  • Syrian Army Attacks Village Near Turkish Border

Syrian troops backed by tanks and firing heavy machine guns swept into a village near the Turkish border Saturday, cutting food supplies for nearly 2,000 refugees who have so far refused to leave their country. Many of those men, women and children will have no choice but to flee across the frontier if troops descend on them.
The Local Coordination Committees, a group that documents anti-government protests, said troops backed by six tanks and several armored personnel carriers, entered Bdama in the morning. The village, about 12 miles (20 kilometers) from the Turkish border, had a bakery that was the sole source of bread to the refugees crowded near the Turkish border. The town was also supplying medicine and other foodstuffs to the 2,000 Syrians who had hoped not to have to flee to the Turkish tent-city sanctuary.
"We still have some potatoes, rice and powder milk but they will run out soon," said Jamil Saeb, one of the Syrians who had so far decided to stay in Syria. "This is our first day without bread."
Saeb said there are children who are sick and there is no medicine. Others are picking apples for lack of other food.
"we are living in catastrophic conditions," he said. Some women and children were already crossing into Turkey Saturday afternoon.
"We are besieged by the border fence from one side and the Syrian army from the other," Saeb said by telephone. "We are expecting a humanitarian crisis within hours if Turkey does not send aid to us."
The British Foreign office, meanwhile, urged Britons in Syria to leave the country "immediately." In a statement posted on the website of the British Embassy in Syria, the Foreign Office said Britons should leave "now by commercial means while these are still operating."
The statement said those who stay should understand it would be unlikely the British Embassy in Damascus could provide a normal consular service if there was a "further breakdown in law and order."
Britain, France, Germany and Portugal will be sponsoring a draft resolution at the U.N. Security Council to condemn Syria.

Tom Cruise In 'Rock Of Ages': Stacee Jaxx First Picture

Tom Cruise became a veritable film superstar by the end of the end of the 1980s. In this first look at his new film, we get a glimpse of what he may have been had he chosen music over acting.

Cruise's team tweeted an image of the star as Stacee Jaxx, the 80s rockstar lead of the big screen adaptation of the Broadway show, "Rock of Ages." Cruise plays the womanizing hair metal star, complete with an impressive physique and era-accurate tattoos.

He's joined in the film by a star studded cast put together by director Adam Shankman. Malin Ackerman recently joined as a naive journalist who falls for Jaxx, finishing up a cast that owns the A-list. Russell Brand will take on the role of a venue owner and sing an REO Speedwagon song with Alec Baldwin, who will play Dennis Dupree, a washed up musician and club owner. Julianne Hough is the young, naive singer new to LA, while Bryan Cranston will play the mayor of the city; Catherine Zeta-Jones plays a conservative out to destroy rock; and Mary J. Blige will also be in the film.

Cruise has been working hard at his singing, Shankman said, to give the movie as authentic a feel as possible.

"It wasn't until our first go around with his voice lesson that we sort of looked at each other and went, 'This is gonna work!'" he told Entertainment Weekly. "And we were basically dancing around the living room and high-fiving each other because he actually has a fantastic voice. His grandfather or his great-grandfather was an opera singer, so apparently he's genetically predisposed for this sort of thing."

Baldwin has been tweeting from the set of the film, writing, "There are some things that are happening on this movie that are going to BLOW... YOU...AWAY," and "I was off work today and went to watch TC shoot. He killed it. I mean, it was beyond great."

Lady Gaga Goes Bald For 'Hair' Performance On Paul O'Grady Show

With the caveat that Lady Gaga is an entire context unto herself, there's something more simple and streamlined about the pop superstar these days, making her more approachable, and sometimes, even relatable. Of course, wearing dresses made of Kermit the Frogs and meat set a high, nearly unsustainable bar for abstract weirdness, but still, for the most part, it does seems that there is something more human about the Fame Monster.
Aside from her adventure in church-bating Catholic imagery, in which she cast herself as a lover of Judas, both Gaga's music and message have cast her in a more gentle light. Simpler dance beats to her singles and a new, straight-played video for her song "Edge of Glory," mark her artistic statements, while her public statements have put her even further into the mainstream, arena as a lover of all souls.
With her "Born This Way" single and publicity campaign, Gaga has signaled again that she seeks to win, for herself and every other misunderstood soul, a normal, accepted human existence, regardless of gender or creed or, especially, sexuality. Her passionate speeches for LGBT rights, as well as her non-stop inspirational tweets, place her at least in the close exurbs of the mainstream, stripped bare of at least some of her eccentricities in favor of sincerity.
In that vein of stripping down from pretense to prove that she's human, Lady Gaga went bald in a "Paul O'Grady Show" performance for her stripped down new song, "Hair." Perhaps it is only a fashion statement, but given the song title, it's unlikely, as she filled her piano top with wigs and took her own piece off halfway through. Perhaps she's saying something about shedding that skin, that costume, that barrier that she created with all of her vaunted costumes -- at least so that people know what she is inside before putting it back on.
The lyrics provide hints about that struggle; it seems that she's trying to prove that her hair, her costumes, her persona are normal. So by taking it off, showing the world her insides, she's proving her mainstream credentials, while still maintaing her built up image.

Hugh Hefner Slaps Crystal Harris Playboy Cover With Scarlet Letter

Not so fast almost Mrs. Hefner. After Crystal Harris landed the cover of July's Playboy but lost her fiancé, Hugh Hefner, practically at the altar, the original Playboy isn't about to let her get away with it.

"Recent events call for a special sticker on the July cover. Look for it on newsstands," Hefner tweeted along with a shot of the new cover -- a large red sticker that reads, "Runaway Bride In This Issue" is plastered over his ex-fiancée.

Early Wednesday morning, Harris told her side of the story on Ryan Seacrest's radio show, much to the amusement of Hefner who would rather keep his musings to 140 characters or less.

"Crystal did an interview with Ryan Seacrest this morning to explain everything, but I still don't have a clue," he tweeted.
In the playfully bitter post-breakup war between Harris and Hefner, we definitely give the Lothario a few bonus points for this one.

U.N. Gay Rights Protection Resolution Passes, Hailed As 'Historic Moment'

The United Nations endorsed the rights of gay, lesbian and transgender people for the first time ever Friday, passing a resolution hailed as historic by the U.S. and other backers and decried by some African and Muslim countries. The declaration was cautiously worded, expressing "grave concern" about abuses because of sexual orientation and commissioning a global report on discrimination against gays.
But activists called it an important shift on an issue that has divided the global body for decades, and they credited the Obama administration's push for gay rights at home and abroad.
"This represents a historic moment to highlight the human rights abuses and violations that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people face around the world based solely on who they are and whom they love," U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said in a statement.
Following tense negotiations, members of the Geneva-based U.N. Human Rights Council narrowly voted in favor of the declaration put forward by South Africa, with 23 votes in favor and 19 against.
Backers included the U.S., the European Union, Brazil and other Latin American countries. Those against included Russia, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria and Pakistan. China, Burkina Faso and Zambia abstained, Kyrgyzstan didn't vote and Libya was suspended from the rights body earlier.
The resolution expressed "grave concern at acts of violence and discrimination, in all regions of the world, committed against individuals because of their sexual orientation and gender identity."
More important, activists said, it also established a formal U.N. process to document human rights abuses against gays, including discriminatory laws and acts of violence. According to Amnesty International, consensual same-sex relations are illegal in 76 countries worldwide, while harassment and discrimination are common in many more.
"Today's resolution breaks the silence that has been maintained for far too long," said John Fisher of the gay rights advocacy group ARC International.

Japan's Tsunami Stranded Ships Being Returned To The Sea

More than a dozen ships heaved inland by Japan's tsunami in March sit with red bellies and propellers exposed among the demolished houses of this once-bustling fishing town, a jarring daily reminder of the ocean's awesome power.
The enormous task and cost of moving these out-of-place vessels – and the debris around them – has kept them stranded in Kesennuma for over three months. Many have been propped up with metal beams so they won't topple over.
Determined to recover, the town has now begun the Herculean job of returning some of the beached ships to the sea. Several ship owners banded together to jointly negotiate a cost with a logistics company to move five of the vessels in a deal that insurers have agreed to cover.
Even after the group rate, the amount per ship is more than $1 million.
But putting these vessel back into action is crucial to restarting Kesennuma's fish markets and restoring the community's economy and confidence.
"This is a fishing town, so if the ships get moving and start catching fish again, we're hopeful that might lead to things picking up here," said Keiko Onodera, 67, whose hillside house overlooking the port survived tsunami waters that reached her front steps.
All told, authorities estimate that the tsunami swept 17 ships weighing over 20 tons and another 1,000 smaller fishing boats onto land around town. Some of the bigger ships farther from the port will be cut into scrap metal, but vessels closer to the water and with modest damage are being rescued.
This week, two towering cranes hoisted the 400-ton Akane Maru No. 1, a deep-sea salmon and saury fishing boat, about 10 meters (30 feet) off the ground from where it had been tossed by the wave 100 meters (yards) from the water.
The cranes gently lowered the ship onto a huge trolley of modular segments in primary colors that looks like a super-sized Lego creation. It was the start of what would be a three-day operation organized by Penta-Ocean Construction Co.
