  • HTC Salsa: Android Smartphone Full Specifications & Price

HTC has released two ‘Facebook phones’ of late – the Qwerty-packing ChaCha and the Salsa, the latter being a compact bundle of fun, which wears its dedicated Facebook button just beneath its screen.

HTC’s Salsa: spiced with Facebook favours

While the designers of the ChaCha had obviously looked over the shoulder of a BlackBerry owner or two, the Salsa’s style keeps things in-house with a nod to the HTC Desire’s odd little chin at the bottom of the phone, which seems to be getting less pronounced with each incarnation.

That and the bright blue Facebook button are the only distinctive features on the front, which otherwise only has the usual four touch-sensitive Android buttons nestling beneath the 3.4in touch screen, with a VGA front-facing camera and wide, thin loudspeaker above it.

It’s comfortably pocket-sized at 109 x 59 x 12mm and 120g and makes efficient use of the sides with a slimline volume rocker, micro USB port and large camera shutter button. On the top are a power/sleep button and 3.5mm headphone jack. The nicely sensitive touch screen delivers 480 x 320-pixel resolution. Par for the course really, but sharp and vibrant with it.

The operating system is Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread which is very nearly the latest version (that would be 2.3.4) but despite the front-facing camera, there’s no support for video calling.

The 800MHz processor might seem a little underpowered on paper for the job of dealing with the 2.1 version of Sense, which can be quite intense on the graphics. Yet, in practice, it coped with multi-tasking just fine. So you can have music playing while surfing the web and check your emails, though it can start to stutter if you push it much more than that.

Rovio wants Angry Birds to Have a Billion Fans

Rovio wants Angry Birds to Have a Billion Fans: "

Angry Birds‘ developer Rovio is betting everything it has on the franchise, and will be expanding it rather than looking towards new IPs.

“We are betting everything on Angry Birds,” Rovio head Peter Vesterbacka said, according to VentureBeat. “We want to be the first entertainment brand with a billion fans. That will take us two or three years to do. Next year, we want to be the leading entertainment brand in China.”

The developer is pushing out into China in an attempt to reach out to the fans there, and they hope that Angry Birds can become a worldwide entertainment brand. In order to keep the brand going, Rovio will be taking inspiration from Nintendo and following the Mario route of endless spin-offs. I bet you can’t wait for Angry Birds Tennis.

Rovio’s strategy of putting all their bird eggs in one angry basket is probably the safe one when you consider they already have 250million downloads and scooped the coveted Grand Prix award at the Develop Awards last night.

‘Sex And The City’ Prequel Rumors Fly; Who Would You Cast?

The “Sex and the City” ladies have been entertaining audiences for years. We’ve followed the exploits of Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kirsten Davis for 94 television episodes and two movies. Given the fact the second flick sucked balls and the ladies are creepin’ on menopause (if not already there), the franchise is looking into replacing the cast with a much younger group of ladies.
Say what? It’s almost sacrilegious to think of other actresses playing the iconic roles of Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte. But if the Daily Mail is correct with their report, then we should brace ourselves for this huge change. The rumored prequel will follow the characters’ adventures in New York City during their twenties. The plot will be based off the two books written by SATC writer Candice Bushnell- “The Carrie Diaries” and “Summer and The City“.

As you would expect, the original ladies don’t think messing with the SATC formula is a good idea. Sarah Jessica Parker told the Los Angeles Times earlier this year, “I don’t think we can pretend to go back… It’s creating two histories. It’s like, ‘Oh I didn’t know that about Carrie Bradshaw.” Kristin Davis also chimed in and told E! this February, ‘We’ve discussed our history in the show already so for all of our fervent fans who listen to what we say, why would we rewrite that?”. Personally, I’m all up for the change. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

According to Daily Mail’s article, the four young ladies above are the top choices to play the four characters. Gossip Girl’s Blake Lively would play Samantha Jones, while Bieber’s main lady Selena Gomez would step into Charlotte York’s conservative wardrobe. Emma Roberts and the other Olsen sister, Elizabeth Olsen, would portray Miranda Hobbes and Carrie Bradshaw respectively.

With exception to Olsen’s potential casting, I’m kinda happy with the names being thrown out there. Lively would be perfect as a young Samantha. That girl just oozes sex. I can also see Roberts capturing the essence of a young Miranda to pitch perfection. Gomez never really resonated with me, but she’s kinda growing on me and casting her as the waspy Charlotte would be hilarious.

Captain fantastic’s most Difficult Springbok Tour

Captain fantastic’s most Difficult Springbok Tour: "

John Smit is the most experienced and one of the most successful captains in test rugby but even he admits it has been a challenge to raise spirits in the weakened Springbok touring squad this week.

Without the 21 frontline players left at home to recuperate, the 33-year-old led the South Africans to a 39-20 battering by the Wallabies in Sydney last weekend and will captain his country for the 78th time against the All Blacks on Saturday.

Smit, who has led South Africa to two Tri-Nations titles, a series victory over the British and Irish Lions and, of course, the 2007 World Cup triumph, said the inexperience of the squad had made this a very tough tour.

“It’s been quite a difficult trip … this time round the challenges have been far larger,” Smit told reporters on Friday.

“I think my biggest job has just to try and get the guys to keep renewing their own self-belief in what they can do and what got them here, against the continual struggle of people telling them they don’t have that ability.

“It’s difficult to keep a young side understanding what has got them to this level, the fact that they have been chosen to put a green and gold jersey over their heads when it doesn’t go well,” he added.

“So we had to be really hard on Monday but keep building on these guys because they are going to be playing test rugby for some time after this World Cup, they are going to be the future of rugby in our country.

“It’s important for them not to think that every time they get into this environment, the whole world’s hating them.”

One of the brightest young talents in South African rugby is Patrick Lambie, who will make his first Springboks start at fullback against the All Blacks in Wellington on Saturday.

“He’s an amazing young man,” said Smit, who plays with Lambie in Super rugby with the Sharks. “If you had a daughter of 18-years-old, he’s about the only rugby player you’d allow her to walk out with.

“An absolute gentleman, really intelligent, he really commands his position even as a 20-year-old. He’s got all-round skills and the composure that’s not the norm with a guy his age. I do think he’ll be around for a long time.”

IAEA : Nuclear power use to grow despite Fukushima

IAEA : Nuclear power use to grow despite Fukushima: "

The head of the U.N. atomic watchdog said Tuesday that nuclear power will keep growing in the world despite the crisis at Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi plant, which he visited the previous day. Yukiya Amano, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), was speaking after meeting Prime Minister Naoto Kan, who has advocated a phase-out of nuclear power in the quake-prone nation.

“It is certain that the number of nuclear reactors will increase, even if not as quickly as before,” Amano, a Japanese former senior diplomat, said after his meeting Kan in Tokyo.

“Some countries, including Germany, have reviewed their nuclear energy policy, but many other countries believe they need nuclear reactors to tackle problems such as global warming,” he told reporters. “Therefore, securing safety is more important than anything.”

Amano, who visited the crippled Fukushima Daiichi plant on Monday, said he affirmed to Kan that the international nuclear body will help the disaster-hit country bring the atomic power plant under control.

The Fukushima plant was battered by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, suffered meltdowns and explosions in the days that followed, and continues to release radioactive material into the environment.

“I told the prime minister that the IAEA can help Japan because we have knowledge and experience on decontamination and the management of melted or spent nuclear fuel,” he said.

Japan and plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) are trying to bring the plant’s reactors to stable “cold shutdown” by January.

Kan has also announced “stress tests,” modeled on a similar program in the European Union, for all nuclear reactors in Japan. The majority of the nation’s 54 reactors are currently offline for safety checks.

“I think it’s very good that countries check the safety of nuclear generation after the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi plant,” said Amano. “It would be good if the IAEA could review such safety inspections internationally.”

Debt Ceiling Battle: Harry Reid’s Plan May Benefit Smartphone Users

Debt Ceiling Battle: Harry Reid’s Plan May Benefit Smartphone Users: "

The debt ceiling battle could produce an unlikely winner: smartphone users.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s current plan would direct the Federal Communications Commission to auction off highly valuable radio spectrum to wireless carriers desperate for more airwaves. Companies such as AT&T and T-Mobile USA say they need more capacity to keep up as their customers increasingly use iPhones, tablets and other portable devices to handle mobile applications, online video and other bandwidth-hungry services.

The plan could generate critical revenue for a government spending beyond its means. Congressional budget officials estimate the auctions would raise $13.1 billion for deficit reduction.

Reid’s proposal would also deliver a big victory to public safety officials: It would set aside airwaves and money for the construction of a nationwide wireless broadband network that would let police officers, firefighters and emergency medical workers communicate with each other across agencies and jurisdictions.

“Spectrum auctions are a win-win-win,” said Tim Doyle, a spokesman for the Consumers Electronics Association.

But the proposal still faces significant hurdles. For one thing, a competing debt ceiling plan from House Speaker John Boehner, which will be voted on Thursday, contains nothing on wireless spectrum auctions. Boehner’s focus is on spending cuts, not finding new sources of revenue. What’s more, Reid’s proposal has run into major opposition from television broadcasters, which are under pressure to give up spectrum that would be sold to wireless carriers.

The haggling over wireless spectrum auctions comes as Congress rushes to try to agree on a plan to stave off an unprecedented U.S. default on its debt, which could have catastrophic consequences for the global economy. The Treasury Department has warned that the government will run out of money to pay its bills after Aug. 2 if Congress does not raise the debt ceiling. Reid and Boehner are pushing competing proposals to lift the debt limit and slash spending.

No matter how the current fight plays out, many in Washington see spectrum auctions as an attractive way to chip away at the federal deficit.

Stifel Nicolaus analyst David Kaut, for one, says spectrum auction legislation has a good shot of passage in Congress – whether it is part of the current debt ceiling package, a deficit reduction measure down the road or even a stand-alone bill.
