The Hills stars Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt have admitted that their “famous for being famous” careers are over. After forcing their way into the tabloids with increasingly bizarre storylines featuring extreme plastic surgery and a staged divorce, the couple have admitted that they are now broke and living at Pratt’s parents’ house.
According to the Daily Mail, the couple – known as Speidi – revealed that their dramatic break-up, divorce petition and eventual reconciliation was all part of a last-ditch plan to stay in the fame game.
“At that point, we were pulling our last cards,” Pratt said in an interview with gossip site Daily Beast .
“We felt the hot-air balloon losing its gas. And at that stage, our income would be selling the photo that would go along with the divorce.”At one point, the couple were raking in thousands of dollars for staged paparazzi photoshoots. Montag, who estimates that she spent $2million on an ill-fated pop career, also revealed that she regretted her infamous decision to have ten plastic surgery procedures in one day. Pratt is saddled with a wardrobe worth a cool $1million. Having become used to dining at some of the most exclusive restaurants in Hollywood, the couple now spend their time holed up in a house in Santa Barbara, eating Mexican food.Montag became famous in 2006 as Lauren Conrad’s sidekick in the MTV reality series, The Hills. Pratt joined the show in season two, winning Montag’s heart, but driving a wedge between her and Conrad. By season six, however, the show’s ratings had dropped and Pratt was banned after a highly publicised fight with one of the show’s producers.According to Pratt, the bust-up occurred when the show’s producers encouraged him to be violent towards his sister and co-star Stephanie Pratt.
“That’s when I snapped,” Pratt told the Daily Beast. “To the point when I said – and this is when the producers got scared of me – ‘You want me to punch my sister in the face? Are you trying to get me to kill you?’ I didn’t say, ‘I’m killing you.’ If I did, MTV would have had me arrested.”
