americas got talent, Jackie Evancho, sharon osbourne

Late on Friday, New York became the sixth (and most populous) state in the nation to pass a law allowing gay marriage, and in celebration, stars joined supporters of the measure to cheer the historic milestone on Twitter.

Pink gave an all-caps jump for joy, shouting, "CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! ABOUT TIME!"

Harris tweeted, "It PASSED! Marriage equality in NY!! Yes!! Progress!! Thank you everyone who worked so hard on this!! A historic night!" His elated partner, David Burtka, announced, "I've already proposed, he said yes! Thank god!" (He soon added a clarification: "Neil and I have been wearing rings for years. We have been engaged for a while. It did not just happen.")

Russell Simmons, who gave counsel to Tracy Morgan during the comic's recent homophobia controversy, logged on to tweet, "I applaud the work of our state gov't and all of the advocates on tonight's vote to legalize same sex marriage." He added, "The rights u take for granted are only valid if u fight to give those same rights to others."

Lady Gaga said, "I can't stop crying. We did it kids."

Jackie Evancho Charms Sharon Osbourne All Over Again

As one of the biggest discoveries to come out of NBC's 'America's Got Talent,' Jackie Evancho has had an exciting year.

The 11-year-old classical singer released a best-selling Christmas album during the holiday season, and just released her major-label debut, 'Dream With Me.'

On Friday's episode of 'The Talk' (CBS), Sharon Osbourne -- who does double duty as both 'Talent' judge and 'Talk' host -- asked the pint-sized vocalist about the favorite people she's met and places she's been.

Evancho is from Pittsburgh but has definitely taken a shine to Hollywood life. Her favorite locale to visit? "I love being in Malibu," she said. "It's so cool there, and the water is just, it's nice....and I love the beach." Most impressive to the grade-schooler? "I found a sand dollar there," she revealed with a grin.

Whitney Port uses retail therapy to get over her breakup from Ben Nemtin

Former Hills star Whitney Port did some bonding with younger sibling Paige in Beverly Hills yesterday as the pair put her credit card to work in the pricey boutiques.
The family day out is just what Whitney needed after recently splitting up with her boyfriend of a year, fellow MTV star Ben Nemtin. The 26-year-old confirmed the break up earlier this month as she celebrated National Iced Tea Day with Snapple in New York.

Officers told not to arrest people who scream obscenities because courts won't convict

Police have been banned from arresting foul-mouthed yobs who abuse them with the most offensive swear words in the language.
The rule change, which has sparked a revolt in the force and anger among MPs, is revealed in secret advice issued to officers and leaked to The Mail on Sunday.
Scotland Yard has issued a card to its officers, telling them to do nothing if they are subjected to a torrent of obscene abuse.
The card, which the police are told to keep on them, secreted behind their warrant badges, says: ‘The courts do not accept police officers are caused harassment, alarm or distress by words such as ‘f**k, c**t, b*****ks, w*****s’.
The guidance has been issued despite existing laws that sanction the fining of people who swear at police and the jailing of persistent offenders.
The ‘licence to swear’ edict has enraged senior officers, who describe it as a sign of a collapse in respect for the police. They say it will make it harder for them to deal with public-order problems and cope with the increase in drunken yobs outside pubs and nightclubs.
The rule change was also condemned by MPs. Tory MP David Davies, who serves as a Special Constable, said: ‘This is a threat to law and order. When I trained in London four years ago, if someone swore directly at you – I was called a “f****** pig”, for instance – you would give them one warning, then arrest them if they refused to stop.
‘It is vital that you take action in such circumstances. The police should not have to put up with this behaviour.’

Afghanistan Corruption: Study Says Taliban Influence Will Outlast U.S. Military Presence

The farmer picking apples in the outskirts of Kabul must pay the Taliban $33 to ship out each truckload of fruit. The governor sends in armed men to chase workers off job sites if the official bribes aren't paid. Poor neighborhoods never get their U.N.-provided wheat, long since sold on the black market.
These are some of the elements, large and small, that together form the elaborate organized crime environment Afghans contend with daily. And despite the hoped-for success of the U.S. military surge and President Barack Obama's claims of significant progress, Afghanistan's resemblance to a mafia state that cannot serve its citizens may only be getting worse, according to an upcoming report by the International Crisis Group, a Brussels-based think tank.
The 46-page study, to be released next week, looks specifically at Afghanistan's heartland: the rural areas of Ghazni, Wardak, Logar and other provinces just beyond the periphery of Kabul. Unemployment is high, government presence is low and the insurgency operates with impunity. Corruption and cooperation with the Taliban reach the highest levels of local governance.
"Nearly a decade after the U.S.-led military intervention little has been done to challenge the perverse incentives of continued conflict in Afghanistan," the research group says. Rather, violence and the billions of dollars in international aid have brought wealthy officials and insurgents together. And "the economy as a result is increasingly dominated by a criminal oligarchy of politically connected businessmen," the report concludes.

Rachel Weisz, Daniel Craig Get Married: Actress, Actor Wed In Secret Ceremony

Rachel Weisz and Daniel Craig have married in a secret ceremony, the News of the World first reported (via Daily Mail) and Celebuzz has confirmed.

The pair began dating while filming the movie, "Dream House"; Weisz had just the month before announced her split from director Darren Aronofsky after nine years and a child together. The ceremony was a small, private affair, with only four guests: Weisz's four year old son, Henry; Craig's 18-year old daughter, Ella; and two friends as witnesses.

"Daniel and Rachel insisted on having a small, quiet wedding. They are madly in love and couldn't wait to be husband and wife - but they wanted minimum fuss," a source told The News of the World.

Rumors began rumbling about their relationship in November; it was a country getaway vacation together a month later in which they first came out as a couple.

"Daniel and Rachel looked like a romantic couple in a film. They were laughing and hanging on to each other's words and stopping to take photos of each other," one witness said of their very public pub canoodling during the getaway. Added another: "They were clinging to each other like honeymooners. The chemistry was obvious."

Nude Artist Miru Kim Confronts Her Fears With Naked Photographs In Abandoned Buildings

Public nudity is a common fear for millions, but no one confronts it quite like artist Miru Kim.

Her body of work is, literally, her body, and she photographs herself in taboo areas, such as the catacombs beneath Paris or the suspension cables of Manhattan Bridge, and has even gone as far to get into a pig pen on her hands and knees in order to get at one with the creatures.

Is it working? It better, because the 30-year-old is getting a worldwide reputation as a provocative artist whose work appeals to art experts and casual viewers alike.

"I have always been timid since childhood," she told AOL Weird News. "Most people may think I'm joking considering my work, but it's true. [When I spoke at the TED technology, entertainment and design conference in 2008], I had to cross my leg and my arms both because they were shaking so much... I couldn't even say my name during interviews a few years back."

Kim first started disrobing for art back in 2004 and admits it was not easy at first.

"Now I'm used to it, but when I first tried to be nude in front of camera in 2004 I was very nervous," she said. "I remember, in order to get used to being nude for my project's sake, I modeled for a nude portrait for a painter in Berlin, who was my studio mate at the time, and I got so nervous I couldn't stand still.

"This was a mortifying and humiliating experience at the time. I had to force myself because I had decided
