Apple Fined $2,855 By South Korea Over Location Data: "

The fine, though small, marks the first time Apple has been punished by a regulator over the controversial location data collection which has sparked criticism in the United States and elsewhere.

The revelation in April that Apple’s iPhones collected location data and stored it for up to a year — even when location software was supposedly turned off — has prompted renewed scrutiny of the nexus between location and privacy.

Apple has since issued a patch to fix the problem.

Some 27,800 South Korean iPhone and iPad users are planning to launch a class action suit against Apple over the matter, while two separate U.S. groups have sued Apple, alleging that certain software applications were passing personal user information to third-party advertisers without consent.

The Korea Communications Commission (KCC) ordered corrective measures on the South Korean operations of Apple and Google Inc, saying it has found loopholes in systems supposed to protect location information. It ordered the technology giants to encrypt location data stored in smartphones.



Apple Korea could have had its business suspended or been fined 3 percent of its location information revenue for failing to encrypt location data, or been fined up to 10 million won for collecting data without permission, the KCC said.

“Apple is not tracking the location of your iPhone. Apple has never done so and has no plans to ever do so,” said Steve Park, a spokesman for Apple Korea.

Google Inc, a fierce competitor of Apple in mobile computing, has also faced criticism over reports that Android-based phones track the locations of users.

Google said that location-sharing on its Android mobile platform was strictly opt-in.

Montag, who estimates that she spent $2million on an ill-fated pop career, also revealed that she regretted her infamous decision to have ten plastic surgery procedures in one day. Pratt is saddled with a wardrobe worth a cool $1million. Having become used to dining at some of the most exclusive restaurants in Hollywood, the couple now spend their time holed up in a house in Santa Barbara, eating Mexican food.Montag became famous in 2006 as Lauren Conrad’s sidekick in the MTV reality series, The Hills. Pratt joined the show in season two, winning Montag’s heart, but driving a wedge between her and Conrad. By season six, however, the show’s ratings had dropped and Pratt was banned after a highly publicised fight with one of the show’s producers.According to Pratt, the bust-up occurred when the show’s producers encouraged him to be violent towards his sister and co-star Stephanie Pratt.


“That’s when I snapped,” Pratt told the Daily Beast. “To the point when I said – and this is when the producers got scared of me – ‘You want me to punch my sister in the face? Are you trying to get me to kill you?’ I didn’t say, ‘I’m killing you.’ If I did, MTV would have had me arrested.”

A British student has been found dead on a railway embankment after worried relatives reported her missing in Krakow, Poland.Kate Zaks, 21, was on a temporary work placement in Poland working as an intern in an art gallery as part of her history studies. Her family whom she was staying with raised the alarm after she failed to return to her apartment on Friday night.

The local authorities had already begun a search for the 21 year old girl when a passenger on a train contacted them after spotting a body on an embankment near to where she lived. It was later confirmed to be the body of Kate Zaks.


Police believe that the cause of death relates to the severe head injuries she sustained which appears to be a result of being struck several times with a blunt object.

A spokeswoman for the Krakow police has confirmed the victim had told her family she was meeting someone on the night she was killed. They questioned a 30 year old man, however he was released after they established he was not involved.

Her family have been informed and have flown out to Krakow to meet with the authorities. The foreign office has also been informed of the death and is in contact with the local police who are heading up the investigation.

Like many of you, we heard the sad news about Amy Winehouse's death on Facebook. The news spread quickly. Her friend Russell Brand immediately issued an incredible tribute to her, which was one of the most widely discussed responses to her sudden death. Most people immediately assumed that a drug overdose must have taken Amy's life. We don't know how she died, and on some level, it doesn't really matter. She was young, talented and apparently haunted with struggles none of us will ever understand. She used drugs. And now she's gone.

We have worked at the Drug Policy Alliance for many years and spend most days thinking about drugs, our country's drug policies and the people whose lives are impacted by them. We spend most days advocating for, and trying to help, people just like Amy. Here are some of our reflections on the tragic death of Amy Winehouse.

Relapse Happens.

Abstinence isn't always achievable for everyone. We know some people will fall short of this goal, despite everyone wanting to see them succeed. Even people with virtually unlimited resources and support, like Amy Winehouse, will sometimes fail to live up to their own hopes for sobriety. We need as many potential solutions on the table as possible, including things that reduce the risks of accidental fatal overdose, like the overdose reversal medication naloxone and physician-monitored prescribed heroin maintenance programs. Amy's drug use and struggles with addiction have been in the news for years. She was in treatment as recently as May. Unfortunately, treatment is not a silver bullet and relapse is a common, and frustrating, part of recovery.

There's an Overdose Crisis in the United States and Abroad.

People usually hear about overdose when it happens to a celebrity like Heath Ledger or Chris Farley. Yet overdose is a silent killer that has quickly become one of the leading causes of accidental death in the United States. Nationally, over 27,000 people died from accidental overdoses in 2007 (the most recent data available). In NY and 16 other states, overdose is now the leading cause of accidental death, even passing car fatalities. More Americans now die from an accidental drug overdose than from HIV/AIDS.

That's the bad news. The good news is that most drug overdoses are preventable. Solutions to the crisis exist; cost-neutral and cost-effective measures such as Good Samaritan 911 laws and expanded access to the lifesaving overdose reversal medication naloxone help reduce overdose deaths.

Just last week, Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York signed a Good Samaritan 911 bill that will save thousands of lives. The bill will help reduce overdose death by allowing people who are witnessing an overdose to call 911 without fear of being prosecuted. New York now joins states like New Mexico and Washington in passing these laws, but we need these laws in every state.

People Need Better Access to Effective Treatment

We need to invest in better and more widely available drug treatment. Many people would be shocked to discover that there's virtually nowhere left in the United States where a person addicted to heroin can call and be admitted that same day to a long-term in-patient drug treatment program free of charge. We need to eliminate these barriers to addiction treatment.

Jake Gyllenhaal had a little fun in the sun with his sister, Maggie Gyllenhaal, earlier this week.
The Gyllenhaals were in Hawaii for their father's wedding but the two were able to get in a some sibling-time on the North Shore in Oahu.
Both brother and sister looked great in their sexy beach attire. Jake has been prepping for an upcoming role as a police officer in "End of Watch."
And by the looks of his ripped physique, he's going to put on quite a show. Maggie, very fit herself, opted for an elegant, strapless one piece.
