  • In Mexico, Extortion Soars Amid Crackdown On Drugs

When the threatening phone calls demanding $20,000 in protection money began in December, Dr. Roman Gomez Gaviria shrugged them off, believing his clinic on the outskirts of Mexico City couldn't possibly be of interest to criminal gangs. A few months later, his sense of security was shattered when three armed men barged into his office screaming "Dr. Ramon, you bastard, where are you?"

"They tried to tackle me, to take me out of the clinic, when I saw that each one had a pistol tucked into his belt," said Gaviria, recounting the ordeal. "They thought that, because I'm a doctor, I wasn't going to resist."

Such shakedown rackets have long targeted businesses in the most violent corners of Mexico. Now the practice is spreading. One anti-crime group estimates that kidnapping across the country has jumped by one-third so far this year compared to 2012. And as the extortion industry expands, it has drawn both experienced criminals and imitators.

Experts say the increase is a byproduct of Mexico's crackdown on the nation's drug gangs. As authorities nab cartel bosses and break up chains of command, hundreds of lower-level gunmen and traffickers are desperate for income and looking for income in new places.

Targets include everything from multinational businesses to corner pharmacies and unsuspecting holidaymakers. The gangs are less organized, but more ubiquitous than the drug cartels, affecting broad swaths of the country.

"It affects all economic activity. It discourages investment," said security expert Jorge Chabat.

In the first eight months of 2013, there were 5,335 reported extortion attempts nationwide, equal to the number for all of the previous year. If the current pace continues, the total could surpass 8,000 this year, almost twice as many as in 2007.

The tourism industry, Mexico's third-largest source of foreign revenue, has been one of the hardest hit. Largely untouched when the U.S.-backed drug war began in late 2006, the state of Oaxaca had quietly become the turf of the Zetas cartel. In recent months, guests of at least a dozen hotels in scenic, colonial Oaxaca city have started receiving calls from strangers saying they would be kidnapped if they didn't pay between $380 and $1,500, hotel industry and security officials said.

"The way they operate is to call the hotel, ask to speak to a particular room and then start threatening" the guest, said Joaquin Carrillo Ruiz, an assistant state prosecutor in Oaxaca. Many of the tourists, all from Mexico, reported the crime instead of paying up, but that hasn't calmed worries in Oaxaca, where tourism is a vital source of outside income.

"We have to stop this in its tracks," said Juan Carlos Rivera, the head of the Oaxaca Hotel Association. "If we don't, it could escalate."

As if to prove his point, a group of Spanish musicians were hit by a telephone extortion scheme in Mexico City this month, though none was kidnapped or harmed.

But even authorities acknowledge that the vast majority of extortions go unreported — as many as 92 percent according to a survey of crime victims by the National Statistics Institute. The same survey from April indicated that extortion is now the second most common crime after street robberies, with 7.6 percent of those surveyed in 2012 saying they were extortion victims, up about two percentage points from the year before.

    Moose Die-Off Alarms Scientists

Across North America — in places as far-flung as Montana and British Columbia, New Hampshire and Minnesota — moose populations are in steep decline. And no one is sure why.

Twenty years ago, Minnesota had two geographically separate moose populations. One of them has virtually disappeared since the 1990s, declining to fewer than 100 from 4,000.

The other population, in northeastern Minnesota, is dropping 25 percent a year and is now fewer than 3,000, down from 8,000. (The moose mortality rate used to be 8 percent to 12 percent a year.) As a result, wildlife officials have suspended all moose hunting.

Here in Montana, moose hunting permits fell to 362 last year, from 769 in 1995.

“Something’s changed,” said Nicholas DeCesare, a biologist with the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks who is counting moose in this part of the state — one of numerous efforts across the continent to measure and explain the decline. “There’s fewer moose out there, and hunters are working harder to find them.”

What exactly has changed remains a mystery. Several factors are clearly at work. But a common thread in most hypotheses is climate change.

Winters have grown substantially shorter across much of the moose’s range. In New Hampshire, a longer fall with less snow has greatly increased the number of winter ticks, a devastating parasite. “You can get 100,000 ticks on a moose,” said Kristine Rines, a biologist with the state’s Fish and Game Department.

In Minnesota, the leading culprits are brain worms and liver flukes. Both spend part of their life cycles in snails, which thrive in moist environments.

Another theory is heat stress. Moose are made for cold weather, and when the temperature rises above 23 degrees Fahrenheit in winter, as has happened more often in recent years, they expend extra energy to stay cool. That can lead to exhaustion and death.

In the Cariboo Mountains of British Columbia, a recent study pinned the decline of moose on the widespread killing of forest by an epidemic of pine bark beetles, which seem to thrive in warmer weather. The loss of trees left the moose exposed to human and animal predators.

In Smithers, British Columbia, in April, a moose — starving and severely infested with ticks — wandered into the flower section of a Safeway market. It was euthanized.

Scientists and officials say other factors could still emerge. Because most moose die in the fall, the next few months may provide insight.

“It’s complicated because there’s so many pieces of this puzzle that could be impacted by climate change,” said Erika Butler, until recently the wildlife veterinarian at the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

The stakes go beyond the moose themselves. The animals are ecosystem engineers; when they browse shrubs, for example, they create habitat for some nesting birds.

And moose contribute to the economy. In New Hampshire, for instance, moose-watching tourism is a $115-million-a-year business, according to Ms. Rines. Hunting permits also generate revenue.

Moose deaths are hard to study, scientists say. The moose is a member of the deer family, but unlike deer it is a solitary animal that does not run in herds, so it can be hard to track. Moreover, moose have such high levels of body fat that they decompose rapidly; after 24 hours, a necropsy has little value.

In January, Minnesota started an unusual $1.2 million study using advanced monitoring technology to find moose as soon as they die. Live animals are captured and fitted with collars that give their location every 15 minutes, and they are given feed containing a tiny transmitter that remains in the body and monitors heart rate and temperature. Then the moose are released back into the wild.

“If the heart stops beating, it sends a text message to our phone that says, ‘I’m dead at x and y coordinates,’ ” said Dr. Butler, who leads the study. The messages are monitored around the clock; when a moose dies, a team on call rushes to the scene by car or helicopter.

The winter tick problem in New Hampshire is particularly vexing. The animals lose so much blood they can become anemic. Worse, the ticks drive the moose crazy; they constantly scratch, tearing off large patches of hair.

Some moose lose so much hair they look pale, even spectral; some people call them “ghost moose.” When it rains in the spring, the moose, deprived of their warm coats, then become hypothermic.

Winter ticks hatch in the fall and begin to climb aboard their host. They are dormant until January or February, when they start to feed, molt into adults and then drop off.

Moose spend a lot of time feeding in lakes, but wading in water doesn’t drown the ticks, which form an air bubble that allows them to survive immersion in water.

New Hampshire’s winter tick problem is a relatively recent phenomenon. But then, so are moose. The animals were hunted out of existence during Colonial times; they returned to the state only in the 1970s.

Telangana row Chandrababu Naidu begins fast in Delhi against Telangana

Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief N Chandrababu Naidu on Monday began an indefinite fast in the capital against the Congress government's proposal to bifurcate Andhra Pradesh and create a Telangana state.

The former Andhra Pradesh chief minister termed the centre's move "political match fixing".

"The Congress party did not follow any procedure. It took this decision for political gains. The Congress party is responsible for what is happening in Andhra Pradesh," Naidu told reporters.

Earlier Sunday, in coastal Andhra and the Rayalaseema regions of the state, several towns and hundreds of villages plunged into darkness, and several trains were cancelled as electricity employees launched an indefinite strike to protest against the decision to carve out the separate state.

North West Photo Shared By Kim Kardashian On Instagram Proves She Might Be Hollywood's Cutest Baby

Kim Kardashian took a trip to France for Paris Fashion Week for a few days, leaving her 3-month-old daughter, North West, at home for the first time.

There's nothing like the bond between a mother and child, and not surprisingly, the 32-year-old reality star missed her baby. On Friday, Kardashian shared the second known photo of North with the public via Instagram and wrote, "I missed waking up with my little angel."

North is just too cute with those humongous eyes, and we can't wait to see her in all those adorable designer outfits her parents were gifted last week.

The first photo of Nori, as she's been nicknamed, was shared by Kanye West when he appeared on Kris Jenner's talk show in August.

Madonna Was Raped At Knifepoint Soon After Moving To New York, She Tells Harper's Bazaar

Madonna penned an essay in Harper's Bazaar's "Daring Issue" for November, and in it, she recounts a horrifying story about her early years in New York.

In the essay, Madonna conjures up her early years as a daring nonconformist, attests to her "strangeness" and says she didn't have very many friends. She then explains she moved to New York to become a "REAL artist ... To be able to express myself in a city of nonconformists. To revel and shimmy and shake in a world and be surrounded by daring people."

What followed was something more horrible than she had ever expected:

New York wasn't everything I thought it would be. It did not welcome me with open arms. The first year, I was held up at gunpoint. Raped on the roof of a building I was dragged up to with a knife in my back, and had my apartment broken into three times. I don't know why; I had nothing of value after they took my radio the first time.

Though she admits nothing in her Rochester, Mich., upbringing had prepared her for her experiences at the time, Madonna says that in New York she "felt like I had plugged into another universe. I felt like a warrior plunging my way through the crowds to survive. Blood pumping through my veins, I was poised for survival. I felt alive."

She recaps her essay by coming full circle with the Big Apple. "[H]ere I am, divorced and living in New York," Madonna writes. "I have been blessed with four amazing children. I try to teach them to think outside the box. To be daring. To choose to do things because they are the right thing to do, not because everybody else is doing them."

Surprisingly, this isn't the first time Madonna has chosen to relive that difficult story. In a 1995 interview with New Musical Express, Madonna revealed for the first time that she was raped at the beginning of her music career, according to the Chicago Tribune. "Although it was devastating at the time, I know that it made me a much stronger person in retrospect. It forced me to be a survivor," she told the British magazine.

Katy Perry on her future ‘I’ll probably turn into more of a Joni Mitchell’

Katy Perry has said that she will “turn into more of a Joni Mitchell” as her career progresses.

The singer is set to release her new album ‘Prism’ on October 28 but, in an interview with Billboard, she claimed she was planning on swapping her trademark pop sound for a folkier direction in the future.

“I love Madonna to death, but she’s never going to give me that damn baton,” she said. “I’ll probably turn into more of a Joni Mitchell. As I inch towards my 30s, I think my fourth record will be more of an acoustic guitar album. That’s where I started when I was first discovered by Glen Ballard and got my first record deal.”

She added: ‘We’ll see ‘I can’t get ahead of myself. I’m still doing the work: I’m a good balance of left and right brain, and to be an artist with a long career, you’ve got to have both. One thing John [Mayer] said to me was, ‘It’s harder maintaining success than finding it.’ I’ve got a few records under my belt, and I still feel like a brand new artist. People still want that truth to cut through.”

Perry is expected to debut new material from ‘Prism’ this evening, as she plays the closing night of this year’s iTunes Festival at London’s Roundhouse. Previously, she has unveiled the lead single from the LP, ‘Roar’, which spent a fortnight at Number One on the UK’s Official Singles Chart, and she recently previewed another track from the album called ‘Dark Horse’

Gene Simmons On Kurt Cobain And Amy Winehouse: 'What, Just 'Cause You Died, That Makes You An Icon?'

Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse are often hailed as music legends whose lives were taken from us far too soon. Gene Simmons begs to differ.

The Kiss frontman says just because Cobain and Winehouse were acclaimed musicians who died young does not mean they're icons. His remarks, made during an interview with UK's Team Rock Radio, were part of a larger tirade bemoaning the state of rock music.

"Let me see -- Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, The Who and just on and on," Simmons said, listing name he feels qualify as legends. "And through the '70s, Aerosmith, Kiss, Led Zeppelin. Now from 1984 until today, name one superstar that's bigger than their music, and not just somebody that's recorded one or two records, but another Queen or another AC/DC? None, you can't name one.

"Kurt Cobain -- no, that's one or two records. That's not enough. Amy Winehouse -- that's one or two records. That's not enough. What, just 'cause you died, that makes you an icon?

Box office update 'Gravity' blasts off with $17.5 million Friday, could hit $50 million for the weekend

Warner Bros.’ $80 million thriller Gravity demonstrated some major pull on its opening day at the box office. The film, which stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney as stranded astronauts, scored a tremendous $17.5 million on its first day, which puts the film on pace for a weekend in the $50 million range.

Gravity will almost certainly become the best opening weekend ever for both of its stars, surprassing Bullock’s $39 million start for The Heat earlier this year and Clooney’s $42.9 million debut for Batman & Robin in 1997. It looks like Warner Bros.’ bold, stylish ad campaign has paid off.

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 held up alright in second place, dipping 49 percent from its first Friday. The former box office champion grossed $4.7 million, which puts it on pace for a $20 million sophomore frame and a $59 million total by Sunday night.

Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake’s crime drama Runner Runner didn’t inspire many crowds to run to the theater. Fox’s $30 million film grossed an awful $2.8 million from 3,026 theaters, yielding a sad $909 location average. The poorly reviewed title will finish the weekend with about $7.5 million.

Casey Kasem Family Feud Erupts, Kids Claim Stepmom Is Banning Them From Seeing Ailing Father

The 81-year-old icon, who rose to fame as the host of the "American Top 40" countdown, has not had contact with family and friends in ages, according to TMZ. Kasem's children, Kerri, Mike and Julie, have purportedly tried to get in touch with him for three months, but to no avail. His wife, Jean, is reportedly behind the issue.

On Tuesday, Oct. 1, Kasem's kids staged a protest outside his Holmby Hills, Los Angeles estate with his brother, friends and former business associates, KABC reported. Kerri told the network Jean refuses to answer their calls and tells them to go away when they try to visit the home, despite the fact that their father's condition is "deteriorating."

"I've got a feeling I might not see him again, and that's why I'm here," Kasem's brother, Mouner, who hasn't seen the star in a year, told KABC.

Kerri told the New York Daily News that she and her siblings aren't interested in money, although they are not named as beneficiaries in their dad's will. They have good jobs and personal trust funds, and are only concerned about Kasem's well-being.

"My dad is very sick, and we have been completely shut off from him for the last three months," the 41-year-old told the Daily News. "There is no money issue here, we just want to see our dad. We love him, and everyone knows his kids and grandkids are a source of joy for him."

Jean allegedly called police on Tuesday in an attempt to get the protesters away from the house, TMZ reported.

Lorde Charts Her First No. 1 On The Billboard Hot 100 With 'Royals'

Lorde took the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for her song "Royals" this week, making her the youngest artist to do so in 26 years.

The 16-year-old singer, who was born in New Zealand, rose to the top of the chart from holding the No. 2 spot last week. She topped Katy Perry, whose "Roar" took the No. 2 spot this week, and Miley Cyrus, who came in third with her latest, "Wrecking Ball."

According to Billboard, Lorde is the youngest singer to take the top spot on the Hot 100 since 1987 when 16-year-old Tiffany did so with her earworm "I Think We're Alone Now."

Industry veteran Stevie Wonder holds the honor of the youngest artist ever to hit No. 1, taking the title at the age of 13 for 1963's "Fingertips - Part 2." Lorde comes in behind the youngest female singer to reach this success, 15-year-old Little Peggy March who hit No. 1 in 1963 with "I Will Follow Him."

This isn't the first honor that Lorde has earned with the release of her hit single "Royals." Earlier this year, she became the first woman to top Billboard's Alternative Songs Chart in 17 years.

After signing a record deal with Universal Music Group at the age of 13, Lorde released her debut studio album, "Pure Heroine," in September.

"I've seen people compare me to just about every female slightly alt[ernative] female musician because people feel the need to put females with other females, which I guess I understand, but I think I'm different because my music is accessible, but it's also smart and those are two things that don't often go together musically," Lorde told HuffPost in July. "I think it's probably because I'm an Internet kid. I'm watching 'Adventure Time' but I'm also reading Allen Ginsberg. I'm a mesh of references -- fun and smart? I don't know where I'd put myself. I'd like to think I'm doing something different."

Syria Chemical Disarmament team Begins Mission

International disarmament experts were to begin cataloguing Syria's vast arsenal of chemical weapons on Wednesday, checking a list of sites provided by Damascus and conducting on the spot tests ahead of its destruction.

The 19-strong team from The Hague-based Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) arrived in Damascus on Tuesday to implement UN security council resolution 2118 ordering the elimination of Syria's chemical arsenal by mid-2014.

The mission was to begin work a day after Syria's opposition warned of a "humanitarian disaster" in the Damascus suburb of Moadamiyet al-Sham, one of the areas reportedly targeted in an August 21 sarin attack that killed hundreds of people.

It also comes after Syria's information minister insisted that President Bashar al-Assad would stay in office and could run for another term in elections next year.

Assad's departure is a key demand of the opposition, who insist it must be a pillar of a mooted Geneva peace conference.

The disarmament team includes 19 OPCW inspectors and 14 UN staffers who drove to a five-star Damascus hotel in a 20-vehicle UN convoy from the Lebanese capital, Beirut.

On arrival, the team set up a logistics base. "In the coming days, their efforts are expected to focus on verifying information provided by the Syrian authorities and the initial planning phase of helping the country destroy its chemical weapons production facilities," a UN statement said.

This should be completed by November 1, it added. The task is huge, as Syria's arsenal is believed to include more than 1,000 tonnes of sarin, mustard gas and other banned chemicals stored at an estimated 45 sites across the war-torn country.

The mission is the first in OPCW history to take place in a country wracked by civil war.

The OPCW group arrived as a team of UN experts left after probing seven alleged gas attacks.

The UN experts hope to present a final report by late October, after an initial one in September confirmed sarin was used in the August 21 attacks.

The UN resolution ordering the destruction of Syria's chemical weapons came after the United States threatened military action, accusing Assad's forces of deliberately killing hundreds of civilians with rocket-delivered nerve agents.

Syria denied this but agreed to relinquish its arsenal under a US-Russian deal, effectively heading off a strike.

The OPCW has said it has no reason to doubt information provided by Syria on its chemical weapons and Assad has said he will comply with the terms of the resolution.

Top on the inspection list will be production sites due to be disabled by late October or early November.

"According to the OPCW-UN Security Council deadline, the entire chemical weapons stockpile must be eliminated in the first half of next year," said the UN statement.

Security Council Resolution 2118 also calls for a peace conference as soon as possible in Geneva, and UN chief Ban Ki-moon set a target date of mid-November.

However, the prospects for such a conference remain uncertain, with Syria insisting Assad's departure is not up for discussion, despite it being a key opposition demand.

Mallika Sherawat to pocket Rs. 30 crore for The Bachelorette?

Everyone knows that when Bollywood stars are roped in to host or judge reality shows, they get paid hefty amounts. Mallika Sherawat, who is the latest actor to have joined this list, will also soon make her TV debut with the show, The Bachelorette India — Mere Khayalon Ki Mallika.

    And if
sources are to be believed, she will pocket a whopping Rs. 30 crore at the end of her 30-episode stint. Industry insiders claim that Mallika is being paid Rs. 1 crore for each episode. "The budget of the show is Rs. 50 crore (excluding marketing) — this makes it the most expensive series on the channel," says the source.

However, Ajit Thakur, general manager of the channel that will air the show, refuses to divulge specific figures. He says, "She’s an expensive star, and international one who lives in Los Angeles. She gets paid in dollars there, so she does come at a price. And we wanted someone like her for the show. But we can’t comment about her fee."

While Mallika has never had to try too hard to make headlines — she has been embroiled in a series of controversies in the past — her show, somehow, has not yet created a lot of buzz among viewers.

But the insider claims that the makers have intentionally kept the show out of the news. "They’ve deliberately kept a low profile because other big-budget shows like Mahabharat, Bigg Boss, 24 and Kaun Banega Crorepati were being promoted in the last few weeks. They felt it made sense to talk about it once the hype around all the other serials has died down."

Couple sentenced to 18 years for rape, death of 10-month-old daughter

udge Majeke Mabesele gave Adriaan Netto, 37, and his girlfriend, 34, four years each for culpable homicide, three for child abuse, and 15 for rape. The sentences for culpable homicide and rape would run concurrently.

Before sentencing the couple, the judge said he had a duty to send out a clear message to communities and parents that violation of children's rights would not be tolerated.

The couple sat in the dock with their heads bowed as the sentences were read out.

Mabesele said they had shown no remorse for the child's death.

"It is evident she died a painful and undignified death at the hands of her parents. With the seriousness in nature of the crime, society will look to the courts to dish out harsh sentences. I'm mindful that reasoning should be above emotions to avoid sentencing in anger," he said.

Mabesele said the couple had faced life sentences but he had taken into account their personal circumstances.

Although the court had a duty to impose the harshest sentence, he had to consider their two other children.

"I don't agree with the argument raised by the State on the other children being well taken care of. These children should be raised and guided through life by their parents," he said.

On September 18, Mabesele found the couple guilty of culpable homicide, child abuse, and the rape of their 10-month-old baby girl.

Mabesele found that while the couple had not murdered the child, as charged, their neglect and abuse made them culpable for the baby's death in March last year.

"[I] conclude that the deceased sustained bodily injuries while under the care of her parents," the judge said.

"They had a legal duty to look after her... Being 10-months-old, the deceased was unable to injure herself."

Mabesele said the baby's injuries, including broken ribs, anal damage caused by penetration, plus vaginal and liver damage, had been inflicted on the child.

Testimony by Netto and the woman that they did not know how the baby was injured was not true.

Angelina Jolie's Double Rings Ignite Rumors Of Secret Wedding

Angelina Jolie was spotted recently wearing not one, but two sparklers on her left hand. The double rings have some wondering if she has secretly married Brad Pitt.

The gossip mill began churning with talk of a secret Pitt-Jolie wedding when the "Maleficent" star was spotted wearing a second ring on her wedding finger in Bondi Beach, Australia, on Sunday (Sept. 29), according to E! News.

RadarOnline.com notes Jolie's new ring appears to be thicker and made of a lighter precious metal than the gold one that appeared on her finger in the spring.

Click over to Us Weekly to see an up-close image of the rings.

Back in March, the 38-year-old mother of six was seen wearing a simple gold band in place of her massive $500,000 engagement ring when she visited the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda on a goodwill mission. Jolie shot down rumors of a wedding when approached by a TMZ cameraman.

In June, VH1's "The Gossip Table" claimed the A-list couple had finally set a date for their highly anticipated nuptials. The report alleged the ceremony would happen over the summer and would be a private affair.

If a wedding hasn't happened yet, it's unlikely the Oscar-winner has time to plan much of anything at the moment. In early September, she arrived in Australia, where she will direct "Unbroken" at Sydney’s Fox Studios Australia and Village Roadshow Studios on the Gold Coast, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Filming is scheduled to begin Oct. 21.

Farrah Abraham's Porn Video Payday Was About $10,000, Not $1 Million

At least Farrah Abraham made major bank off her porn video with James Deen, right?

Not quite, claim some in the adult industry.

While the 22-year-old former "Teen Mom" star claims to have sold what would become "Farrah Superstar: Backdoor Teen Mom" to Vivid Entertainment for $1.5 million, a source close to the situation told FOX411, Abraham actually sold the tape for about $10,000.

Meanwhile, professional sex tape broker Kevin Blatt told the website that former "Pippi Longstocking" star Tami Erin recently received the same offer from Vivid after she shot a sex tape of her own.

“Tami Erin was offered $10,000 up-front which is standard for Vivid,” Blatt told FOX411. “It is what they offer every celebrity, not a million dollars.”

Other adult industry insiders confirmed Blatt's claims, telling FOX411 that the former "Teen Mom" star "got $10,000 up-front and 30 percent of sales, minus the cost of production."

It wouldn't be the first time Abraham has bent the truth, since the whole porn video was meant to be marketed as a "leaked" sex tape in the first place. Of course, that didn't work out when her co-star Deen refused to go along with the plan, and told everyone that he had been paid to film the X-rated video with Abraham.

Though Abraham may not have been paid much for the film up-front, that doesn't mean she hasn't profited overall. In July, TMZ reported that Abraham raked in close to $120,000 in royalties in just two months. The former reality star's porn video was indeed wildly successful and received more than 2 million visitors in just the first 12 hours after it was released. She is also poised to bring in the bucks from her new line of sex toys made by Topco Sales, which will be available starting in January 2014.

Kim Kardashian Rocks A Leather Skirt On Paris Vacation

Kim Kardashian rocked leather in Paris on Monday night for an evening out with Kanye West, as Kimye continue their whirlwind European trip.

Kardashian hit the town in a patent-leather, high-waisted skirt, a cozy white T-shirt and some embellished stiletto sandals. The 32-year-old beauty and her boyfriend were seen exiting a car and heading to dinner at Hotel Costes, according to the photo agency that secured the images.

Kimye's Parisian vacation is the first time the reality starlet has been away from her daughter, North, whom she gave birth to almost four months ago. But the new mama didn't leave home without some reminders of her baby girl.

Along with a gold "Nori" nameplate necklace, Kardashian has a photo of North as her iPhone screensaver, E! News noted. Keen eyes noticed the snapshot of the infant on Kardashian's phone in a photo taken by paparazzi.

When her trip is over, she will head home with an arm full of gifts for little Nori, including designer baby duds made specially for her by Givenchy's Riccardo Tisci, Alexander Wang, Lanvin, Celine's Phoebe Philo and Maison Martin Margiela.

Syria conflict: Chemical arms experts cross border

Syria has said it will co-operate with the mission, set up after a US-Russia deal endorsed by the UN.

It is the first time the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) has been asked to destroy a country's chemical arms during a war.

Correspondents say the OPCW inspectors face a daunting task.

Syria's Foreign Minister Walid Muallem has said that seven out of the 19 chemical weapons sites declared by the government last month are in combat zones.

The BBC's Jim Muir in Beirut says it could be complicated for the inspectors to gain access to these areas; local truces may be needed to allow the work to proceed.

A spokesman for the opposition Syrian National Coalition, Monzer Akbik, told the BBC that the rebel Free Syrian Army (FSA) would ensure that inspectors "will be protected, and granted access to all locations".

However, the FSA is only one of several rebel factions operating in Syria, and its local commanders have often displayed a high degree of autonomy.

UN chemical weapons inspectors filed an interim report last month confirming that the nerve agent sarin had been used in an attack on the outskirts of Damascus on 21 August that killed hundreds of people.

Syria's chemical weapons arsenal is believed to include more than 1,000 tonnes of sarin, the blister agent sulphur mustard and other banned chemicals stored at dozens of sites.

Last month, it submitted to the OPCW a full account of its arsenal, as part of the US-Russian initiative that saw it accede to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC).

An OPCW official told the AFP news agency on Sunday: "At this point, we have absolutely no reason to doubt the information provided by the Syrian regime."
    Logistics talks

The OPCW inspectors - based in The Hague - stayed overnight in Beirut, Lebanon, before crossing into Syria on Tuesday.

They were first expected to visit the foreign ministry in Damascus to discuss operational logistics before verifying the sites and making assessments.

The arms monitors are then expected to destroy the equipment used for mixing and preparing chemical weapons, as well as the munitions used to deliver them.

Under the agreement between the United States and Russia, this work should be finished by November. Some chemical stocks will be removed safely and destroyed outside Syria, while others will be collected up for destruction inside the country.

Amitabh Bachchan turns dance teacher in Kaun Banega Crorepati

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan, who has his own distinct style of dancing, will be seen teaching a contestant of Kaun Banega Crorepati a step or two of what he learnt from actor Shahid Kapoor recently.

During a recent episode of the game show, Shahid taught Big B a few steps on the song Agal bagal from his latest movie Phata Poster Nikla Hero.

When Amitabh Bachchan came to know that one of the hot seat contestants, Deepika, cannot dance, he decided to don the role of a dance teacher and taught her a few moves.

The duo then grooved and matched steps on the same song. Not bad that the 70-year-old is not just preaching the show's theme - Seekhna bandh toh jeetna bandh (No learning means no winning) - but also practising it by imparting some of his talent.

Bollywood star Actor Sanjay Dutt gets 14-day break from prison

Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt, in prison since May, arrived at his Mumbai home this afternoon after being granted 14 days of leave because he is unwell.

"I'm a law abiding citizen. I want to spend this time peacefully with my family," he said to reporters before entering his house in Bandra where he used to live with his wife Maanyata and their two children Iqra and Shahraan.

The 53-year-old actor was sentenced in March by the Supreme Court to five years in prison in a case linked to the 1993 terror attack in Mumbai, in which 250 people died in serial bombings. He was convicted for possession of an automatic rifle and a pistol that were supplied to him by men subsequently convicted for the bomb blasts.

The Supreme Court reduced his prison sentence to five years from the six-year term initially handed down.

The actor had served 18 months in jail before being released on bail in 2007 pending an appeal, so he was ordered to spend the next 3 1/2 years behind bars.

Mr Dutt had earlier been acquitted of the more serious charges of terrorism and conspiracy.

The 1993 bombings were seen at the time as the world's worst terrorist attack, with 13 bombs exploding over a two-hour period across Mumbai. Powerful explosives were packed into cars and scooters parked near India's main Bombay Stock Exchange and other sites in the city. Apart from the 257 dead, more than 720 people were injured in the attack.

Lady Gaga Does Molly And Has Sex In The Woods, According To Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga sat down with Andy Cohen to discuss sex and drugs, among other topics. She admitted to "sleeping naked," having taken "a ride on a disco stick" in the woods ... "on the floor, in the grass," and -- perhaps even less surprisingly-- using Molly.

Admitting she used to use the drug a bit more frequently in her "raver days" (whatever that means), Gaga cautioned against use of the pure form of MDMA. "Be careful with Molly," she warned.

Following her PSA, Gaga spoke out about her feud with Christina Aguilera, saying wisely, "I just think it's very unfair for somebody to pit another woman against another woman."

Agreed. However, we'll just have to wait on an explanation regarding Gaga's feuds with Azealia Banks, Perez Hilton and Adam Levine ...

Chvrches Singer Refuses To Tolerate Online Sexism And Misogyny

Synth-pop band Chvrches is currently all the rage, dropping an outstanding full-length album last week and even delivering a sterling cover of a Whitney Houston classic. All the fame, however, isn't without it's downsides: Singer Lauren Mayberry has penned a sharply worded editorial ripping would-be fans who regularly proposition and/or sexually harass her on the internet.

The entirety of the op-ed is posted over on the Guardian's website, but here are a few choice passages:

Last week, I posted a screengrab of one of the many inappropriate messages sent to the band's social networks every day. After making the post, I sat back and watched with an increasingly open mouth as more and more people commented on the statement. At the time of writing, Facebook stats tell me that the post had reached 581,376 people, over five times the number of people who subscribe to the page itself, with almost 1,000 comments underneath the image. Comments range from the disgusted and supportive to the offensively vile. My current favourites from the latter category include:

"This isn't rape culture. You'll know rape culture when I'm raping you, bitch"

"I have your address and I will come round to your house and give u anal and you will love it you twat lol"

"Act like a slut, getting treated like a sluy [sic]"

"It's just one of those things you'll need to learn to deal with. If you're easily offended, then maybe the music industry isn't for you"

But why should women "deal" with this? I am incredibly lucky to be doing the job I am doing at the moment – and painfully aware of the fact that I would not be able to make music for a living without people on the internet caring about our band. But does that mean that I need to accept that it's OK for people to make comments like this, because that's how women in my position are spoken to?

Mayberry notes that sexism can cut against men, too, but states that she is speaking from her own experience as a woman who fronts a band.

What I do not accept, however, is that it is all right for people to make comments ranging from "a bit sexist but generally harmless" to openly sexually aggressive. That it is something that "just happens". Is the casual objectification of women so commonplace that we should all just suck it up, roll over and accept defeat? I hope not. Objectification, whatever its form, is not something anyone should have to "just deal with"

I read them every morning when I get up. I read them after soundcheck. I read them, as we all do with our emails and notifications, on my phone on the bus or when I have a break in the day. And, after a while, despite the positive messages in the majority, the aggressive, intrusive nature of the other kind becomes overwhelming. During this past tour, I am embarrassed to admit that I have had more than one prolonged toilet cry and a "Come on, get a hold of yourself, you got this" conversation with myself in a bathroom mirror when particularly exasperated and tired out. But then, after all the sniffling had ceased, I asked myself: why should I cry about this? Why should I feel violated, uncomfortable and demeaned? Why should we all keep quiet?

Sia's 'Elastic Heart' Single For 'Hunger Games: Catching Fire' Drops With The Weeknd And Diplo

Counting down the days until the second "Hunger Games" movie, "Catching Fire," hits theaters? This new gem from the star-studded soundtrack should tide fans over for at least a few days. Called "Elastic Heart," the track is out from Sia. The Diplo-produced track also features The Weeknd.

The soundtrack, which will make its full debut on Nov. 19, three days before the film's Nov. 22 release, also features songs from Christina Aguilera, Lorde, Coldplay, and Patti Smith, among others.

Fairfax consortium bids $4.7 billion to take BlackBerry private

The $9 a share tentative offer, from a consortium led by property and casualty insurer Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd(FFH.TO), will set a floor for any counteroffers that might emerge for Blackberry, which has been on the block since August.

As an investor, Fairfax Chief Executive Prem Watsa is often described as the Canadian Warren Buffett because he also takes the long view.

Blackberry shares peaked above $148 in June 2008 when the company's devices were still the top choice for bankers, politicians and lawyers.

The stock, halted pending the announcement on Monday, closed below the offer price on Nasdaq, at $8.82, indicating the market's lack of faith that other bids would emerge.

"I would think a competing buyout offer is quite unlikely," said Elvis Picardo, strategist at Global Securities in Vancouver. "The miniscule premium, and the muted market reaction, is another indication that the market views the odds of a competing bid as slim."

BlackBerry, based in Waterloo, Ontario, once dominated the market for secure on-your-hip email. But it introduced consumer-friendly touchscreen smartphones only after it lost the lead to Apple Inc's(AAPL.O) iPhone and devices using Google Inc's(GOOG.O) Android operating system.

BlackBerry has until November 4 to seek superior offers, which the Fairfax group has the right to match. The group is seeking financing from Bank of America Merrill Lynch and BMO Capital Markets to complete the deal and has until that November 4 deadline to conduct its due diligence.

A BlackBerry statement did not name members of the consortium, although many in the financial community see Canada's deep-pocketed and influential pension funds as likely participants.

"We need to be careful given disclosure constraints, but we can say that we are focused on a strong Canadian solution," said Fairfax spokesman Paul Rivett.

The pension funds, with assets around the world, traditionally take a long-term view in their investment decisions. Officials at the biggest funds either did not reply to requests for comment, said they had no information or declined to comment.

"We never discuss whether or not we plan to enter into any investment," said Deborah Allan, spokeswoman for Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan.

    CANADIAN BUFFETT

Watsa stepped down from the BlackBerry board of directors in August, citing a potential conflict of interest, as the company said it was exploring a sale.

Canada's Globe and Mail newspaper quoted Watsa as saying that a significant amount of the equity in the deal will come from within the country. The consortium included neither strategic players, nor other technology firms, he said.

Sofia Vergara Went To Jimmy Fallon's Emmys After-Party, Ate A Cheeseburger And Twerked

Sexy Colombian Sofia Vergara brought pretty much her entire family to the Emmys Sunday night. She looked predictably amazing in a red dress, rolling her Rs, and heading up to the stage with the "Modern Family" cast, for their Outstanding Comedy win.

However, it looks like the best part of Vergara's night came after the awards were over. The actress took to social media site WhoSay to share some photos of her night, like this gem, captioned "Miley Cyrus this is where the twerk was invented. Colombia!"

This unapologetic dancing photo was apparently directed at Jesse Tyler Ferguson, with the message "Sorry @jessetyler this is how we dance sometimes."

And here's our personal favorite, explained simply with the words "Jimmy Fallons party favors."

Courtney Stodden Drunken Upskirts and Cleave Drops in London

As an American abroad she's making the most of Europe's lower drinking age.

But it seems 19-year-old Courtney Stodden may have seriously overindulged during a night out at Whisky Mist in London on Thursday night

The American reality TV star was left struggling to stay clothed following a night of partying with her Celebrity Big Brother housemate, transsexual antiques dealer Lauren Harries.

The blonde teenager, who got DD-cup breast implants in June, even needed some help from a mystery man to stay upright as she almost tottered off her absurdly high heels.

As ever Courtney was happy to flash the flesh, in a teeny tiny black strapless dress which barely covered her considerable assets.

However, Courtney appeared unconcerned, laughing, smiling and posing for the waiting photographers, once she finally made it into her cab unscathed, albeit with a huge bruise on her left thigh.

Stodden’s long blonde hair was piled on top of her head and looked noticeably more tousled by the time she left the club.

There was no sign of Courtney’s 53-year old husband Doug Hutchinson but Lauren looked like she too had a good night as she joked around with her new friend in the taxi.

Courtney married Green Mile actor Doug when she was just 16 and he was 51 after they met over the internet.

Despite the controversy surrounding their age difference, Courtney and Doug have been married for almost three years and their union appears stronger than ever.

Although Courtney was accused of flirting with lothario Mario Falcone during her time in the Celebrity Big Brother house in the UK, she  set the record straight during her eviction interview.

One of Courtney’s most flirtatious moments in the house came when viewers saw the blonde teen handcuffed to Mario as part of a task, with the pair becoming increasingly tactile as it went on.

'Thelma & Louise' Reunion: Susan Sarandon, Geena Davis Reunite 22 Years Later

They starred together in the career-making film "Thelma & Louise" 22 years ago, when both were in their 30s and 40s. But the love between Susan Sarandon, 66, and Geena Davis, 57, has only grown, judging from the photographs of the pair happily posing on the red carpet Thursday night in Los Angeles. The actresses and friends held hands and sat next to each other at Montage Beverly Hills for Heifer International's "Beyond Hunger: A Place At The Table" gala, a charity event benefiting marginalized women.

On their experience working together on the Ridley Scott-directed film, about two female friends who embark on a bandits-style adventure, Davis told the Wall Street Journal in 2011 that she hadn't anticipated the impact on women the film would eventually have.

"I don't think any of us in the movie had any idea the reaction it was going to get. It was very unusual because it had two excellent female parts, and I desperately wanted to be in it," she said.

Davis added: "Afterwards, I had women holding me by the lapels, so I could hear their story. And that experience really brought home to me how few opportunities we give women to feel like that about a movie."

Chicago Gun Violence: Man Shot In Gold Coast Over Parking Spot Among 6 Shot Overnight Saturday

One day after 13 people were wounded in a park on Chicago's Southwest Side, shining a national spotlight on gun violence in the Windy City once more, shootings continued Friday evening into early Saturday in the Windy City.

At least four men were killed in shootings citywide since Friday evening and a fifth individual -- a 14-year-old boy -- was fatally shot Friday afternoon, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The teen -- Tommy McNeal, 14 -- was found lying unresponsive with a gunshot wound to his back in the 6900 block of South Vernon Avenue about 1:35 p.m. Friday, the Tribune reports.

In other fatal shootings, 18-year-old Jaleel Pearson was shot in the arm and chest about 6:15 p.m. Friday in the 2200 block of East 71st Street. He was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital at 6:59 p.m. Friday, according to DNAinfo Chicago.

Shortly after the shooting that killed Pearson, 21-year-old Brenden Temple was shot multiple times in the head in the 6600 block of South Honore Street in the city's West Englewood neighborhood. Temple was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital at 7:18 p.m. Friday.

Later Friday, a 37-year-old man who has not been identified as of Saturday morning was fatally shot in an alley about 11:10 p.m. in Englewood, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

About 3 a.m. Saturday, 22-year-old Jamal Coleman was shot multiple times in the leg in the 1200 block of West Washburne Avenue and taken to Stroger Hospital, according to the Sun-Times. He was pronounced dead there at 3:22 a.m.

About an hour later, around 4 a.m., a 41-year-old man was shot in the abdomen in the 0-100 block of East Chestnut Street in the city's Gold Coast neighborhood during an apparent argument over a parking spot, according to NBC Chicago. The victim was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious condition.

At least two other men -- ages 18 and 30 -- were wounded in separate non-fatal shootings in the city's West Pullman and Lawndale neighborhoods early Saturday.

    Can CrossFit Improve Running?

As of today, I have finished many half-marathons and trail half-marathons, climbed mountains and ran a marathon, and I'm currently training for another marathon and various obstacle races. What made this possible? CrossFit.

Before you click away, hear me out. I'm not going to try to sell everyone on CrossFit because it doesn't work for everyone. I am going to share why it works for me. In the three years I've been combining running with CrossFit, I have not had one injury. My previous injury was a severe case of ITBS, or illiotibial band syndrome, which led to hip problems. I went from crying tears of relief over three miles to more tears crossing a finish line at 26.2 miles. So what is so magical about CrossFit?

    1. CrossFit is serious cross-training. CrossFit is based around improving 10 basic physical skills: cardiovascular and respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance and accuracy. Participants work to improve these skills through weight-lifting, gymnastics and metabolic conditioning. Good trainers spend a great deal of time each week making sure the workouts for the next week are balanced in all of these things. Looking through that list of 10 skills, which ones do not improve running?

    2. CrossFit incorporates functional flexibility. The age-old question: Should I stretch before or after running? That has nothing to do with CrossFit's flexibility training, which is actually mobility training. The iron-rod backbone of all CrossFit is functional fitness, and that includes skill work designed to improve range of motion for functional behaviors. In my own experience, this has been crucial to my running success. Oh, and to answer the question, I do not advise static stretching before a run. Stretching ligaments, tendons and muscles before loading them with repetitive weight-bearing impact movement is not a good idea. Dynamic stretching is a better option. Again, this is just my personal experience.

    3. CrossFit demands mental stamina. This is what allowed me to finish a marathon without hitting a huge wall. Yes, most CrossFit workouts are less than 30 minutes. Include 3 to 4 CrossFit workouts a week, and the mental discipline has nowhere to go but up. All runners know that mental stamina can be the difference between a DNF and a triumphant finish.

Hillary Clinton Supports Obama's Call To Congress To Approve Military Action In Syria

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is backing President Barack Obama's call for Congress to approve military action in Syria, Politico reports.

“Secretary Clinton supports the President's effort to enlist the Congress in pursuing a strong and targeted response to the Assad regime’s horrific use of chemical weapons,” a Clinton aide told Politico.

On Saturday, Obama announced he feels action in Syria is warranted but said he had decided to ask Congress to support a strike punishing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime for the alleged use of chemical weapons.

Clinton isn't the only one backing Obama's moves on Syria. House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) both said Tuesday they would back the president's call to use military force against Syria.

Watch As Nicole Richie Tries To Rap

Nicole Richie is apparently bored, so she decided to turn her passion for rap music into a hobby. The star of "Candidly Nicole" hit the studio with upcoming rapper Ebone to record a verse about what it's like to get your hair done. Some might say she's just as good as Macklemore! Watch the clip, which is unfortunately subtitled when Ebone speaks, despite the fact that he's not only conversing in English, but also educating Nicole.

    Baby Gorilla Befriends Little Girl

This little girl and baby gorilla friendship is just too adorable, especially since the two new besties are just about the same size.

Watch her mimic the gorilla's movements, making him -- (we're assuming it's a he) -- so happy that he asks for a kiss.

We don’t know much about this video of a baby gorilla and young girl making friends at a zoo, but we do know it’s adorable.

The two are mimicking each other’s movements, a sign of empathy. They even share a kiss through the glass.

it was uploaded on Aug 20 by Petsami, though we aren’t sure if it was uploaded elsewhere first.

Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone-starrer Chennai Express is chugging on with immense steam at the box office. The film recorded an opening day collection of Rs33.12 crore, say trade experts, and it is expected to do well across national and international quarters over the weekend.

Heavy promotions for the Rohit Shetty directorial, coupled with a release on an auspicious occasion like Eid-ul-Fitr Friday, seem to have paid off. Even before the release, the buzz for the movie was strong, giving it a collection of Rs. 6.75 crore in the home country from paid previews on Thursday itself.

"We've received an overwhelming response from all quarters and the film is being loved by everyone," Gaurav Verma, director — India theatrical distribution, Studios, Disney UTV.

"Though Chennai Express is playing in highest number of screens for any film, we still ran out of capacity in most locations due to this huge demand at the box office and the film is on its way to create new benchmarks," added Verma.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh shared that the collective figures minted by the movie on Thursday and Friday in India amounted to Rs39.87 crore nett.

Said to have been made at a budget of Rs. 70 crore, Chennai Express had a grand release in over 3,500 screens in the country and 700 screens abroad.

The advance bookings for the film were strong, said Girish Wankhede of Cinemax chain.

"It's doing very well. On Thursday, there were 80 to 90 percent occupancy of seats. Advance booking was strong for this weekend. It will do very well in coming weeks also," Wankhede said.

Down south also, the movie has received a good response.

Trade analyst Trinath shared: "This is probably the best ever opening for a SRK film in the state. Even though people voiced about the stereotyping in Chennai Express, none had any issues with it and embraced it with a smile."

In the film, Shah Rukh plays a north Indian, who falls in love with a Tamil girl, essayed by his Om Shanti Om co-star Deepika.

The number of shows were doubled in Chennai for Chennai Express as Tamil movie Thalaivaa didn't release there.

"Since Thalaivaa didn't release, the number of shows for Chennai Express were doubled (on Friday). We had about 95 percent occupancy for the paid previews and most shows over the weekend are booked," a multiplex representative in Chennai, said.

Mumbai-based trade analyst Komal Nahta didn't find the film as entertaining as Shetty's previous films like the Golmaal series, but he didn't deny that the movie indeed got a "fantastic start" in India.

Internationally too, the film is said to be doing well.

In the Gulf region, it released Thursday and minted $435,000, with 28 screens yet to report. But it is estimated to cross $550,000 by the time all screens report, said a source.

In Singapore, two screens are yet to report, but it made $95,359 on Thursday.

Chennai Express, an action comedy, had only night show previews in Britain Thursday, numbers are 142,220 pounds with three sites yet to report.

In Australia, the paid previews Thursday amounted to $34,314, while in New Zealand, the figures came to $6,431.

Officials at UTV Motion Pictures, which has co-produced the potboiler with Shah Rukh's Red Chillies Entertainment, are happy.
