  • Kristin Cavallari Accepts Marine Corps Ball Twitter Invitation

Another celebrity is headed to a Marine Corps Ball! Following in the footsteps of Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake, former “Hills” star Kristin Cavallari has accepted an invitation to attend a Marine Corps Ball in San Diego.
U.S. Marine Jonathan Burkett tweeted the invitation to Cavallari August 25 for the November 17 event.
“Wanted to know if you want to go the the Marine Corps Ball with me in San Diego?! Would make a video but still deployed!” he wrote, adding, “Could have your friends come too and all go out in San Diego. Figured it would be a good time and its close by!”
Much to his surprise, newly-single Cavallari accepted, replying, “Would love to! When is it?”
According to TMZ, Cavallari’s managers are working to make the date happen.
However, if the reports about her joining the cast of “Dancing With The Stars” are true, her schedule might be a little busy later this fall.

‘Win Win’ Takes Thomas McCarthy Back Home

‘Win Win’ Takes Thomas McCarthy Back Home:
The dream, as it is usually imagined and, in rare cases realized, is to leave behind the small town and shine in the bright lights of Hollywood. Turning that formula around, Thomas McCarthy proved that you can go home again — and in doing so, achieved his greatest success to date with the Paul Giamatti-starring hit film “Win Win.”
The film’s genesis, McCarthy, an actor/writer/director perhaps most instantly recognizable as Dr. Bob from the “Meet the Parents” films, explained, was trading emails with his childhood friend Joe Tiboni. He was at that point practicing as a lawyer for the elderly in their hometown of New Providence, New Jersey, but McCarthy had been encouraging high school wrestling buddy to turn the funny stories he had been relaying into screenwriting form.
“I’ve known Joe since I was 13 and I never anticipated that from Joe I’d get material that I’d say, ‘god this guy is good,’ but he was,” McCarthy remembered in a conversation with The Huffington Post. “And when I had this idea, it was really just kind of a whim on first, but I said why don’t you develop this with me. And he jumped at it, to his credit. Most people wouldn’t, they’d be like no I’ve got a practice and a family and I live here, but he was like hey, I’m game, he’s just that kind of guy. And really that sort of spur of the moment decision made a lot of sense suddenly.”

From there, long walks in the park where they played as kids took a small concept and turned it into a full blown idea, set in the most obvious of places. The film would eventually become the story of a New Providence elderly lawyer and coach of his town’s pathetic high school wrestling team. Familiar, indeed.
“It wasn’t something I ever thought, I can’t wait to go back and make a movie in New Providence,” McCarthy explained. “The kernel of the idea was high school wrestling and then it obviously quickly grew beyond that, but probably half way through that process I was like I know this town, it might be a really interesting experiment to go back and if not actually shoot it, which was my original intention, but at least try to capture that.”
Because of tax reasons, the actual filming actually took place in Long Island, with the production manager for the film presenting a real enough substitute to satisfy McCarthy’s desire for accuracy.
“Those commuter communities are all so similar, I felt like I could tell you where the pizza place was and where the high school was,” he laughed. “The way that translates I think, I was pretty happy with that in terms of the production value.”
The film — a warm dramedy with earnest characters and honest dialog — isn’t totally biographical; Mike Flaherty, the fictional lawyer, played by Paul Giamatti, creates complication by fraudulently placing the client in a nursing home, pocketing money intended for the client out of financial desperation. He then takes in the client’s homeless grandson, who turns out to be an inexplicably prodigy-level wrestling talent played by newcomer Alex Shaffer. Tiboni, so far as the public knows, did not take in a semi-orphaned student or cheat a senior citizen out of money. However, given the basic framework he provided for the character, in a way, the story was about him, with Giamatti using him for some inspiration.

Eva Longoria’s Post-’Desperate Housewives’ Career: Four New Projects

Eva Longoria’s Post-’Desperate Housewives’ Career: Four New Projects:
t’s the role that launched her star, but with the show coming to a close, Eva Longoria is very ready to move out of her life as a Housewife.
Variety reports on four new projects that Longoria will take on after she wraps the final season of “Desperate Housewives,” including a number of edgy roles — which, perhaps unsurprisingly given the show’s subject matter, tackle domestic dystopia.
Longoria, to start, will feature in the indie drama “Long Time Gone,” as the woman with whom Meg Ryan’s husband cheats with and eventually leaves her for. Then, she’ll do another indie film, this time in “Who Gets The Dog,” a flick about a couple breaking up and fighting over custody over their dog.
The actress just starred in the small indie “Without Men,” about a Latin American village that sees all of its men forcibly recruited by guerilla forces and taken away, leaving her to become the de facto leader of the village.

She’ll next appear on the big screen in the upcoming drama, “Cristiada,” about the Mexican Cristero War, and then the dark comedy, “The Baytown Disco,” in which she plays a woman who convinces three less-than-intelligent men to rescue her from whom she calls an abusive husband.

Hells Angels Serve Amazon.com & Wildfox With Lawsuit

Hells Angels Serve Amazon.com & Wildfox With Lawsuit:

We love a good retail lawsuit, which is good because it seems like there’s a new on everyday.

This week everyone was talking about the Hells Angels, which hit Amazon.com and L.A. brand Wildfox with lawsuits for wrongfully using its name.

The Los Angeles Times reported that the storied motorcycle gang brought the suit over t-shirts that read, “My boyfriend’s a Hells Angel” and featured the signature Hells Angles wings on the back.

“We bring these lawsuits from time to time not just to punish but to educate,” Hells Angels’ attorney Fritz Clapp told the Los Angeles Times. “Somebody thought erroneously that Hells Angels is a generic term.”

Just because Hells Angels get in bar brawls and run from the law doesn’t mean they can’t be sensitive about you using their name.

This isn’t the first lawsuit over use of the iconic group name. Saks Fifth Avenue and Zappos have both been served with suits over using the Hells Angel name or emblems and even Alexander McQueen got into trouble for several items.

Trying to take a little of that hardcore biker cred for oneself, apparently, does not fly with the Hells Angels.

Which is fine by us. We’re not sure we would have bought that t-shirt anyway…

Hurricane Irene Hits North Carolina, Claims First Two Lives

Hurricane Irene Hits North Carolina, Claims First Two Lives:

Defense Secretary Panetta has issued a prepare-to-deploy order for 6,500 active duty troops from all the services to support hurricane relief efforts if necessary. Eastern North Carolina has already seen three tornadoes in the past few days, and the majority of the state and areas of Maryland and Virginia are under tornado watches through Sunday.

Stacy Township, on the coast of North Carolina, was battered with 93 mph wind gusts this morning, and winds up to 115 mph have been reported in parts of eastern North Carolina.

The far end of the fishing pier in Atlantic Beach, N.C., collapsed overnight. Though much of the 100-foot long pier is still standing, but its end has disappeared into the ocean.

Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds, in the outer banks of North Carolina, are experiencing the worst flooding, according to multiple reports. Flash flood warnings across eastern North Carolina and eastern Virginia over the next several hours.

Nearly 200,000 homes in North Carolina are experiencing power outages, according to Power Energy. Winds up to 85 mph ripped power lines from their poles, causing many of the shortages. The hardest hit areas were Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach, N.C.

“Our crews are restoring service as quickly as possible, where it is safe to do so,” Power Energy tweeted.

ASUS MARS II gets reviewed, deemed the fastest single graphics card on the market

ASUS MARS II gets reviewed, deemed the fastest single graphics card on the market:

Well, that insane ASUS MARS II card we got to feast our eyes on back in June has finally started rolling off the assembly line. That means it’s time for the hardware fanatics and gaming freaks to start putting them through their paces. HotHardware said the dual GTX 580-packing card was “quite simply the fastest single graphics card we have ever tested, bar none.” And everyone else seemed to agree. Now, obviously there are drawbacks — the 3GB card is an absolute power hog (requiring 600-watts all by itself) and insanely pricey at $ 1,499. You could even buy three separate GTX 580 cards for slightly less, use the same number of slots and get better performance, but the MARS II has one other thing going for it — status. Only 999 of these beasts will be made. After they’re all snatched up you’ll have to head to eBay, and pay a hefty premium over it’s already absurd price. But, if you absolutely have to have the best performance you can out of a single card solution, this is the clear choice. If you need more detail about just how badly this spanks the competition check out the reviews below.

Dhanush’s ‘Mappillai’ Producer files fresh case on Sun Pictures:

Chennai city police have slapped another fresh case against the COO of Sun Pictures W Hansraj Saxena, based on the complaint of a film producer Nemichand Jhabak, who produced the movie ‘Mappillai’ starring Dhanush and Hansika Motwani. This is the third case registered against the Saxena in the past one week.

Dhanushs Mappillai Producer files fresh case on Sun Pictures

According to Jhabak, he sold the film rights to Sun Pictures for Rs 17 crore in 2010. Though, he got the money from Sun Pictures, subsequently he was intimidated by Saxena and a portion of the money was extorted from him. Police said, Sun Pictures COO Saxena had approached Jhabak and struck a deal to give the rights of the movie to Sun Pictures. Jhabak demanded Rs 17 crore for giving the film rights to Sun Pictures. As per the deal, Sun Pictures gave him the money. Subsequently, he was threatened with dire consequences and Sun Pictures got back the money Rs 3.37 crore forcefully from Jhabak citing that the film didn’t go well as expected in the state.

In his four page complaint submitted before the inspector of police, Kodambakkam, he claimed that he didn’t know the ways to complaint against Sun Pictures at that time. Now, he has approached the police, as things have been changed, he claimed.

Based on Jhabak’s complaint, Kodambakkam police have registered a case against Saxena under Sections 386 (extortion by putting a person in fear of death), 420 (cheating), 406 (punishment for cheating) and 506 (ii) (criminal intimidation) of Indian Penal Code.

“We will approach the magistrate court concerned to issue necessary orders to arrest Saxena in the new case. Then, Saxena will be produced before the magistrate court and will be informed about his arrest in the fresh case. Saxena will be remanded for 15 days in the fresh case too,” a police officer said.

Saxena was first arrested by the KK Nagar police, based on the complaint of a film distributor TS Selvaraj for cheating the amount Rs 82.53 lakh for the release of the Tamil movie ‘Theeratha Vilayattu Pillai’. Subsequently, Saxena’s associate Ayyappan was also arrested in this case. KK Nagar police slapped another fresh case against Saxena, based on Shanmugavelu’s complaint. Shanmugavelu got the film distribution rights for the movie ‘Theeratha Vilayattu Pillai’ and later he withdrew to distribute the movie in Salem area. He was allegedly threatened and forced to give Rs 45 lakh to Saxena.

Halo’s 10th anniversary marked with new maps and 3D content

Halo’s 10th anniversary marked with new maps and 3D content:

The 10th anniversary of iconic Microsoft Xbox 360 video game Halo will be marked by the announcement of three new multiplayer maps and 3D functionality for Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, details of the upcoming Halo: Reach title and a cameo of the Halo 4 Warthog in the upcoming Forza Motorsport 4 Autovista experience.

343 Industries announced at Halo Fest two stunningly re-imagined battlefields and a brand new Firefight map for “Halo: Anniversary”: Timberland, Prisoner and Installation 04.

Also for the first time, fans will be able to experience the original “Halo” campaign in a whole new dimension as they step onto the legendary ring world in stereoscopic 3D.

Using a custom made top-and-bottom 3D technology, 3D-TV owning fans will be able to experience the amazingly remastered “Halo: Anniversary” in a more immersive experience than ever before. Attendees can see this first at the immersive LG Cinema 3D Experience at Halo Fest.

    Upcoming “Halo: Reach” title update

The team at 343i has been hard at work on an update for “Halo: Reach” both to bring new experiences to fans as well as address longstanding feedback from the community.

The most noticeable change in the works? The return of the wicked, deadly and wildly fun “Halo: Combat Evolved” Magnum pistol to “Halo: Anniversary” and “Halo: Reach” multiplayer gameplay. An addition that will be supported in special, classic playlists, the original Magnum pistol is sure to rekindle some of the madness and carnage players reveled in a decade ago.

In addition, the update, which is targeted for release in October, will introduce several multiplayer fixes for “Halo: Reach” fans have been clamoring for.

Armor Lock now absorbs a level of damage based on the amount of remaining energy a player has, diminishing its effectiveness.

Active Camo’s duration has been reduced and the ability to block sword attacks using any weapon other than another sword has been disabled. And for fans of precision firing, reticle “bloom” is now configurable, delivering increased accuracy when firing in rapid succession.

This update will also enable “Halo: Reach” players using an Xbox 360 4GB console without a HDD to utilise Campaign and Firefight matchmaking which previously required a HDD.

Beyonce Pregnant: ‘A Star Is Born’ Delayed By Clint Eastwood

Beyonce Pregnant: ‘A Star Is Born’ Delayed By Clint Eastwood:
Beyonce’s pregnancy, announced Sunday night at the MTV Video Music Awards, may push back shooting on her next film. The irony? She’s due to star in a remake of the film, “A Star Is Born.”
In January, the Golden Globe-nominee was cast in Clint Eastwood’s telling of the story of a young singer who falls in love with a spiraling, fading rock star. Filming on the pic according to Deadline, was due to begin in February. That won’t happen, the site reports, quoting an insider’s relaying that Eastwood has agreed to delay rolling until the baby is delivered and the singer is back to full strength.
The film still does not have a leading man, as Eastwood’s “J. Edgar” star Leonardo DiCaprio declined to take on the role of the alcoholic musician.
This will be the fourth version of the film; previously, versions were produced starring Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson 1976, Judy Garland and James Mason in 1954 and Janet Gaynor and Fredric March in 1937.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 for IFA 2011 in a Bit More Detail

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 for IFA 2011 in a Bit More Detail:
The team at Samsung blew the top off of the Android world back in November of 2010 when the released the first real Android tablet effort across the world – what the tech world’s next big convention IFA 2011 may hold is the next generation of this very model with an added 0.7-inches and a Super AMOLED display. As we know from leaked details contained in Samsung’s own official “Unpacked” app for IFA in Berlin, they certainly will be releasing what’s called the Galaxy Tab 7.7. Aside a “Galaxy Note” device that’ll likely have something to do with a stylus for mobile devices and the “Wave 3,” a Bada device with a 4-inch Super AMOLED display,, the Galaxy Tab 7.7 would be the second reported upgrade to a device already out on the market with slightly lesser specifications.
What we can expect from the Galaxy Tab 7.7 was revealed earlier this month on August 11th where we got our hands on a leaked roadmap of Samsung devices which also let us in on possible specs for the first Ice Cream Sandwich device, the Nexus Prime (though we don’t call it that in the roadmap article, learn about how it was confirmed twice just yesterday on our sister site Android Community.) What this leaked roadmap tells us is that the tablet will be the next Android tablet in line to run Google’s official tablet-ready mobile OS Android 3.x Honeycomb.
In addition, this same roadmap lets us in on the idea that this tablet will come in two versions: P6200 and P6210 (or P6100), the latter being a Wi-Fi only device while the former will be an HSPA+ device (we’re hoping for the 4G LTE version sooner than later, if you know what I mean.) Next we believe this tablet will have a 3 megapixel camera on the back, a 2 megapixel camera on the front, and will have a rather impressive display to tote along.
Possible Galaxy Tab 7.7 Refresh for IFA 2011 via DroidLife

Note that the photos above (at least one of them) have the Android menu row of soft keys, this indicating that the device will not be running Android 3.x Honeycomb.

Now here’s where it gets a bit more interesting: this device is said to have a 1024 x 600 pixel display – that’s all well and good on it’s own – but what we MAY be looking at here is a massively impressive (compared to current tablet-sized displays) Super AMOLED screen. Though back on the 12th of August the folks at Samsung insisted that the roadmap and some other details of future devices seen on several blogs were not accurate, we’ve got to keep considering what was noted:
Some media have been reporting that Samsung is preparing to launch nine new smartphones and two new tablet devices. While Samsung is continuously working on new devices for our customers, the details being cited are not accurate in this case.
We appreciate the interest in our upcoming mobile devices and will share more information once its available.
Prototype 7-inch Super AMOLED Samsung Mobile Display at FPD 2010
Beyond (or perhaps in spite of) Samsung’s words here, details on a 7-inch Super AMOLED display have been popping up since November of 2010. Inside that month we got to see a lovely glance at an early vision of a 7-inch Super AMOLED Galaxy Tab-style display. On the other hand, on May 2nd, 2011, we were again told by Samsung that there’d be no Super AMOLED tablets inside 2011. We shall see!

First Look At Justin Timberlake & Amanda Seyfried In ‘In Time’ Arrives Right On Schedule

First Look At Justin Timberlake & Amanda Seyfried In ‘In Time’ Arrives Right On Schedule:
Formerly titled “I’m.mortal” then “Now” before settling on “In Time,” director Andrew Niccol has stepped behind the camera again for the time in six years, returning to the sci-fi genre that served him so well the first time out with “Gattaca.” And he’s got a helluva story to tell.
Starring Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried, Olivia Wilde, Cillian Murphy, Vincent Kartheiser and Collins Pennie, the film is set in a world where time has become a currency with the rich achieving immortality and never aging past 25. Accused of murder, Will Salas (Timberlake) has to go on the run and takes a hostage (Seyfried) with him until he can figure out how to clear his name, all while trying to bank the minutes he needs to stay alive. In an interesting twist, Wilde will play Will’s mother despite being four years younger than Timberlake (remember, no one ages past 25) with Kartheiser playing Seyfried’s Dad. Meanwhile, Murphy will play a law enforcer known as a “timekeeper” with Pennie, as his right hand man. Sounds like a pretty nifty little genre piece.

The first look images from the film are solid, and if anything, reveal that this future world is not so different from ours. The film hits on October 28th and with Comic-Con coming up, a trailer is expected to arrive by the end of the week. [via RopeOfSilicon]

‘Fireflies In The Garden’: Julia Roberts As Ryan Reynolds’ Mom In Finally Released Film

‘Fireflies In The Garden’: Julia Roberts As Ryan Reynolds’ Mom In Finally Released Film:

Both on screen and off, the shifting of time is essential in the telling the tale of “Fireflies In The Garden.”

The film, written and directed by Dennis Lee, saw its premiere at the Berlin Film Festival in 2008. While it later hit theaters in most parts of the world, financial difficulties shelved its US distribution for nearly three years, until it was announced last week that it will finally hit theaters in select cities on October 14th.

And so, American theatergoers will at last get to see the story in which Julia Roberts, in mostly flashback footage, plays mother to a boy that will become Ryan Reynolds, who appears in the film’s present-day shots. A sweet woman and caring mom, she’s plagued by her abusive husband, played by Willem Dafoe, who leaves the boy on the side of the road one rainy day.

Seventeen years later, now fully grown and portrayed by Reynolds, he is heading home for a family reunion when a car accident kills Roberts, who is aged up with heavy makeup (at 43-years old, to Reynolds’ 34, it’s a necessity). From there, the story is a test of blood and forgiveness, trust and anger, with three generations of one family doing their best to co-exist in the wake of so much damage.

Which VMAs Style Moment Was Most Shocking?

Which VMAs Style Moment Was Most Shocking?:

Baby bumps, Britney tributes and Bruno bashing — oh my! The MTV Video Music Awards were filled with many buzz-worthy moments last night, but the style choices of several stars gave us just as much to talk about.

Lady Gaga started the two-hour show as her male alter ego, Jo Calderone, wearing Brooks Brothers pants, a men’s jacket, little makeup and a short black wig. She convincingly stayed in character (and costume) all night, even hitting on Britney Spears while presenting her with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.

Meanwhile, Nicki Minaj hit the black carpet in a jagged bodysuit accessorized with plush creatures, knee-highs and lots of colorful hair. “Tokyo inspired this outfit,” she told reporters during the show. “Harajuku is something I have been absorbing for a long time.”

Though Justin Bieber one-upped her in the shock-value department — he brought his pet snake, Johnson, along for the ride — his accessories were slightly more demure; namely, his glasses. “I was just going for something fun and youthful and not too put together,” he told reporters. “Something that would go good with the cheetah shoes.”

But Beyoncé‘s accessory was the best of all: she debuted her baby bump in a flowing orange Lanvin gown, later revealing it for the television crowds in a Dolce & Gabbana tux following her performance of “Love on Top.”

It was Katy Perry, though, who became the night’s quick-change artist, starting out in an Atelier Versace geisha-style mini-dress, complete with parasol. To introduce Adele, the big nominee slipped into a long, high-necked purple gown, a departure from her usually revealing wardrobe. She ended the night in Dior Couture, sporting a pink top paired with a black-and-white tulip-shaped skirt and yellow cube-shaped hat, but not before looking like a broken record — literally! — in a sparkly black dress accented with vinyl bearing her name.

“I just felt like being colorful and fun and with me, I am okay with self-deprecation,” Perry told reporters. “I am all right with being laughed at and laughed with and just laughing, so that was the inspiration of tonight: just to have a laugh.”

There was a lot to look at, but we want to know: which VMAs style moment was most shocking?

HTC Droid Incredible Official Android 2.3 Gingerbread Update Leaks

HTC Droid Incredible Official Android 2.3 Gingerbread Update Leaks:

There is quite a bit of confusion regarding the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the Droid Incredible. Originally, when a Gingerbread ROM leaked for the Droid Incredible, it was taken for granted that the handset will get some Gingerbread love. However, as time passed by, some HTC reps started telling Incredible users that the handset won’t be getting the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update, after all.

Things however again took a U-turn when one HTC rep confirmed that the Incredible would be getting the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update. Some documents from Verizon also leaked online, which stated that the Incredible would get the Gingerbread update. Now, a new Gingerbread ROM for the Droid Incredible has leaked online. From the look and feel of the ROM, it seems like this is the final version of the Gingerbread ROM for the Droid Incredible, which would be released to the public.

Visually, there are not many changes, except for a toggle menu and a task manager integrated into the notification bar. The Gingerbread update also brings some performance enhancements, and bug fixes. The usual Gingerbread goodies like an enhanced copy and paste functionality, and a Download Manager app is also on-board.

HTC Droid Incredible users who are interested in flashing this leaked ROM on their handset, should head over to this link for more information.

Katt Williams’ Anti-Mexican Rant In Phoenix: Comedian Takes On Latino Heckler

Katt Williams’ Anti-Mexican Rant In Phoenix: Comedian Takes On Latino Heckler:

Standup comedy is perhaps the most raw form of entertainment available on a mass scale, with just a small stage separating an audience — often inebriated — from the performer. By nature, comedians are often edgy and push boundaries, sometimes rubbing up against the sensibilities of certain viewers — and occasionally bursting way past even the more liberally drawn line of moral decency.

At a standup performance in Phoenix on Saturday, comedian Katt Williams arguably crossed that line when he got into an argument with a heckler. Once he found out that the offending audience member was of Mexican descent, he went off on a wild tangent, most of which is transcribed here.

In June, Williams was arrested for a stand off with a tractor driver, and later that month, had a meltdown on stage that included “incoherent babbling,” ripping off his shirt and doing pushups, Laughspin.com reports.

Watch the video below, and underneath that, find the rough transcription.

“Since y’all like it over here a lot. and I’m saying, if I’m speaking out of line, let me know. But I’m saying it appears to me, y’all like it over here a lot. And let me tell you why I’m making that assumption, because I have no right to make that assumption. But understand this, this what gives me the right, and don’t you get it twisted… If y’all had California and you loved it, then you shouldn’t have given that mothaf*cka up. You should have fought for California, goddamnit, since you love it..

Because you think I’m dissing Mexico and I’m defending America. Are you Mexican? Do you know where Mexico is? No this ain’t Mexico, it used to be Mexico, motherf*cker, and now it’s Phoenix, goddammit. USA! USA!

F*ck you back, n*gga. i bet you dont even go to mexico, motha f*cka… no n*gga, do you know where you at? USA! USA! I dont give a f*ck. no n*gga, this is my hood… [security comes] F*ck him! Mothaf*ckas think they can live in this country and pledge allegience to another country… do you remember when white people used to say go back to Africa? And we’d have to tell them we dont want to? So if you love Mexico, bitch, get the f*ck over there! [breaks into the National Anthem]..

We were slaves bitch, you just all work like that at the landscapers… It’s not even racial — you’re a bitch! I don’t give a f*ck what race that is, that’s a p*ssy.”

LG Optimus One Android 2.3 Gingerbread Update Rolling Out Now

LG Optimus One Android 2.3 Gingerbread Update Rolling Out Now:

LG has finally started rolling out the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for one of their most successful Android handsets – the Optimus One (P500). Even though the Korean company missed its promised deadline, it still is better than nothing.

The Android 2.3 Gingerbread for the Optimus One brings an improved copy-and-paste mechanism, a Download manager and an overall improvement in performance and stability of the phone. Sadly, not all is rosy with the update. Most Optimus One owners over at XDA forums are reporting major problems with the update. Majority of the owners complained that the phone felt sluggish after the update. They also encountered lots of bugs with the Gingerbread firmware.

The list of bugs is also pretty long, and contains some serious issues like the microphone of the phone not working for the first 2-3 seconds of a call or Apps2SD not working properly. The growing list of bugs can be found on this thread on XDA forums.

LG would soon start rolling out the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the world’s first dual-core powered phone, the Optimus 2X and the Optimus Black. Hopefully, unlike the Optimus One Gingerbread update, the quality of the final firmware of the Gingerbread build of these two handsets would be much better and less buggy.

Trailing big in the first round of the U.S. Open, Maria Sharapova thought – well, no, she was certain – that she’d pull through if she could push her inexperienced opponent to a third set.
    And Sharapova was right.
Shrieking as loudly as ever, Sharapova came back from a set and a break down against 19-year-old Heather Watson of Britain to win 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 on Monday, improving to 12-0 this year in matches that went the distance.
“It’s just a matter of belief within myself, that no matter how well or bad or good I’m playing, or my opponent is playing, I know I can tough it out,” the No. 3-seeded Sharapova said after her 2 1/2-hour victory. “No matter what the situation is, I have the belief.”
That self-confidence comes not merely from her success in three-setters this season, but also from three Grand Slam titles, including the 2006 U.S. Open. It’s the sort of track record the 102nd-ranked Watson hopes to have one day; Monday’s match was only her fifth at a major tournament.
Sharapova won six Grand Slam matches at Wimbledon alone this summer, reaching the final there before losing to Petra Kvitova. Fresh off that triumph, Kvitova – a 21-year-old from the Czech Republic seeded No. 5 in Flushing Meadows – failed to follow it up, flopping at the U.S. Open with a 7-6 (3), 6-3 loss to 48th-ranked Alexandra Dulgheru of Romania.

Kvitova is the first reigning Wimbledon women’s champion to lose her first match at the U.S. Open in the same season. Only three times had the Wimbledon winner bowed out as early as the third round in New York: Sharapova in 2004, Conchita Martinez in 1994, and Billie Jean King in 1973.
“This is something new for me,” Kvitova said about her new status as Grand Slam champion. “I’ve felt a little pressure.”
She was the only seeded woman to exit on Day 1 of the year’s last major tournament, joined on the way out by No. 15 Viktor Troicki of Serbia, a 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 loser against Alejandro Falla of Colombia.

At night, 2000-01 U.S. Open champion Venus Williams played her first match in two months and beat 91st-ranked Vesna Dolonts of Russia 6-4, 6-3. Williams hit six aces and 28 total winners against the weary Dolonts, who left Moscow at 4 a.m. EDT and arrived at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center at 4 p.m., after having flights canceled Saturday and Sunday because of Tropical Storm Irene.
“My game is built on my serve, and of course, I like to follow it up with a lot of aggressive play,” said Williams, who pulled out of recent tuneup tournaments because of a virus. “And it’s great to see a lot of those balls land in.”
In the day’s last match in Arthur Ashe Stadium, 16-time major winner Roger Federer was to face 54th-ranked Santiago Giraldo of Colombia.
Early winners included No. 8 Mardy Fish, who played his first U.S. Open match as the top-seeded American and beat Tobias Kamke 6-2, 6-2, 6-1; No. 9 Tomas Berdych, the 2010 Wimbledon runner-up; No. 13 Richard Gasquet; No. 22 Alexandr Dolgopolov; and No. 27 Marin Cilic, who eliminated 19-year-old American Ryan Harrison 6-2, 7-5, 7-6 (6).

Adam Levine Interview: Maroon 5 Frontman Talks New NBC Show, ‘The Voice’ & Tea

Adam Levine Interview: Maroon 5 Frontman Talks New NBC Show, ‘The Voice’ & Tea:

If you’re wondering whether or not Adam Levine feels intimidated by Simon Cowell’s emerging fall juggernaut “The X Factor,” the answer is “absolutely not.”

The Huffington Post recently sat down with the Maroon 5 frontman to talk “The Voice,” the new NBC show that he’s producing and his newest endeavor–professional tea-taster.

The 32-year-old Maroon 5 frontman, along with his bandmates Jesse Carmichael, James Valentine, Michael Madden, and Matt Flynn, created a Snapple drink, Tea Will Be Loved (conveniently named after their famous song “She Will Be Loved”), to benefit Feeding America. As part of the partnership, Snapple and Maroon 5 will donate $250,000 to the Feeding America, an organization close to the frontman’s heart.

“It’s so great to be in a position where you can help,” says Levine, “It seems like to not help out would be strange.”

And Levine and his bandmates were involved in every step of the tediously tasty process.

“We worked on the flavor, extensively, for hours in the lab–we really did,” says Levine. “We got really into it. We were so drunk off Snapple by the end of the day. I remember when Snapple got popular back in high school. It was huge. And then there was Fruitopia–R.I.P. Fruitopia.” Recently, in a cover story for Out Magazine, the winning “Voice” coach Levine ripped the reigning champ of reality television, “American Idol,” calling them out for their alleged policy on gay contestants.

“I’m not a fan of singing competitions,” admits Levine. “I never have been. But there was something that rang true with ‘The Voice.’ It’s just a very sincere, honest show where we were allowed to speak our minds and be ourselves and help people along–in a real way. No one is being teased; no one is being mocked. It’s all about positive reinforcement. We’re dealing with a bunch of people who are all really talented to begin with.”

And when it comes to those rumors regarding the cast’s off-screen relationships, Levine assures fans that there’s absolutely no drama between him and co-star Christina Aguilera.

“I love everyone I work with, and I think that really shows,” says Levine. “All the drama is kind of beneath us. We’re not trying to create stupid tension on the show. Any tension that we produced was all fabricated. We all liked each other. The media just played it up. Christina [Aguilera] kicks ass. She’s super talented.”

And no one knows that better than Levine, who recently collaborated with Aguilera on Maroon 5′s new single, “Moves Like Jagger.”

“We have our own path,” says Levine, referring to “The Voice’s” fall competition–Cowell’s “The X Factor”–”We’re fine.”

Yet, even though Levine isn’t a big fan of reality singing competitions, it turns out that the frontman has a soft spot for television musicals. Who knew Levine was such a Gleek? He’s going to take a step out of the big red chair and into the executive producing chair for a single-camera comedy project, with Jake Kasdan attached to executive produce and direct, that can only be described as “Cheers” meets “Glee.”

Military Spending Waste: Up To $60B In Iraq, Afghanistan War Funds Lost To Poor Planning, Oversight, Fraud

Military Spending Waste: Up To $60B In Iraq, Afghanistan War Funds Lost To Poor Planning, Oversight, Fraud:

As much as $60 billion in U.S. funds has been lost to waste and fraud in Iraq and Afghanistan over the past decade through lax oversight of contractors, poor planning and payoffs to warlords and insurgents, an independent panel investigating U.S. wartime spending estimates.

In its final report to Congress, the Commission on Wartime Contracting said the figure could grow as U.S. support for reconstruction projects and programs wanes, leaving both countries to bear the long-term costs of sustaining the schools, medical clinics, barracks, roads and power plants already built with American tax dollars.

Much of the waste and fraud could have been avoided with better planning and more aggressive oversight, the commission said. To avoid repeating the mistakes in Iraq and Afghanistan, government agencies should overhaul the way they award and manage contracts in war zones, the commission recommended.

The Associated Press obtained a copy of the commission’s 240-page report in advance of its scheduled public release on Wednesday.

Created by Congress in 2008, the eight-member commission held more than two dozen hearings, interviewed hundreds of military and civilian officials and traveled multiple times to Iraq and Afghanistan. The panel’s final report is the most comprehensive examination so far of the U.S. dependence on contractors and the government’s ability to manage them in combat areas.

The commission said calculating the exact amount lost through waste and fraud is difficult because there is no commonly accepted methodology for doing so. But using information it has gathered over the past three years, the commission said at least $31 billion has been lost and the total could be as high as $60 billion. The commission called the estimate “conservative.”

Overall, the commission said spending on contracts and grants to support U.S. operations in Iraq and Afghanistan is expected to exceed $206 billion by the end of the 2011 budget year. Based on its investigation, the commission said contracting waste in Afghanistan ranged from 10 percent to 20 percent of the $206 billion total. Fraud during the same period ran between 5 percent and 9 percent of the total, the report said.

Styled after the Truman Committee, which examined World War II spending six decades ago, the commission was vested with broad authority to examine military support contracts, reconstruction projects and private security companies. But the law creating the commission also dictated that it would cease operating at the end of September 2011, even as the U.S. operations in Iraq and Afghanistan continue to be heavily supported by contractors.

The commission cited numerous examples of waste, including a $360 million U.S.-financed agricultural development program in Afghanistan. The effort began as a $60 million project in 2009 to distribute vouchers for wheat seed and fertilizer in drought-stricken areas of northern Afghanistan. The program expanded into the south and east. Soon the U.S. was spending a $1 million a day on the program, creating an environment ripe for waste and abuse, the commission said.

Justin Bieber: ‘I Definitely Want To Be Married By 25′

Justin Bieber: ‘I Definitely Want To Be Married By 25′:

He many only be 17, but Justin Bieber is already talking marriage — and kids!

During an interview with Women’s Wear Daily, the teenage hearthrob revealed some surprising plans for his future.

“Well, by 25 or 26, I want to see myself, like, married or start looking for a family,” he said when asked where he sees himself in five years. “I want to be a young dad. I want to be able to have done what I wanted to do — to be successful, to do a movie or whatever. But if the time is right, I definitely want to be married by 25.”

But before all of his young fans start proposing, Bieber added a key statement.

“One thing — I’m not looking to get married now,” he said.

However, it looks like Bieber is already getting some hands-on training when it comes to taking care of kids. The singer and his entourage were spotted in Atlanta this week walking with a small child, and Bieber even carried the tyke into a local restaurant.

Even though he’s only 17, perhaps Bieber’s comments about wanting to be a young dad stem from his own experience growing up with teen parents. Bieber’s mom was just 18 when she had him.

His family plans may still be a few years off, but we can’t help wondering what Bieber’s girlfriend, Selena Gomez, has to say about all of this.

Chaz Bono, Jennifer Elia Step Out At Creative Arts Emmys Awards

Chaz Bono, Jennifer Elia Step Out At Creative Arts Emmys Awards:

Chaz Bono may be spending most of his time brushing up on his ballroom dancing skills, but he took time out to walk the red carpet with his longtime partner, Jennifer Elia, at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards Saturday night.

Bono is currently rehearsing for the upcoming season of “Dancing With The Stars,” where he will partner with pro Lacey Schwimmer when the show premieres Sept. 19.

“At first Chaz said yes to doing the show to have some fun but now he’s in it to win it. Not just for himself but for anyone else who has felt like they didn’t fit in,” a friend of Bono told The Huffington Post last week.

Bono himself talked about why he decided to join the show with ABC News.

“You know, it just kind of shows why for me it’s important to be on the show, because so little still is known about what it means to be transgender,” Bono said. “And there’s so many just completely inaccurate stereotypes and thoughts that people have.”

NEC LaVie Touch Windows 7 tablet comes packed with DVD-sporting dock

NEC LaVie Touch Windows 7 tablet comes packed with DVD-sporting dock:

If this nifty little bugger looks familiar, that’s because it should. NEC’s LaVie Touch sports the same design and specs as the VersaPro model we spotted back in May. The difference here is, it comes packed with a bevy of accessories, including a keyboard, mouse and a dock that happens to hold a DVD drive. Underneath the 10.1-inch, 1280 x 800, IPS touchscreen is a 1.5GHz Oak Trail CPU, 2GB of RAM and a 64GB SSD. Sure the pair of full USB ports, HDMI jack, WiFi, Bluetooth and SD reader are welcome, but it’s that optical drive packing stand that really makes this a unique package. The NEC LaVie Touch should be landing in Japan next month for around $1,200 with the accessories. Sadly, here’s no word of whether or not it’ll ever find its way stateside. Leila Lopes Of Angola Crowned Miss Universe 2011 (Photo)

Leila Lopes Of Angola Crowned Miss Universe 2011 (Photo):
Newly crowned Miss Universe Leila Lopes hopes her victory will allow her to assist her native Angola further escape its history of war and impoverishment and said she plans to focus on combatting HIV around the globe.

Speaking in a timid voice early Tuesday shortly after taking the crown in South America’s largest city, the 25-year-old Lopes said that “as Miss Angola I’ve already done a lot to help my people.”

“I’ve worked with various social causes. I work with poor kids, I work in the fight against HIV. I work to protect the elderly and I have to do everything that my country needs,” she said. “I think now as Miss Universe I will be able to do much more.”

Responding to questions, Lopes said that she has never had cosmetic surgery of any kind and that her three tips for beauty were to get a lot of sleep, use sun block even when it’s not sunny and to drink lots of water. She said her smile was her best weapon in the competition.

Asked about racism in light of the fact that she’s one of the few blacks ever crowned Miss Universe, Lopes said that “any racist needs to seek help. It’s not normal in the 21st century to think in that way.”

Lopes is Angola’s first winner. She beat out 88 other competitors to win the title during the 60th anniversary of the world’s biggest beauty pageant. She replaces last year’s winner, Ximena Navarrete of Mexico.

She deftly handled the interview question that is asked of the remaining top five contestants. She was questioned about what physical trait she would change if she could.

“Thank God I’m very satisfied with the way God created me and I wouldn’t change a thing,” Lopes said. “I consider myself a woman endowed with inner beauty. I have acquired many wonderful principles from my family and I intend to follow these for the rest of my life.”

The first runner-up was 23-year-old Olesia Stefanko of Ukraine and the second runner-up was Priscila Machado of Brazil. The third was Miss Philippines and the fourth Miss China.

Contestants spent the past three weeks in Sao Paulo, trying to learn samba dance steps, visiting impoverished children and kicking a football around for cameras as the Miss Universe pageant came to Brazil for the first time.

Despite battling against a home country favorite, Lopes won over the audience, speaking in the shared language of Portuguese. Angola, like Brazil, is a former Portuguese colony.

“She captivated the crowd and we were all behind her,” said Brazilian Natalie Bursztyn, 20, who was in the crowd inside Credicard Hall where the event took place. “It was great that the judges also saw what the fans saw and gave her the crown. Her dress was beautiful and she knew exactly what to say when they asked her the question about her looks.”

Another fan in the audience, Carolina Rocha, said Lopes’ win was “well deserved, we were cheering for her all along. Her smile and her friendliness was what set her apart from the others. She also answered her question very well, that likely helped her a lot.”

U.S. broadcast journalist Connie Chung was one of the celebrity judges, and said before the competition that she was taking the contest seriously.

“I know my job and I’ll be tough, but fair,” Chung said. “You have to keep in mind that these women are not objects just to be looked at. They’re to be taken seriously. I want to choose somebody I take seriously and the world takes seriously, too.”

Paula Shugart, president of the Miss Universe organization, was hyped for the night.

“It’s our 60th anniversary, it’s a very big show,” she said. “We’re anticipating close to a billion viewers from around the world.”

Shugart said it was fitting the globe’s biggest beauty pageant be held in Brazil at this time, as the nation prepares to host some major events in the coming years.

“I don’t think there is any doubt in the rest of the world’s mind that Brazil is the place, between hosting the Olympics and hosting the World Cup,” she said. “I love the fact we’re going to kick it off. I always say we’re the ‘World Cup’ of beauty.”

The contestants must never have been married or had children and must be at least 18 years of age and under 27 years of age by Feb. 1 of the competition year.

The pageant, hosted by NBC “Today” anchor Natalie Morales and the Bravo network’s Andy Cohen, was broadcastr live on NBC and distributed to about 170 countries. The contest is co-owned by Donald Trump and NBC, and the celebrity judges included Chung and two prominent Brazilians, supermodel Isabeli Fontana and Indy race car driver Helio Castroneves.

Morales, who is half Brazilian, said that “what’s most important is for the women to be beautiful inside and out.”

For Cohen, the task of hosting was an easy one.

“It’s a fun job. All I have to do is stand there, smile and scream the names of countries,” he said.

Sharply dressed women and men jostled for chances to have their photos taken with stars on the red carpet. Some traveled from across the globe to support contestants.

Jehona Dreshaj, 17, arrived from Kosovo to cheer on her sister, Aferdita Dreshaj, who is representing the European country.

“It doesn’t really matter the outcome, she is already a winner in our eye and we are so proud of her,” she said. “This has been an incredible experience for her and for all of us. It’s great for her to be representing our country in an event like this”

There have been no headline-grabbing gaffes going into this year’s competition, as opposed to past years that have seen controversies of various stripes. The show itself went off without a hitch.

Some of the contestants have complained to the local news media about the size of bikinis used in some photo shoots, with Miss Mexico Karin Ontiveros saying they were “very small.”

Vanessa Hudgens And Ashley Tisdale Get Really Lame Tattoos Together

Vanessa Hudgens And Ashley Tisdale Get Really Lame Tattoos Together:

I am in awe at the originality and creativity of Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale’s new tattoos. (I know that tone is sometimes difficult to interpret with text so please read the previous statement—and most of the following statements—with extremely heavy sarcasm and several eye rolls). People.com reports that the former costars of the teeny bopper hit, High School Musical, and apparent BFFs, Hudgens and Tisdale hit up a East Side Ink in New York City last week to be marked for eternity (or until older versions of themselves finally give in and spring for laser removal) with some pretty lame looking ink.

Tisdale, in a moment of mad genius, had the French phrase “jamais seule,” which means “never alone,” branded along her foot. I’m sure you guys are already forming theories about what that’s about. I just hope it’s not some Britney-Spear’s-Piece-of-Me-esque complaint about stardom or whatever. Honestly that would just be embarrassing as Tisdale is not exactly dogged by the media to find out who she’s eye banging at after-after-parties or what type of socks she wears. Show me some BritBrit-shaving-her-head level paparazzi problems and we’ll talk, Tisdale.

As for Hudgens, (who you may no longer care about since she stopped smooching Zac Efron BUT may now care about since she is allegedly smooching Hunger Games star Josh Hutcherson) she went for the classic ‘Om’ symbol, which I assume is extremely personal to her. Beyond being pretty weak content-wise, what I really find silly about this choice is the location. Hudgens had the symbol inked in two halves along the edges of her hands. For an actress this is an odd and potentially career affecting choice as it is not quite as easy to conceal as Tisdale’s canny foot-tattoo. I know this is a thing actresses are doing now (see Angelina Jolie and Megan Fox) but I just cannot understand the logic behind it. Part of the job description is to be able to transform yourself into another person. What if someone wanted to offer her the role of a girl who was smart enough not to get an ‘Om’ symbol tattooed on her hands? (Not likely but possible). Then covering the tattoo immediately becomes a factor—dealing with body makeup on her hands or paying for expensive CGI removal or writing in a character quirk where she always wears opera gloves—what a pain. And since she has nothing like the star power of a Jolie or even a Fox, producers might just skip the headache go for one of the other billion non-tattoo-having starlets out there.

The Fug Girls: Lindsay Lohan Nearly Causes Riot at Cynthia Rowley

The Fug Girls: Lindsay Lohan Nearly Causes Riot at Cynthia Rowley:

The first celeb we saw at Cynthia Rowley’s show Friday night — though by no means the last — was America’s Next Top Model‘s resident dreamboat Nigel Barker, and the gravitational pull of his hotness pulled us down to the front row to ask him about the most important development that’s occurred since we saw him in February: his once-again shaved head. And thank God. Nigel Barker with hair was like Tom Selleck without a mustache. Nigel explained that the shaved head is just cooler for summer, and that he’d only grown out his hair in the first place because he wanted to prove to his little girls that he was capable of growing hair at all. “I was astounded by the press I received,” he said. “Miss J was rather pissed off that I was stealing his moment.” Speaking of Top Model, we also couldn’t resist wondering whether or not Nigel has read Miss Tyra’s forthcoming young-adult magnum opus, Modelland, coming out Tuesday. “I haven’t read the entire thing,” Nigel hedged, “but we’ve been working on it since the last season of Top Model, so I am very familiar with all aspects of it.” We speculated that this meant they were prepping some Modelland-themed shoots for this upcoming All Stars season. Nigel just smiled. “What are my eyes saying?” he asked. “My mouth is saying nothing, and my eyes are saying something else. I’m smizing an answer to you. Read into it.” Trust me, kind sir, we will read the hell out of it. Possibly several times.

Cynthia Rowley - Front Row - Spring 2012 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week

Cynthia Rowley - Front Row - Spring 2012 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week

We were still toasting in the glow of Nigel’s hotness when, right before the lights went down, a platinum-and-orange waif in tiny trousers, massive shades, and hypnotically puffy lips burst forth from backstage, hustling to a front-row seat with ruthless efficiency (and several security guards). For one glorious, confusing moment, we — and, we later learned, everyone in the rows around us — thought this walking creamsicle had to be Donatella Versace. Then, the entire room full of journalists sat ramrod straight and let out excited, disbelieving, four-letter expletives as we all realized this was actually Lindsay Freaking Lohan. We then simultaneously commenced trying to figure out if she was wearing pants. (They were shorts. Small ones. Very, very small ones.) The take-home here for Lindsay should be that we all initially mistook her for somebody much crispier who is thirty years her senior, but we suspect instead she will mentally gloss over that part and focus only on how fast the crowd of blasé, already-burned-out fashionistas whipped out their smartphones and overloaded AT&T service. One photographer even went so far as to walk down onto the runway — which we’d been expressly forbidden to do, given that it was mirrored — and get in her face to take a photo, prompting event organizers to confiscate both his camera (which looked more expensive than her extensions) and his credentials, which they ripped from his neck with soap-operatic verve. The room applauded, led by Lindsay herself, as she settled into her seat between a shell-shocked-seeming Leigh Lezark — we feel you, Leigh — and Lindsay’s companion, who is either a Johnny Depp superfan or an actual pirate. Seriously, he had the long hair and the scruff and the vest flapping over a mostly-open shirt… all he was missing was a parrot and an eye-patch, although we’d bet Lindsay has a couple of those floating around her hotel room somewhere.

Girls Volleyball: Ryan, Oak Forest Spike Evergreen Park Photo:
Behind Gina Ryan’s offensive attack, the Bengals earn a 25-15, 25-20 home victory over the Mustangs.

After a lackluster performance at the Falcon Blue and Gold Classic last weekend, the Oak Forest girls volleyball team was in need of a quick turnaround.

The defending sectional champion Bengals got exactly that on Tuesday night, playing one of their best games of the young season to start the match and then hanging on to beat Evergreen Park 25-15, 25-20 at Oak Forest.

“We were talking, everything was great,” Oak Forest outside hitter Gina Ryan said. “There were great sets and great passes today. We had a lot of energy today.”

Oak Forest (3-4, 1-0 South Suburban Conference) had its offense clicking from the get-go. Ryan had four early kills to help give the Bengals a quick 11-3 lead. Junior setter Kate Zickus was passing beautifully, and that set up a number of easy hits for Oak Forest’s outside and middle hitters.

A string of good serves, including back-to-back aces from senior libero Jill Krygowski, put Oak Forest up 23-8, but Evergreen Park (1-2, 0-1 South Suburban Conference) fought back with a 7-1 run, forcing Oak Forest to call a timeout. A mis-hit by Evergreen Park’s Megan Beckow on the ensuing point gave Oak Forest the opening game.

“They used our defense as a punching bag, basically,” Evergreen Park coach Carrie Berry said.

Oak Forest struggled to hit with the same accuracy as it had in the opening game, enabling Evergreen Park to get out to an early 7-6 lead in game two. The Mustangs played better defense and senior Sam Rule was able to win a couple of key points from her setter position.

“Our ball control was better, so if your ball control is there and you’re passing and serve-receive and playing defense, then good things happen on offense,” Berry said.

With Evergreen trailing 21-18, middle blocker Patrice Silas came up with a huge block to pull the Mustangs to within two. But Oak Forest won five of the final six points to close out the match, 25-20.

Ryan finished with nine kills and nine digs for Oak Forest, while Zickus had 23 assists. Rule had seven assists for Evergreen Park, and libero Colleen Burns contributed 12 digs.

Berry said that at this stage of the season there is still a lot to work on—especially for a team that is relatively young—but a lot of it is mental. The Mustangs will play in the West Aurora Invitational this weekend, giving them five more games to gain experience.

“They show great potential. They have a lot of energy,” Berry said. “I just think that they’re young and somewhat inexperienced, so they don’t know how to handle it when they do get down in a match or they start losing.”

Tanzania: Ship Sinks, Hundreds Killed PHOTO GALLERY

Tanzania: Ship Sinks, Hundreds Killed PHOTO GALLERY:
More than 240 people were killed when a crowded ferry sank off Tanzania’s coast and some 600 have been rescued, officials said Sunday, figures that indicate the boat was filled beyond capacity.

Assistant police commissioner Mussa Ali Mussa, the head of police in Zanzibar, said Sunday that at least 240 people died when the ferry sank early Saturday. His comments were broadcast by state-owned channel TBC.

Relatives had claimed 192 bodies and 28 more were awaiting identification on Sunday, said Mohammed Aboud Mohammed, the minister for state in the vice president’s office on the island of Zanzibar. He said around 600 people had been rescued so far and that the government was still looking for the vessel’s captain.

“The government is holding the chief engineer for questioning in order to gather details,” said Mohammed. “The captain of the ferry is still missing and the government doesn’t know precisely the owner of the ferry.”

Survivors said the M.V. Spice Islanders, which sank near the tourist destination of Zanzibar, was well beyond its official capacity of 600 passengers. Many residents angrily asked why the boat had been allowed to leave port so overloaded.

The bodies were taken to a sports field, where imams said prayers and the bodies were washed and wrapped in white according to Islamic custom. The government is paying for all funeral costs, Mohammed said.

Weeping families walked among them looking for their loved ones, falling into each others’ arms if they recognized a relative or neighbor. Most of the corpses were wrapped in cloth with a photo of the face placed on the front. Some of the ship’s passengers were mutilated when cargo fell on top of them when the boat began to list.

Among those still searching for news was Omar Saied, who arrived from Tanzania’s commercial capital of Dar es Salaam to search for his nephew and niece, on their way to a wedding on the island of Pemba.

“I’m looking for my missing family,” he said. “So far our hope has been in vain.”

International charity Save the Children said it launched an emergency response for injured and traumatized children.

The charity described the “incredible bravery” of young survivors, including one 6-year-old with a lifejacket who saved his 18-month-old brother by holding on to him in the sea for four hours until they were rescued.

It said another set of brothers – aged 7 and 9 – clung to a floating freezer to stay alive.

The charity said they had been given clothes, food and clean water and that 79 out of 129 children it has cared for have been reunited with their families. The rest are in the hospital, Save the Children said.

“Children arrived at our center freezing, dehydrated and suffering from shock,” said Mubarak Maman, the charity’s team leader in Zanzibar. “Many had spent hours alone in the dark sea clinging onto floating luggage to stop themselves from drowning, and had lost their parents and siblings in the chaos. Others had been seriously injured or were vomiting from the sea water.”

He said it was essential that the charity was there to provide crucial care and comfort, and to register the children so “none were lost in the panic.”

Deena and Snooki Accidentally Fight Each Other on ‘Jersey Shore

Deena and Snooki Accidentally Fight Each Other on ‘Jersey Shore:
Forget that battle between Mike and Ronnie on ‘Jersey Shore’ (Thu., 10PM ET on MTV) last week. That was nothing compared to the epic throw-down that went down this week in the club. And besides, wasn’t Mike vs. Ronnie really just Mike vs. The Wall, with Mike going down in the first round?

This time, though, it was on when someone threw a drink over Deena in the club. As Deena went off to “f****** knock that b**** out,” Nicole decided to go back her girl up. Unfortunately, the club was dark and things got a little confused.

“I’m pulling this girl’s hair and some girl’s pulling my hair and then I realize it’s my meatball, Deena,” Snooki said later. That’s right, Deena and Snooki were accidentally fighting each other.

“That was my favorite thing, when you started fighting each other,” Vinny said, gleefully telling anyone who would listen. We agree whole-heartedly. Best. ‘Jersey Shore.’ Fight. Ever!

Stosur Beats Kerber In U.S. Open 2011 Semifinals

Stosur Beats Kerber In U.S. Open 2011 Semifinals:

Sam Stosur told her parents she wasn’t leaving for school until Patrick Rafter won the U.S. Open.

Growing up in Australia, Stosur was glued to the TV when her countryman captured titles in 1997 and ’98. Now she wonders if kids back home will do the same when she plays Serena Williams for the Open championship Sunday.

The 27-year-old Stosur reached her second major final Saturday, her experience showing in a three-set victory over 92nd-ranked Angelique Kerber.

The ninth-seeded Aussie won 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 in a semifinal that would have seemed overshadowed by the Williams-Caroline Wozniacki tilt even if it weren’t relegated to the Grandstand.

The 2010 French Open runner-up, Stosur had two record-setting three-set wins earlier in the tournament, so this 1-hour, 46-minute match seemed like a breeze in comparison. She went up 5-0 in the final set, then was broken when she first tried to serve out the match.

The second time, Stosur had to save four break points before finally clinching victory with an emphatic backhand volley.

Stosur lost a tight 6-4, 7-6 (2) final to Francesca Schiavone at Roland Garros last year, wasting a break point in the second set.

“It had never happened up until that point, so you never know if it is going to happen again,” she said. “Multiple people came up to me and said, ‘You’re gonna get another chance. You can come back and make it again.’ Of course you want to believe that, but until it happens, you never know if that’s the case.”

Kerber had never been past the third round of a Grand Slam before this tournament. The German still hasn’t beaten a top-10 opponent – she hadn’t faced any player ranked better than No. 13 in her run at the Open.

Stosur needed 3 hours, 16 minutes to win in the third round against Nadia Petrova 7-6 (5), 6-7 (5), 7-5 – the longest women’s match at the Open since the advent of the tiebreaker in 1970. Two days later, Stosur was part of the longest tiebreaker in a women’s Grand Slam, beating Maria Kirilenko 6-2, 6-7 (15), 6-3.

This semifinal wasn’t on the center court of Arthur Ashe Stadium because rain delays meant there were four singles matches Saturday instead of the normal three. It had to be played in Flushing Meadows’ third-largest venue because of water on the court at Louis Armstrong Stadium.

Stosur and Kerber pleaded with tournament officials that their match belonged on Ashe, to no avail.

Oscar De La Hoya Interview: Retired Boxing Champ Reveals Addictions On Univision

Oscar De La Hoya Interview: Retired Boxing Champ Reveals Addictions On Univision:
Former boxing champion Oscar De La Hoya said thought about suicide and has been going to rehab because he has become dependent on drugs and alcohol in an interview with Spanish-language network Univision.

“Rock bottom was recently,” De La Hoya said, according to an English-language transcript provided by the network. “Within couple of years, just thinking if my life was even worth it. I don’t have the strength, I don’t have the courage to take my own life but I was thinking about it.”

De La Hoya says he has been sober for three months after undergoing treatment and joining Alcoholics Anonymous.

He said he was unfaithful to his wife and that they were separated for a while.

“We are obviously not talking a Tiger Woods here, but I was unfaithful,” De La Hoya said.

De La Hoya retired in 2009 after a 16-year career in which he won 10 world titles in six divisions and became boxing’s most popular fighter.

De La Hoya was thoroughly beaten by Manny Pacquiao in his last fight. He won his last title in May 2006, beating Ricardo Mayorga in six rounds for the WBC 154-pound belt. He finished with a record of 39-6 and 30 knockouts.

Known as “The Golden Boy,” De La Hoya transcended his sport, using his bilingual skills to generate crossover appeal among Latinos and whites.

He began boxing at age 5, following in the path of his grandfather and father. He won an Olympic gold medal at the 1992 Barcelona Games, delivering on a promise to his late mother, Cecilia, who died of breast cancer two years earlier.

Natalie Portman Goofs Off In ‘Hesher’ Outtakes

Natalie Portman Goofs Off In ‘Hesher’ Outtakes:
For a film about an anarchist drifter and a broken family, Natalie Portman sure was able to have a surprising amount of fun.

Portman starred as a grocery clerk and love interest to Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the indie drama “Hesher,” the story of a fire-setting, family crashing mystery man who plants himself in the home of a family mourning the loss of its matriarch. He certainly shakes things up — for better or worse is up for debate — but there aren’t a ton of laughs to be had. In the final film, at least.

In some outtakes released for the film’s upcoming DVD, Portman manages to have some fun with Devin Brochu, who plays young and impressionable TJ, around whom the drama often revolves.

Portman has flexed her comedy muscle before, most recently in the bomb spoof “Your Highness,” but she played a self-serious role in that film. Here, she’s relaxed and having fun with a child — which, of course, bodes well for her new gig as a mother.

Competition Brews To Become ‘World’s Heaviest Woman’ In Guinness World Records

Competition Brews To Become ‘World’s Heaviest Woman’ In Guinness World Records:
A 32-year-old woman is attempting to become the heaviest woman ever, but her nearest competitor, a woman who holds the record of “World’s Fattest Mom,” is having a hard time letting go of her heavyweight claim to fame, even as she says she’s going on a diet.

Susanne Eman, a 728-pound woman in Casa Grande, Ariz., is attempting to get into Guinness World Records as the “World’s Heaviest Woman,” and hopes to reach her goal by the time she’s 41. The 2012 edition of the book will be released later this month.

The last woman to hold the title, 1,200-pound Rosalie Bradford, died in 2006.

“The category is currently open,” a Guinness representative told HuffPost Weird News. “We’ve got several claims that we’re researching, and we may have a new title holder very soon.”

Eman has told reporters that she wants to shatter the record by packing on 1,600 pounds. Her ultimate goal: weighing in at one ton.

One of Eman’s high profile rivals, Donna Simpson, of Akron, Ohio, holds the Guinness record for heaviest woman ever to bear children. She won the title by weighing a whopping 532 pounds when she gave birth to her daughter, Jacqueline, in February 2007 — an event that required 30 doctors.

Simpson just announced to the world via HuffPost Weird News that she’s decided to go on a diet, but she’s having a hard time letting go of the “prestige” that goes along with the honor of being America’s heaviest woman — and said she views Eman as an upstart trying to usurp her hard-earned fame.

“She’s Lady Goo Goo to my Lady Gaga,” Simpson laughed, adding that no one in the “feeder” community — a subculture of men who love large women — knows who Eman is.

“If she was a serious gainer, the community would know about her,” Simpson said.

Simpson said she suspects that Eman is in cahoots with her ex-manager and is trying to get publicity in order to compete for her fan base. Even worse: She accuses Eman of trying to take away her “World’s Fattest Mom” title.

“She says she’s surpassed me as the world’s fattest mom, but she doesn’t understand that Guinness gave me the record because I was 532 pounds when I gave birth,” Simpson said. “She wasn’t that large when she gave birth to her kids.”

Simpson also feels Eman is irresponsible for having her teenage kids feed her, as opposed to the adult “feeder/gainer” relationship she had with her former fiance, Philippe Gouamba, with whom she broke up a few weeks ago.

Sharon West, Missing Texas Teen, Vanishes Without A Trace

Sharon West, Missing Texas Teen, Vanishes Without A Trace:
A distraught mother in southeastern Texas is trying to locate her 15-year-old daughter who disappeared under mysterious circumstances more than a month ago.

“I can’t even describe how I am feeling. I miss her so much. I just want my baby to come home,” Sandra West told The Huffington Post.

West’s daughter, Sharon West, has not been seen since July 30. The teen had been staying with family friends in Fannett, an unincorporated town about an hour northeast of Houston. Her living arrangements there were temporary while her mom attempted to secure a job.

Sharon West’s friend, Austin Meaux, last saw her at the residence in the 11100 Block of Gaulding Road at about 2:00 a.m. He said she was awake and still there when the rest of the family went to sleep.

According to Chuck Foreman, a private investigator based out of Austin who has volunteered to assist in the case, West sent a text message to a friend at about 5:20 a.m., saying she was at the Seabreeze Youth Club’s soccer field, a couple of miles from where she was staying.

Roughly 40 minutes later, West used her cellphone to contact another friend and again indicated she was at the soccer field. According to police the area is a popular hangout area for kids. West did not contact any other friends after that and her cellphone died shortly thereafter.

‘HawthoRNe’ Canceled: Jada Pinkett Smith Show Canceled

‘HawthoRNe’ Canceled: Jada Pinkett Smith Show Canceled:
Hasn’t been a good two weeks for Jada Pinkett Smith.

Last week, the actress/metal singer had to fend off a report that she and husband Will Smith were separating, with one report claiming that she had an affair with Marc Anthony.

Now, she’s announced on Whosay that the TNT medical drama has been canceled after three seasons.

Hey everyone…if you don’t know Hawthorne will not be returning for another season. I want to say thank you to all the fans for being Hawthorne soldiers. All our facebook fans…twitter soldiers and viewers…you held us down. Of course you know there is more to come…believe it!

One silver lining? She won’t have to deal with those Anthony rumors anymore — he was her costar on the show.

‘The Lone Ranger’: $215 Million Budget Decision For Depp, Disney

‘The Lone Ranger’: $215 Million Budget Decision For Depp, Disney:
The showdown over “The Lone Ranger” is coming down to a final financial shootout three sunsets from Saturday.

A few weeks back, Disney shut down the pre-production on the planned Johnny Depp-starring big screen remake, unhappy with a proposed $250 million budget coming from director Gore Verbinski.

The film called for Depp to star as Tonto, the Lone Ranger’s traditional sidekick, in a kind of role reversal in which the Native American character would take the lead in the pursuit of justice. Armie Hammer, best known for his dual work in “The Social Network” and a co-star in the upcoming Clint Eastwood-directed J. Edgar Hoover biopic, was set to play the title character.

Depp and Verbinski have worked to pare down the budget, though the high-powered actor refuses to go ahead without Verbinski, eschewing suggestions that perhaps a less ambitious director would help with cost-cutting. Now, Variety reports that the two sides are set to meet early next week, following the Labor Day holiday, to hash out whether they can get on the same financial page and move forward with the film.

The shutdown was an unexpected turn of events, given the studio’s massively successful partnership with Depp and Verbinski on the first three “Pirates of the Caribbean” films, which together grossed over $2.5 billion worldwide. But with Disney pouring big money into films such as “John Carter” and “Oz: The Great and Powerful,” word was that they were uncomfortable putting a quarter billion dollars into production, and more into promotion, of a film based on a 60s TV series.

The movie is a passion project for Depp, who has spoken of his love of the series and his desire to portray the famous sidekick in a more fair, powerful light.

Depp has a long line of other films on the docket, even if this one doesn’t work out. He just signed on to produce and star in a remake of the classic noir book/film series, “The Thin Man,” and is currently filming a big screen adaptation of the bizarre goth TV series, “Dark Shadows.” There’s also word that he’ll adapt the TV show “Kolchak: The Night Stalker” into a film, as well as develop and star in a film based on Paul Revere.

Wozniacki Beats King In U.S. Open’s 3rd Round

Wozniacki Beats King In U.S. Open’s 3rd Round:
Top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki beat 103rd-ranked Vania King 6-2, 6-4 at the U.S. Open on Saturday to reach the fourth round for the ninth time in the past 10 Grand Slam tournaments.

Wozniacki was broken in the opening game, but broke right back to take control. She was the runner-up at the 2009 U.S. Open and still seeks her first major championship.

King is a 22-year-old American who splits time between California and Florida. She fell to 0-16 in matches against players ranked in the top 10. She won women’s doubles titles at the U.S. Open and Wimbledon last year, but she’s never made it past the third round at a Grand Slam tournament in singles.

She made 39 unforced errors against Wozniacki, who played her usual brand of steady tennis and made only 17.

Poonam Pandey to Partially strip for Team India!(Photo):
India made history by lifting the World Cup at the Wankhede Stadium on April 2, 2011. Millions of people were praying for India when the cricketers started the match. Amongst all the others was actor Poonam Pandey, but the only difference was that Poonam had promised the team much more than just her prayers. However, her claims couldn’t materialize due to various reasons.

But now, Poonam Pandey is back in the news with her tweets for the men in blue. Poonam has gone ahead and posted on the micro-blogging site, that she will be lifting her suspense over her partially promised deed. Apparently, Poonam is all set to inspire the men in blue by delivering on her promise.

“After a whitewash by the English, Dhoni and his boys are very dejected. I want them to win the ODIs and show the world that we are still number one. An ‘Inspiration’ is on the way for the Team…. (Keep watching this space) Today!!!All sportsmen need ‘inspiration’ 2 perform well. And I love my country and want my team to b on top always. (Keep watching this space) Sep. 2 (sic),” tweeted Poonam on the micro-blogging site.

“Every time Dhoni hits a six, I am raising my hands to celebrate. Don’t you wish he hits them all day, Sep. 2 (Keep Watching this Space) A lap of honour, a round of applause, India will win the series. Why? Cause I’m right behind the boys (keep watching this space) Sep. 2 (sic),” she added.

A die-hard fan of the cricket team, Poonam had promised to partially strip for the team to inspire them. After the shameful defeat in the test series, let’s hope that the Indian team gets inspired by Poonam and we win the ODI’s finally.

Angelina Jolie Spends $2,000 In 15 Minute Shopping Spree

Angelina Jolie Spends $2,000 In 15 Minute Shopping Spree:

Lately we’ve seen some celebs give new meaning to the term “fast fashion.”

Beyoncé, along with mom Tina Knowles, dropped $14,000 in 90 minutes on a London shopping trip in July (and who can blame them — we lose all self-discipline every time we enter Topshop, too).

But Angelina Jolie may have just set the bar for quickie spending sprees. The actress, tykes in tow, hit the French Connection store on King’s Road in west London, where she evidently saw a lot that she liked in a short time.

Jolie combed the racks for stylish fall staples like a mustard cami, a white blouse and a basic black mid-length skirt, the Daily Mail reports.

During her 15-minute visit to the shop, she also managed to pick up a dozen or so items for her brood (daughters Shiloh, 5, and Zahara, 6, were by her side). The total tab for her finds? £1,300 (equivalent to about $2,103).

Personally, we like to take more time to ponder our purchases — especially when dropping a large sum of cash. But hey, at least we now know that retail therapy has its health benefits.
