency and clean-energy programs, including to the Advanced Research Projects Agency - Energy that funds innovative technologies, and language intended to keep Yucca Mountain in Nevada viable as a repository for the nation's nuclear waste.

Early photos of 'tan mom' reveal dramatic difference

Apparently all those dermatologists were right: in addition to bumping up your risk of skin cancer, tanning does make you look really old. Early glamour shots of Patricia Krentcil reportedly showing the so-called "tan mom" with nary a wrinkle have created a buzz this week, including drawing the attention of TODAY's Hoda and Kathie Lee Gifford. A representative from Splash Media, which has rights to the images, says they were taken when Krentcil was in her twenties. Juxtaposed against the 44-year-old's current pictures, it's easy to see why dermatologists have been trash-talking tanning salons all these years. Granted, we all age over the course of two decades, but it's hard to even recognize the features of the younger New Jersey woman within Krentcil's current lined and leathery face. The mother of five was charged with second-degree child endangerment for allegedly trying to introduce her 5-year-old red-haired daughter to the wonders of tanning salons. While Krentcil vehemently denies the charges (she says the young girl got sunburned while playing in a kiddie pool), she readily admits she loves to tan, something she does up to 20 times a month, according to reports. "I'm sorry I'm tan, I like to be tan, it just feels good," she said in an exclusive interview with TODAY. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, more than a million people in the U.S. use tanning beds every day, nearly 70 percent of them young girls and women aged 16 to 29 years old. In addition to being labeled a known carcinogen by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the World Health Organization, indoor tanning beds increase the risk of melanoma by 75 percent. Studies have also shown that the UV radiation in tanning beds damages the DNA in skin cells with excessive exposure causing premature skin aging, immune suppression and eye damage, including cataracts and ocular melanoma. Indoor tanning can also be addictive, the organization warns.

MSNBC host who argued fallen soldiers aren’t heroes is a woman

Ann Coulter took to Twitter to condemn an MSNBC host who said over Memorial Day weekend that he’s “uncomfortable” calling American soldiers who died in battle heroes. And in doing so, the conservative commentator jokingly called the male host — Chris Hayes — a woman. “Chris Hayes ‘Uncomfortable’ Calling Fallen Military ‘Heroes’ – Marines respond by protecting his right to menstruate,” Coulter posted on her Twitter account Sunday night. Hayes — a liberal writer who hosts the weekend show “Up with Chris Hayes” — argued that he’s “uncomfortable about the word because it seems to me that it is so rhetorically proximate to justifications for more war.” “I don’t want to obviously desecrate or disrespect memory of anyone that’s fallen — and obviously there are individual circumstances in which there is genuine, tremendous heroism: hail of gunfire, rescuing fellow soldiers and things like that — but it seems to me that we marshal this word in a way that is problematic,” he said.

Hundreds of words to avoid using online if you don't want the government spying on you

The Department of Homeland Security has been forced to release a list of keywords and phrases it uses to monitor social networking sites and online media for signs of terrorist or other threats against the U.S. The intriguing the list includes obvious choices such as 'attack', 'Al Qaeda', 'terrorism' and 'dirty bomb' alongside dozens of seemingly innocent words like 'pork', 'cloud', 'team' and 'Mexico'. Released under a freedom of information request, the information sheds new light on how government analysts are instructed to patrol the internet searching for domestic and external threats. The words are included in the department's 2011 'Analyst's Desktop Binder' used by workers at their National Operations Center which instructs workers to identify 'media reports that reflect adversely on DHS and response activities'. Department chiefs were forced to release the manual following a House hearing over documents obtained through a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit which revealed how analysts monitor social networks and media organisations for comments that 'reflect adversely' on the government. However they insisted the practice was aimed not at policing the internet for disparaging remarks about the government and signs of general dissent, but to provide awareness of any potential threats. As well as terrorism, analysts are instructed to search for evidence of unfolding natural disasters, public health threats and serious crimes such as mall/school shootings, major drug busts, illegal immigrant busts. The list has been posted online by the Electronic Privacy Information Center - a privacy watchdog group who filed a request under the Freedom of Information Act before suing to obtain the release of the documents. In a letter to the House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Counter-terrorism and Intelligence, the centre described the choice of words as 'broad, vague and ambiguous'.

Government spends billions on obesity studies

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) spent $830 million funding obesity studies in fiscal year 2011. Between 2008 and 2011, NIH spent over $3.3 billion on obesity research. Spending on obesity research also overshadows many other areas of research funded by NIH, including research on Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease and breast cancer, which received $448 million, $437 million and $715 million in 2011, respectively. “Obesity is a very is a very significant cause of current illness in our country and becoming more significant all the time,” said Dr. Francis Collins, NIH director. Because of the rise in obesity, NIH established the Obesity Research Task Force in 2003 and came out with its first Strategic Plan for NIH Obesity Research in 2004. The plan aims “to serve as a guide to accelerate research that will lessen the personal and public health burdens of obesity” with the help of input of external experts, industry professionals, and health-focused organizations through a public comment period. It also “encompasses all levels of research, from basic biological and behavioral research through community and population research.” “The strategic plan is rather sweeping in its set of goals, going all the way from basic science understanding of what are those signals that actually trigger hunger and satiety,” Collins said. “It focuses quite heavily then on interventions. How do you design trials with creative new ideas about how to prevent or treat obesity, and then once you’ve identified possible strategies, how do you develop an approach to find out if they work in the real world.”

    Teen solves Newton’s 300-year-old riddle

An Indian-born teenager has won a research award for solving a mathematical problem first posed by Sir Isaac Newton more than 300 years ago that has baffled mathematicians ever since. The solution devised by Shouryya Ray, 16, makes it possible to calculate exactly the path of a projectile under gravity and subject to air resistance. Shouryya, who lives in Dresden, eastern Germany, came up with the solutions to this and a second mathematical riddle while working on a school project. He is being hailed as a genius in the German press, but attributes his achievement to “curiosity and schoolboy naivety.” “When it was explained to us that the problems had no solutions, I thought to myself: well, there’s no harm in trying,” he said. The problems he resolved are from the field of dynamics. The first, dealing with the movement of projectiles through the air, was posed by Newton in the 17th century. The second, which relates to the collision of a body with a wall, was posed in the 19th century. Only partial solutions had been discovered up to now, requiring simplified assumptions or calculations by computer. Shouryya’s elegant solutions could contribute to greater precision in fields such as ballistics. Shouryya’s family moved to Germany when he was 12 after his father Subhashis Ray, an engineer, got a job at a technical college. Shouryya spoke no German when he arrived but has mastered the language and is due to take the German equivalent of A-levels this week, two years ahead of his peers. “Ray’s accomplishment is impressive and we are particularly proud of his background as it highlights the achievements of migrants across language and cultural barriers,” said the Youth Research Foundation, which gave him the award. A keen cricketer, Shouryya cites his father as his inspiration and says he instilled a “hunger for mathematics” after teaching him calculus at the age of six.

    Mindfulness for Authentic Relationships

"God has given you one face and you make yourselves another. You jig and amble, and you lisp, you nickname God's creatures and make your wantonness your ignorance." -- Hamlet, Act III, scene 1 As sentient beings we yearn to be loved unconditionally, and we were raised in a highly competitive society that taught us tools to gain love conditionally -- mostly through doing and accomplishing certain tasks, achieving certain goals, and/or appearing and speaking in particular ways. Ever since we were infants we received positive reinforcement -- smiles and "yes!'s" -- when we behaved or appeared in ways that pleased our caretakers, and we received negative reinforcement -- frowns and "no!'s" -- when we behaved or appeared in "uncivilized" ways that displeased our caretakers. Carl Jung spoke of the personas that we create in order to interact with others. More pejoratively, D.W. Winnicott theorized that we developed "false selves" in order to help survive our childhoods as we acclimated to the demands of our society. I think we can agree that we have facades that we use to interact with most people, and then we have our somewhat unglamorous and often unseemly real or authentic selves that we only show a few close friends and family members. But what if the tools we developed as children that are now part of our personas/facades don't actually help us get our emotional needs met? What if those tools actually inhibit authentic relationships, connections and interactions? Maybe we acquired tools such as fear, suspicion and doubt, which protected us in our youth but now cause us to hack into our lovers' email accounts to see if they are remaining faithful? Maybe we procured the tool of seduction and know how to attract people's attention and provide them with moments of titillation and glee, but remain unsure if they love us? Maybe we discovered the tool of playing the victim, of drawing people into our dramas and forcing them to take care of us? Maybe we cultivated the tool of providing material comforts for others but end up resenting them for being gold-diggers? Maybe we learned how to fill our lives up with busy-ness in order to seem important but are now perceived as frenetic, disorganized and distant by others? Maybe we were taught to smile and look happy on the outside even when we feel alienated, misunderstood and disconnected on the inside? Maybe we learned passive-aggressive language to avoid being vulnerable?

Pregnancy: My Friend Was Having A Baby. Why Couldn't I Be Happier For Her?

When I was 26 years old, two of my best friends became pregnant within a month of each other. Upon word of their news, I promptly burst into tears -- and was surprised to find that they weren't the happy kind. Instead of feeling excited for my friends, I somehow felt devastated by their pregnancies. The emotions that rose up for me were a complicated mixture of jealousy, abandonment and insecurity. It wasn't just that I hadn't forseen this era of my life beginning yet, but rather the intense reaction I had was more to do with all the things about my own life that my friends' pregnancies illuminated. In the shadow of their seemingly glorious news, my life suddenly looked like a mess. I had a boyfriend I was ambivalent about, a flailing career as a fledgling writer, a habit of drinking too much, and I had just lost my second parent. Suddenly the stark contrast between my life and that of my two friends' was too blinding. In the beginning, I hid my feelings, feigning both busyness and excitement in an effort to conceal my darker emotions and avoid seeing my friends. But it wasn't long before I couldn't bring myself to be in their company at all. I felt like the worst person in the history of the world. What kind of woman hates her best friend for getting pregnant? But I did. I was angry. I felt left behind, betrayed, and abandoned. On top of that I felt like an utter brat for feeling all of the above. No matter how irrational, part of me felt hurt that they hadn't waited for me to be ready to also make this major life transition. Another part of me thought they were making a huge mistake getting pregnant so young. The rest of me mainly felt jealous. As I struggled poorly to contain these feelings, my relationships with both of them began to crumble. I knew I was being hurtful by not being able to get past my own issues. I also knew that my friends were both going through one of the biggest life transitions any of us had made yet. It was obvious that they felt unsure and scared of the journey they were embarking on, and that they probably could have used my support more than ever. Still, I stewed in my messy feelings. I pulled it together enough to make it through the baby showers and I even made it to the hospital on the day one of their babies was born, but if I'm going to be honest here, I have to say that I never quite made it past my hurt and resentment long enough to be a good friend during that time. I wish I could say that once the babies arrived I turned a corner, but I didn't. As my friends moved into this new phase of their lives, I stayed in mine, fairly oblivious to what they were going through as mothers to newborns. For a long time our friendships cooled on the counter like almost-burned pies. Somewhere in that time we all ended up in different cities, the distance easing the pressure to stay close, and it wasn't until almost four years had passed and I found myself married and pregnant myself that things began to turn around. I'll never forget those trying, early months with my daughter, what it was like to be alone in the house with her after my husband had gone to work, feeling exhausted and overwhelmed, and filled with remorse for how little support I'd given my friends when they'd been in this same place. Over the phone, miles apart, I couldn't stop apologizing to the friend I'd always been closest to. She was warm and accepting and sent me baby presents and helpful advice on a regular basis, and I couldn't have been more thankful -- or humbled. All of these experiences helped me when I became the target of another friend's resentment. When we were both pregnant with our first children, she miscarried and stopped speaking to me. Her hurt and anger is too familiar for me to feel resentful of her silence. She's since had a baby but still hasn't spoken to me. That stings, but it's also something that I understand on a deeper level than I wish to.

America decaffeinated: The great Starbucks outage of 2012

Bleary-eyed customers who stumble into their local Starbucks every morning did so literally Wednesday. That's because hundreds of the coffee chain's stores were closed. The forced decaffeination of America's morning commuters was due to overnight maintenance work at stores across the country that wasn't finished on time for the morning rush, Maggie Jantzen, a spokeswoman for Starbucks, told NBC station WCMH of Columbus, Ohio. Jantzen said she didn't know how many stores were affected, but she said about 10 percent to 20 percent of the stores that were due for the work were unable to open on time. The company said the work was routine maintenance on a standardized water filtration system and that no safety issues were involved. But because of it, stores were closed across the country — as many as 1,500, mainly in the eastern half of the U.S., a quick tabulation of local news reports and hundreds of tweets by msnbc.com indicated. (A spokesman for Starbucks told msnbc.com on Thursday that the number of stores was in the "low to mid hundreds.") Coffee drinkers were left dripless from South Dakota to Florida, New York to Texas. "I like to start my day with Starbucks, so I don't really know what to do," Kelly Furnet told NBC station WJXT as she stood outside a shuttered shop in Jacksonville, Fla. "It's a huge problem because, in my office, people go there multiple times in a day for their coffee fix," Rebecca Stockdale, who works near one of the closed Starbucks in Columbus, told WCMH. "You can't have them coming to work without their caffeine!"

    How to Romance a Man

I know, you’re thinking that to romance a man you just need to show up naked, but I think you might be wrong. So often we hear that the man should be the romantic one, and maybe 50 years ago this would have been so but this is 2008, and men like to be spoiled too. Think back to when you first met. The first dates, wining an dining, making an effort to look your best, breakfast in bed, long weekends having frantic sex. Dont you wish it was the same? Well I bet your partner also does. Instead of waiting for him to make the first move (after all we know how slow men are in the romantic take-up department. No offense guys) you take the lead and add a bit of romance into your relationship. Show off your romantic side. 1. Pick up the phone: Give him a ring while he is at the office just to let him know that you are thinking of him. Or if you are confident with phone sex tell him what you are going to do to him once he gets home and in turn what you would like him to do to you. 2. Fill the stocking: Men love sexy lingerie just as much as women if not more. Let him know how much you want him by getting out your best panties, team them with a pair of fishnets, stilettos and seduce him tonight. 3. Feed his heart: You know the old saying the way to a mans heart is through his stomach! Well you better believe it because it works every time. Get out the best dinner set set the table with candles, put on some soft music and prepare his favorite meal. You wont even need to think of dessert because this is where he will become romantic and wisk you of to the bedroom. 4. Flirt: When was the last time you actually flirted with your partner? Go out in public (to dinner, to a party or nightclub) and try it. It will boost both your egos bring back those old feelings of lust for one an other. Think like a single person and see what happens 5. Bedroom boudoir: Set the mood in your bedroom. Clear out all the clutter, change the bed linen (bring in some silk sheets perhaps) and fill the room with scented candles. Stand a bottle of your favorite bubbly in some ice, lay your sexiest lingerie on the bed and keep a box of his favorite chocolates near by. This is also an inexpensive way to give your bedroom a new look. 6. Use toys: If you want to add some spice to your love making then what better way then to introduce some props. We are not talking about 12? dildos (unless you want to that is) it can be something as small as a silk scarf or as daring as vibrators. Your man will need never be asked to make an effort again. 7. Watch a flick: Rent a romantic movie, order a take away, get out a bottle of your favorite wine, take the phone of the hook turn out the lights and snuggle into each other on the sofa in front of the TV. The romantic flick will soon have the two of you in the mood for love. 8. Love letters: Leave him little notes in his pocket, on his pillow, next to his mother any where that he will find them that will give him a nice surprise. 9. Kiss.. him all of his body slowly 10. 3 little words: Tell him that you love him at least once a day. This will keep the love there even if you havent always got time to express it, those 3 little words is all that you need.source

Naked man killed by Police near MacArthur Causeway was ‘eating’ face off victim

One man was shot to death by Miami police, and another man is fighting for his life after he was attacked and his face allegedly half eaten, by a naked man on the MacArthur Causeway off ramp, police said. The bloodshed began about 2 p.m. when a series of gunshots were heard on the ramp, which is along NE 13th Street, just south of The Miami Herald building. Witnesses said a woman saw the two men fighting and flagged down a police officer who was in the area. The officer, who has not been identified, approached and saw that the naked man was actually chewing the other man’s head, according to witnesses. The officer ordered the naked man to back away, and when he continued the assault, the officer shot him. The attacker continued to eat the man, despite being shot, forcing the officer to continue firing. Witnesses said they heard at least a half dozen shots. Miami police were on the scene, which was just south of The Miami Herald building on Biscayne Boulevard. The naked man who was killed lay face down on the pedestrian walkway just below the newspaper’s two-story parking garage. Police requested The Herald’s video surveillance tapes. The other man was transported to the hospital with critical injuries, according to police. Their identities were not released. The incident, which came as crowds descended upon South Beach for the annual Urban Beach Week hip-hop festival, snarled traffic on the causeway for several hours. In a text message, Javier Ortiz, spokesman for Miami police’s Fraternal Order of Police, said the officer who fired the fatal shots was “a hero.” “Based on the information provided, our Miami police officer is a hero and saved a life,’’ he said. Sergeant Altarr Williams, supervisor of Miami police’s Homicide Unit, said a man doesn’t have to be armed to be dangerous.

    Sonakshi Sinha conquers Google trends

The Dabangg girl's name was the most searched keyword on Google India on Sunday. Sonakshi's most wanted status on Google may be attributed to her sensational peek-a-boo black number, which she wore for filmmaker Karan Johar's 40th birthday bash. In fact just recently, Sonakshi's forehead was among the top 10 trends on Twitter. Some of the tweets were rather rude implying that the actor's forehead might just be too large. @GabbbarSingh: DLF and Unitech in a court battle over the real estate on Sonakshi Sinha's forehead. @karinasood: Rajya Sabha adjourned due to a foul smell? Why can't they just hold the session on 'The Upper House', On Sonakshi Sinha's Forehead @indiantweeter: Sonakshi Sinha's forehead declared World heritage site by UNESCO The actor, who donned an Indian look in her debut film Dabangg had said that she is not comfortable wearing a bikini on screen. "It's a complete no-no to bikini because I am not that kind of a person. I have been bought up in a certain way. I have certain restrictions that I follow and I don't see any reason to change it because if the audience has accepted me fully clothed, then why would I resort to it?" said Sonakshi recently. Sonakshi's upcoming film Rowdy Rathore opposite Akshay Kumar will hit the big screen on June 1.

70% women use contraceptives during first sexual encounter

The results of the study reveal that the prevalence of contraceptive use during the first sexual encounter is 70.4 percent. It varies in the different regions from 55.8 percent in Murcia to 76.7 percent in the Basque Country.

ontraceptive use in Spain during the first sexual encounter is similar to other European countries, a new study has revealed. Spanish researchers have analysed the prevalence of contraceptive use during the first sexual encounter over the last month in 5,141 sexually active women between

the ages of 15 and 49 years through Spain's 17 autonomous communities.
“Bearing in mind the individual factors amongst women that determine contraceptive use, living in one autonomous community or another also has an influence,” Dolores Ruiz Munoz, researcher at the Public Health Agency of Barcelona and lead author of the study, said.
In this case, contraceptive use shows positive correlation in women with a university education and negative correlation amongst women from poor backgrounds.
Ruiz Munoz points out that “contraceptive use during the first sexual encounter was more common amongst non-religious women in developed countries who had high educational attainment and their first sexual experience was between the ages of 18 and 19 years.”
Furthermore, the prevalence of contraceptive use during the four weeks prior to the interview stood at 77.2 percent. Percentages varied from 70.9 percent in Navarra to 86.7 percent in Asturias, which suggested less difference between the different regions that in the case of the first sexual encounter.
CoupleThe use of contraceptives during sexual relations in the month before the study was more common amongst younger women, those who live alone, those with higher educational attainment, those with children and those that had used contraceptives during their first sexual encounter.
“There are many factors that influence the correlation between the region and women at an intermediate level. These factors which influence the context must be taken into account to ensure all women throughout Spain have equal access to contraceptives regardless of their socio-economic level or the area where they live,” Munoz said.
According to experts, contraceptives are the most effective way of preventing unplanned pregnancy and their use is widespread in Spain. Nonetheless, there are still some inequalities in their use.
In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of considering the social, economic and political characteristics of regions when designing administrative measures and promotion methods for contraceptive use.

Three children, age 3 and under, found abandoned in Portland

Three small children -- all apparently 3 years old or younger and with no parent in sight -- were found Thursday among a group of homeless people in Portland, Oregon, police said. The youngsters' identities are unknown. Portland police issued a statement saying its officers are working with the state Department of Human Services to learn more about the children, most importantly who they are. The investigation began with a 911 call, placed around 9:25 a.m. (12:25 p.m. ET) Thursday, about a man who'd heard children's voices apparently emanating from a shed behind his house in East Portland. Police officers arrived and found the "vacant residence" where the sounds had come from. There they talked to "a number of homeless people on the premises" and discovered the three "olive-skinned" children. The youngest among them is described by police as a 15-pound infant who is between the age of 8 and 15 months old. She has short black hair, brown eyes and two front, lower teeth showing. The next oldest child found is another girl. Weighing 28 pounds, she has long black hair and brown eyes and is about 2 years old, police estimate. The third child is a boy, approximately 3 years old. He also weighs 28 pounds and has brown eyes, as well as short black hair. Homeless people told police that a woman, believed to be the three's mother, had abandoned the children there the night before. Authorities are pleading for the public's help to identity the children, who are currently in protective custody and being medically evaluated. Anyone who has information about the identity of the children, or the circumstances under which they came to be at the vacant residence in Southeast Portland, is asked to contact the DHS Child Abuse Hotline, 24/7, at 503-731-3100.

First Look: Michonne from "The Walking Dead"

Production on Season 3 of the hit show "The Walking Dead" is underway, and today we get our first look at new character Michonne! EW.com posted this pic of actress Danai Gurira as the katana-wielding zombie killer. Michonne was introduced at the very end of the Season 2 finale, where she saved Andrea (Laurie Holden) from being eaten by a zombie. At the time of filming, Danai had not been cast, so another actor stood in wearing a hood. In the graphic novel, Michonne joins Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and the other survivors after they set up shop in a prison -- which has been established as the backdrop for Season 3. Presumably in the show, Andrea will lead Michonne to the group, which differs from the comic. Check out the first look at Season 3, which Andrew describes as "darker, harder, faster, deeper."

    Bad-boy moves women love

Sorry to break this to you, single men, but it is possible to be too nice. And if you’re reading this article, you’ve probably fallen into the trap of following all the rules — you wined and dined her, asked her questions, called the next day — but still didn’t win her heart. What gives? “Women like a nice guy at first,” says Dr. Robert Glover, author of No More Mr. Nice Guy. But niceness can also be seen as weakness — and that’s a major turn-off for most women. So how do you show a date that you’re genuinely interested in her without going overboard? We asked Dr. Glover and single men and women for some pointers that should help even the meekest man make a stronger statement during dates. DO take charge “Dating is like a dance: If you don’t take the lead, she has to,” Dr. Glover says. “Most women don’t want to be in charge.” Asking her out is a big step, but it’s not enough. Dr. Glover suggests having a particular day and plan already picked out in advance: “Asking her to go out sometime leaves too many details to be determined. Instead, ask her to meet you for drinks on Tuesday.” That way, all she has to decide is whether or not she’s free that night. DO disagree with her “Nothing irritates me more than someone who agrees with everything I say, even when I can tell he has another opinion,” says Theresa M. from Washington, D.C. “If I wanted to hear my thoughts on a subject, I would just talk to myself. I want a guy who will challenge me.” By avoiding conflict with your date, you may as well be wearing a big sign that says, I’m a pushover! If you don’t see eye-to-eye with her, say so. DO tease her a little You won’t ever find a woman who doesn’t like a man who’s funny. So go ahead and let your sarcasm streak or dry sense of humor shine — just make sure to do it playfully. Sean, 35, from New York City, attests to the power of this move: “I used some playful teasing on my last date — I told her, ‘Your head isn’t nearly as large as it looks on your profile’ — and we were able to use all that built-in first-date tension to our advantage.” By carrying yourself this way, you’ll look confident — which, by the way, is a turn-on for everyone. DO talk about yourself Don’t ramble on about your own life constantly, but mentioning things here and there is a good way to make sure your date doesn’t feel like she’s interrogating you. Instead, ask her where she was born; then, when she’s done answering you, drop a few relevant details about your life. “Everything was always about me with this one guy I dated. It was so annoying,” says Alina from Chicago. “There’s no way I’m that interesting! I kept waiting for him to tell me something.” DON’T plan elaborate dates “The first two or three dates should be simple, casual coffee-type meetings. You should pay for them, but they should be cheap,” says Dr. Glover. Do the opposite, and you just look like you’re trying too hard, says Marissa from Johnson City, TN. “A guy bought concert tickets for a band I had mentioned in passing,” she explains. “He spent way too much money. It was shocking, and I felt like I owed him something afterward.” Clearly, these are not good feelings to build a relationship on. DON’T compliment your date too much “An ex-boyfriend gave me compliments all the time,” says Rachel from Harrisonburg, VA. “It got to the point that I didn’t believe him anymore, and I figured he said those things to every woman he dated.” Seeming insincere is bad, but it can get even worse: “She’ll like it at first, but persistent flattery will start to spook her in some way,” says Dr. Glover. Forget the usual flood of flattery, then, and show her you care by the occasional compliment from the heart — and by being reliable. READ MORE

Zuckerberg Wife Priscilla Chan's Ruby Ring May Be Valuable After All

Billionaire Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, 28, is getting a lot of flack for being cheap with his new bride. He married Priscilla Chan, 27, in a surprise ceremony in their backyard last Saturday and Chan wore an off-the-rack dress by Claire Pettibon. No fancy venue or Vera Wang gown for this bride! Experts consulted by the UK paper The Daily Mail are claiming Zuckerberg was too frugal and thoughtless because of the "very simple" ruby ring he gave Chan (the AP reported that he designed it himself). However, an expert consulted by Yahoo! Shine points out that rubies are extremely significant and popular in Asian culture, and can potentially be more expensive than diamonds. Celebrity rings and their knock-offs Thanks to Facebook going public, Zuckerberg is now worth over $20 billion (at least, he was before stock price started to fall), and though he's partial to wearing casual hoodies, he may still have bought his long-term girlfriend a nice ring. Chan was spotted showing off her new bling at lunch with a friend in Palo Alto, California on Wednesday, and while the jewelry designer and price of the ring remain undisclosed, a ruby expert told Yahoo! Shine exclusively that the ring could have cost over $100,000. "It's a small stone, but rubies can be extremely expensive," says Michael Arnstein, CEO of the Natural Sapphire Company. He estimates the size of Chan's ruby to be 2.75 to 3 carats. Rubies of that size cost from $20,000 for a low quality stone, to up to $100,000 for a higher quality one. "The value depends on the quality of the ruby, and it's hard to tell for sure from the photo," Arnstein says. "A Burmese ruby, which this definitely looks like, can cost upwards of $100,000." The two diamonds flanking the ruby look to be around 1 carat combined, and could tack an extra $5,000 on to the price tag. As for Zuckerberg's choice of a ruby, Arnstein is not surprised. "Red has more meaning and emotion in Asia," he says, and Zuckerberg's Chinese-American bride may have requested a ruby ring because it "identifies where she comes from culturally." Rubies are a symbol of wisdom--what better for the new medical school graduate? And, the jewelry expert points out that Zuckerberg and Chan are conservative, and the engagement ring isn't too flashy but rather something she'd feel comfortable wearing every day. Arnstein also says the setting appears to be yellow gold, which is also more traditional in Asian culture. "Zuckerberg loves her and would have bought her anything she wanted, but this is probably what her grandmother had."

'From Love To Bingo In 873 Images': Getty Images Ad Is Basically The Greatest Flipbook Ever Made

Hat tip to Reddit: this one minute ad for Getty Images is indeed, the best use of stock images we've ever seen. According to the description posted to YouTube by ad agency AlmapBBDO, copywriter Sophie Schoenburg and art director Marcus Kotlhar sifted through more than 5000 stock Getty images to end up with 873. The result, "From Love To Bingo In 873 Images," flashes 15 images per second, a pace fast enough to create the sensation of the story of a long marriage unfolding in a minute. Yes it's an ad (GettyImagesx873), but it seems like Schoenburg and Kotlhar had fun being perfectionists about it: [They] worked 6 months researching images, improving the script and building each scene so they would not only be understood, but would also touch viewers. Sometimes, for example, a scene would look perfect on paper, but the images chosen to depict it were not sufficient or did not perfectly match up to offer the right movement and sense. And hence the research had to be restarted. In true Redditor fashion, the YouTube commenters currently hanging around the page are pointing out the video's oddities. The images feature a number tag on their right side, which means it's possible to precisely locate a family wearing goat masks (image 380, at 00:27), an image of naked sadhus bathing in India (image 411, at 0:29), and the Power Rangers (image 392, at 00:28), which as you'll see in a minute, are not really natural parts of the whole love to bingo storyline, but also do not detract from the whole thing being SO GOOD. Let us know if you see any more strange stuff in the comments. WATCH VIDEO
