Ground reality points at unlivable conditions with no drinking water or healthcare

On April 9, the Supreme Court ordered the Centre to file within four weeks a status report on basic amenities provided to two Rohingya camps in Delhi’s Kalindi Kunj and Haryana’s Mewat. Over the next three days, The Indian Express visited four settlements, including these two in Delhi, Mewat and Faridabad, and found practically unliveable conditions — with no access to drinking water, education, healthcare or sanitation. What also came to light were tales of women being denied reproductive rights and children suffering from malnutrition and diarrhoea.

Noor Fatima (23) is petrified of leaving her three-month-old daughter Shazia alone even for a minute, so she takes her everywhere — including when she has to defecate next to an open drain near her shanty in Shram Vihar.

“She was a month-old when a rat bit her all over the face. I was bathing and when I came back, she was covered in blood and it was nibbling her face. Is this any way to live?” she asks.

At the slum in Shaheen Bagh, 90 Rohingya Muslim families are spread across a cluster of privately-owned plots, which they have taken on rent. They have lived here since 2012, when, like a thousand others, they fled Myanmar because of religious persecution.

Semi-naked children with protruding bellies run around, stepping on faeces, slush, used band-aids, dirty diapers, broken syringes and bloody gauze. In the midst of the settlement is a bluish mountain of medical waste, right next to one of two hand pumps put up by residents. While some Rohingya Muslims work as labourers, many search through garbage to sell items and earn a living.

“We wash utensils at this pump, bathe here, and drink this water too. Everyone is sick here — breathing problems, malnourishment and stones. The children almost always have diarrhoea,” said Mohd Younis (28), who came to Delhi from Bangladesh in 2012, after fleeing the violence in Myanmar’s Rakhine State. SOURCE

IPS Officer Merin Joseph Perfectly Explains What's Rotten With Articles Objectifying Women

It's in common knowledge that internet thrives on objectification of women. From endless lists on 'wardrobe malfunctions' to obsession over female stars gaining or losing weight, objectifying women is a sure-fire traffic spinner for many sites. Magazines also routinely come out with annual lists of 'hottest', 'most beautiful' stars. While most women -- especially ones in showbiz -- have not been heard complaining against being featured in such lists, IPS officer Merin Joseph is not one of them.

So when, a vernacular daily compiled a list of India's 'most beautiful' IPS and IFS officers, Joseph promptly decided to put them in their place.

She pointed out that how, by handpicking a few officers as the 'most beautiful', the publication has trivialised the work they are doing. She also made it clear that they would rather be appreciated for their work, not their physical appearance.

Referring to the article, she wrote in a Facebook post: "This perfectly sums up what is wrong with the press in India, especially the vernacular press. Shameless objectification of women and propagation of patriarchal structures, reducing a lady's worth to her face value. These are bold and brave officers working in the complex bureaucratic system in India, negotiating their way through the good , bad and ugly of our body politic- and here we have a list of officers whom people can ogle at. It's seriously disgusting, constricting and very very demeaning to our identities as smart, intelligent self made women. Have you ever wondered why we never see a list of the most handsome males in the IAS and IPS ??"

Her post got over 2000 likes and more than 200 shares in a couple of days. It was heartening to see pretty much all the commenters agreeing with the objectification of women in the media.

Nation’s most expensive rental may be most famous for ‘Godfather’ horse head

The billiard room contains a massive stone fireplace mantel that Hearst brought from San Simeon.Last month, we brought you the nation's most expensive home for sale, Dallas' $135 million (or so the owner hopes!) Crespi-Hicks estate.

Not to be outdone, the Beverly House in Beverly Hills, Calif., is muscling its way into the stratosphere with what is believed to be the most expensive rental home in the nation: a staggering $600,000 a month.

You probably know the house without even realizing it: Remember the scene from "The Godfather" where a Hollywood mogul finds a horse head in his bed? That was filmed at the Beverly House. But the home has an illustrious history beyond that, too: William Randolph Hearst left San Simeon -- the California setting of his never-finished Hearst Castle -- to move into the Beverly House, which paramour Marion Davies bought for him in 1946. And John F. Kennedy honeymooned at the Beverly House with Jackie.

Plus, the Kevin Costner/Whitney Houston vehicle "The Bodyguard" was filmed there.

Some vital statistics: The 50,000-square-foot estate, at 1011 North Beverly Drive a few blocks above Sunset Boulevard, has 17 bedrooms and 29 bathrooms on 3.7 acres. The compound includes a guesthouse over an eight-car garage, a security cottage, a separate two-bedroom apartment, a four-bedroom gate lodge, two projection rooms, spa facilities and even an Art Deco nightclub. An outdoor terrace seats up to 400. The billiard room contains a massive stone fireplace mantle brought from San Simeon.

Curbed recently mapped the 10 most expensive rentals on the market, and the next closest competitor appears to be Pierce Brosnan's Malibu spread at less than half the price -- a mere quarter-million a month.

Secret energy lab spawns million dollar govt employee

The federal government’s dream of a renewable energy empire hinges on a scrubby outpost here, where scientists and executives doggedly explore a

    National Renewable Energy Laboratory campus

If you live outside Colorado, you probably haven’t heard of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory – NREL for short. It’s the place where solar panels, windmills and corn are deemed the energy source of the future and companies who support such endeavors are courted.

It’s also the place where highly paid staff decide how to spend hundreds of millions in taxpayer dollars.

And the public pays those decision-makers well:  NREL’s top executive, Dr. Dan Arvizu, makes close to a million dollars per year. His two top lieutenants rake in more than half a million each and nine others make more than $350,000 a year.

But what is really going on there? Energy expert Amy Oliver Cooke drove out to the site, which looks something like Nevada’s Area 51 with its remote location and forbidding concrete buildings. NREL had started a construction project and Cooke wanted to see for herself. She didn’t get far: a man in an SUV seemingly appeared out of nowhere, stopped her car, and told her to leave.

“A beefy looking fellow told me, ‘It’s top secret,’ said Cooke, director of the Energy Policy Center at the Independence Institute think tank. “I said, ‘I’m a taxpayer and I want to see what you’re building’ and he said it was it was ‘top secret so we can bring Americans a better future.’”

With its bloated budget and overseen by a $533 million a year government-funded management company, Cooke isn’t buying it.

“NREL has given us two of the most significant boondoggles, one of them being ethanol and the other being (bankrupt) Abound Solar,” she said. “They were part of the team that pushed Abound Solar along. In fact, they wrote in March 2011 on their website how proud they were of their role in abound solar.

NREL’s taxpayer-funded management company has seen its budget more than double since 2006. That’s when one of its most ardent supporters, Rep. Ed Perlmutter D-Lakewood, was first elected to Congress. The lab sits in the middle of his district.

But Perlmutter’s ties go beyond merely promoting green legislation and lobbying his colleagues for NREL funds. He has received $12,670 in campaign contributions from executives of NREL and its management company, MRIGlobal, a company that describes itself as “an independent, not-for-profit organization that performs contract research for government and industry.” Perlmuter’s father has served as a trustee for MRI and MRIGlobal during the past decade. Between 2003 and 2005, Perlmutter was also a trustee. These positions were unpaid.

Tea and sympathy for Kate as she puts on a brave smile but grim-faced William shows his anger after topless photo outrage

She had every right to be grim faced after a French magazine published topless pictures of her on holiday.

But in a show of unbelievable strength the Duchess of Cambridge managed to smile and laugh her way through a Diamond Jubilee tea party at the British High Commission in Kuala Lumpur this afternoon.

Kate, wearing an elegant ice blue lace dress by Alice Temperley, her hair pulled back in a bun and held in place with pearl-headed pins, sipped tea and chatted to several guests including shoe designer Jimmy Choo.

The couple announced this afternoon they had launched legal proceedings against the publisher of the French magazine.

Earlier, Kate appeared determined not to let the strain of the morning’s revelations show, smiling, laughing and chatting to Mr Choo without an apparent care in the world – although William at times did appear to have the weight of the world on his shoulders.

Mr Choo, who no longer has links with the company he created but says he still designs as ‘it is in his blood’ said: ‘I am very proud and delighted to have been invited.

'She is an absolutely beautiful person both inside and out. Very much like Prince’s William’s mother.’

Mr Choo worked with Diana, Princess of Wales for seven years and said Kate very much reminded him of her.

‘They are both elegant and wear fashion well but most importantly are very caring people inside which is why they appear so beautiful in public,’ he said.

Surprisingly the pair did not discuss shoes at length when they met but talked about the importance of education for young people, an issue Mr Choo is campaigning about on an international level and the duchess takes a keen interest in.

But he admitted that he would love to create for her. ‘Who wouldn’t? She is the style icon of her generation,’ he said.

‘She also told me how much she was loving visiting my country which made me very proud indeed.’

The Duke and the Duchess also watched a traditional Malay tea pouring ceremony before heading to the next leg of their south east Asia tour.

Away from the tea party the young Royals showed the strain of the day's revelations and appeared downcast as they left for the airport.

Missing Arkansas girl found safe; couple she lived with found dead

A missing 12-year-old girl has been found safe after authorities discovered the bodies of the couple she lived with, Arkansas police said.

Amber Whitlow was found Saturday night in Memphis, Tennessee, local police said. She was found with her 33-year-old brother, Antonio Whitlow, who is a suspect in her abduction as well as a double homicide, Memphis police spokeswoman Alyssa Moore said.

Antonio Whitlow is in custody, Moore said. Amber was taken to a children's hospital as a precaution, and the Tennessee and Arkansas departments of child services were notified.

Earlier Saturday, the man and woman whom Amber lived with were found dead inside a home in Little Rock, Arkansas, police said.

Authorities received a call from a man who attended the same church as the slain couple and had found the woman just inside the home's doorway, Sgt. Cassandra Davis said.

Officers investigated and found that woman and the dead man, who was further inside the residence. Both of the deceased were in their 60s, Davis said.

Authorities have not released the names of the couple, nor have they indicated how they died. But Davis said Amber is either the daughter or granddaughter of the deceased couple.

Many muslim woman in Indonesia choose to wear hijab or jilbab in local term and so with some of my friends and family.

The creativity of hijabbers in Indonesia has also inspired and influence the way other muslim woman in other countries wear their hijab and the world of Islamic fashion in general.

The limited option in term of wardrobe when wearing hijab seemed could not stop many young woman in Indonesia experimenting with fashion option and ways of wearing their hijab with attitude.

Combining various colors, pattern and texture into the typical hijab attire is how to wear a hijab Indonesian style makes the hijab colorful, form- fitting and incorporates different fabrics simultaneously.

Natural fiber is more preferable. Breathable, soft and cool materials as you see in these pictures above and below, are definitely intended to suit Indonesian climate.

Some list of materials often used for these hijabs in the market I often found are Cotton, Paris Cotton, Rayon Cotton- I like it myself very comfortable to wear and I like its hand's feel, Cotton Jeans, Denim, Combed cotton, All type of Spandex; spandex rayon, spandex cotton also lycra, Chiffon, Sateen, Jersey, Slumb Jersey, etc etc

At least 11 killed in single truck crash in Texas

GOLIAD, Texas - Authorities say a pickup truck has crashed in South Texas, killing 11 people in the vehicle and injuring 12. All 23 passengers were in the same Ford F-250 truck, according to officials.

Louann Presas, a spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Public Safety, says the crash occurred about 7 p.m. CDT Sunday near Berclair when the truck ran off the highway and crashed into some trees. The unincorporated community is about 100 miles southeast of San Antonio.

"The truck left the roadway and struck two very large trees," Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Gerald Bryant told The San Antonio Express-News.

According to Bryant, a total of 23 people of "a variety of ages," including some children, were in the vehicle. The victims have not yet been identified, he said.

The alleged driver of the truck was ejected but is alive, Bryant said. Six others from inside the cab of the truck were pronounced dead at the scene. Another five victims outside of the pickup also died at the scene, he said.

She says the extent of the injuries to the surviving victims wasn't immediately clear. Crash investigators were still at the scene around 11 p.m. CDT.

A Goliad County sheriff's dispatcher deferred comment to a department spokesperson, who did not immediately return a message left by The Associated Press.

Zuckerberg's Loan Gives New Meaning to the 1%

Billionaire Mark Zuckerberg is giving new meaning to the term "the one percent."

The Facebook Inc. (FB) founder refinanced a $5.95 million mortgage on his Palo Alto, California, home with a 30-year adjustable-rate loan starting at 1.05 percent, according to public records for the property.

While almost all lending rates have reached historical lows this year, the borrowing costs available to high-net-worth individuals are even lower if the person is willing to bear the risk of monthly interest rate adjustments, said Greg McBride, senior financial analyst with Bankrate Inc., a North Palm Beach, Florida-based firm that tracks interest rates. Large increases are unlikely anytime soon with the Federal Reserve signaling it will keep interest rates near zero for at least two years.

"When you can borrow at a rate below inflation, you're borrowing for free," McBride said in an e-mail. "This is the concept of using other people's money and it preserves financial flexibility for the borrower."

"The one percent" is a phrase popularized last year by the Occupy Wall Street movement to protest growing U.S. income inequality. The top one percent of Americans earns a fifth of the country's income and controls more than a third of its wealth, according to Joseph E. Stiglitz, a Nobel Prize-winning economist, whose book "The Price of Inequality," was published last month.

The average rate on a one-year adjustable mortgage was 2.69 percent on July 12, up from a record low 2.68 percent a week earlier, according to Freddie Mac, the McLean, Virginia-based mortgage-finance company. The average rate for a 30-year fixed loan fell to a record low 3.56 percent on July 12. Freddie Mac doesn't survey rates for loans that adjust monthly.

MSNBC host who argued fallen soldiers aren’t heroes is a woman

Ann Coulter took to Twitter to condemn an MSNBC host who said over Memorial Day weekend that he’s “uncomfortable” calling American soldiers who died in battle heroes. And in doing so, the conservative commentator jokingly called the male host — Chris Hayes — a woman. “Chris Hayes ‘Uncomfortable’ Calling Fallen Military ‘Heroes’ – Marines respond by protecting his right to menstruate,” Coulter posted on her Twitter account Sunday night. Hayes — a liberal writer who hosts the weekend show “Up with Chris Hayes” — argued that he’s “uncomfortable about the word because it seems to me that it is so rhetorically proximate to justifications for more war.” “I don’t want to obviously desecrate or disrespect memory of anyone that’s fallen — and obviously there are individual circumstances in which there is genuine, tremendous heroism: hail of gunfire, rescuing fellow soldiers and things like that — but it seems to me that we marshal this word in a way that is problematic,” he said.

Actor Michael McKean hit by car in NYC

Actor Michael McKean was hit by a car while walking along a New York City street on Tuesday, suffering a broken leg, the New York Post reports. Harriet Sternberg, his manager, told the Post McKean was being checked out at St. Luke's Hospital. “He has sustained multiple injures and we are trying to find out the extent of other injuries,” the Post quoted her as saying. McKean, 64, played the lead singer for the band Spinal Tap in the movie "This is Spinal Tap" among numerous other roles. He was to have performed on Broadway in Gore Vidal’s “The Best Man” on Tuesday night, the New York Daily News reported. “It’s the first time he will have ever missed a curtain in his entire life,” Sternberg told the Daily News. “He’s never missed stage, screens in film or television. His understudy has never gone on in 40-plus years.”

Hawaii sends Arizona verification of Obama's birth

A Hawaii official sent Bennett's office verification of birth for President Obama on Tuesday, according to both Bennett and Hawaii officials. Bennett said the issue is now resolved from his point of view. He has cancelled a planned Wednesday news conference where he was expected to discuss the issue. "I'm happy that we got what we asked for and that's what I was expecting all along," Bennett said Tuesday night. Bennett made national news earlier this month when he asked Hawaii to verify Obama's birthplace to ensure the President is eligible to appear on Arizona's November ballot. His decision reignited the simmering birther movement, though Bennett has said he doesn't associate with the birthers. On Tuesday Joshua A. Wisch, special assistant to the attorney general in Hawaii, said the matter had been resolved. "We have received information from Secretary Bennett that satisfied our requirement and has therefore provided his office with a verification of birth for President Obama," Wisch wrote in an email. 4 Degrees With 0% Unemployment

College grads who majored in actuarial science or astrophysics have a practically nonexistent unemployment rate. Actuary job in hand, before the degree Courtesy: Drake UniversityBette Wiebke Majored in Actuarial Science, Class of `12 Drake University Why become an actuary? My parents kind of planted the idea in my head from an early age, because math was always my favorite subject in school. Plus, they knew it would be a lucrative profession. An actuary is basically supposed to predict the future, estimating future risks and costs. Being able to do that well is so valuable to a company. This weekend, I graduated with my bachelor's in actuarial science. I've already had a job lined up since September, and I would say the same is true for the majority of my classmates, who have also had job offers for a long time. I'll be working at Travelers Insurance in St. Paul, Minn., in their property and casualty business. Overall, 0% unemployment in our field may be a bit of an overstatement. I know a couple students who haven't decided what they're doing yet. But the fact that most of us can get jobs coming straight out of college, definitely says something good about the occupation. No shortage of options in astrophysics Courtesy: Matt BenjaminMatt Benjamin Astrophysics, Class of `05 University of Colorado Boulder I was a business major when I started college, and science was a hobby more than anything else. But after I took two semesters of astronomy, I was hooked. Learning about business at that point almost felt as boring as learning about cardboard. I studied astrophysics and planetary science, and worked in the planetarium as a student employee. I had thought about going to grad school afterward, but when my boss decided to leave, I took this job. I now run the planetarium and its education programs. My job is to take complex science and information and put it in the public vernacular. It goes against the idea that to be part of science you need a Ph.D. That's a gross misconception. I think you can have a 0% unemployment rate in astrophysics, because it's constantly evolving. The universe is huge and there just aren't enough eyes to study it. There's really never going to be a shortage of jobs.

Lost 3-Year-Old Girl Rescued Thanks To a Dog and His Microchip

There have been plenty of stories recently about lost pets reunited with their owners thanks to microchips. But in this case, it wasn’t only the dog who was returned. The microchip implanted in a South Carolina dog helped police return the 3-year-old girl who was with him to their family as well, WJBF News reported. While her parents slept, the child apparently followed their newly adopted dog, Angel, outside. A resident in a nearby apartment complex spotted the pair and called the police. But when the girl wasn’t able to tell them where she lived, the authorities used a scanner to check the dog for a microchip. The chip gave the officers information on how to get the owner’s name, address and phone number, and they were able to return the girl and her faithful companion to their home. The girl’s parents wanted to protect their daughter’s identity and didn’t give reporters her name or theirs — but they did want everyone to meet the canine they called a “hero dog.” Even though he’s been a member of the family for only a week, the girl’s mother said Angel kept the child in his sight the whole time. A police officer said Angel didn’t even want to get into a separate police car from the girl for the ride home.

Competition Brews To Become ‘World’s Heaviest Woman’ In Guinness World Records

Competition Brews To Become ‘World’s Heaviest Woman’ In Guinness World Records:
A 32-year-old woman is attempting to become the heaviest woman ever, but her nearest competitor, a woman who holds the record of “World’s Fattest Mom,” is having a hard time letting go of her heavyweight claim to fame, even as she says she’s going on a diet.

Susanne Eman, a 728-pound woman in Casa Grande, Ariz., is attempting to get into Guinness World Records as the “World’s Heaviest Woman,” and hopes to reach her goal by the time she’s 41. The 2012 edition of the book will be released later this month.

The last woman to hold the title, 1,200-pound Rosalie Bradford, died in 2006.

“The category is currently open,” a Guinness representative told HuffPost Weird News. “We’ve got several claims that we’re researching, and we may have a new title holder very soon.”

Eman has told reporters that she wants to shatter the record by packing on 1,600 pounds. Her ultimate goal: weighing in at one ton.

One of Eman’s high profile rivals, Donna Simpson, of Akron, Ohio, holds the Guinness record for heaviest woman ever to bear children. She won the title by weighing a whopping 532 pounds when she gave birth to her daughter, Jacqueline, in February 2007 — an event that required 30 doctors.

Simpson just announced to the world via HuffPost Weird News that she’s decided to go on a diet, but she’s having a hard time letting go of the “prestige” that goes along with the honor of being America’s heaviest woman — and said she views Eman as an upstart trying to usurp her hard-earned fame.

“She’s Lady Goo Goo to my Lady Gaga,” Simpson laughed, adding that no one in the “feeder” community — a subculture of men who love large women — knows who Eman is.

“If she was a serious gainer, the community would know about her,” Simpson said.

Simpson said she suspects that Eman is in cahoots with her ex-manager and is trying to get publicity in order to compete for her fan base. Even worse: She accuses Eman of trying to take away her “World’s Fattest Mom” title.

“She says she’s surpassed me as the world’s fattest mom, but she doesn’t understand that Guinness gave me the record because I was 532 pounds when I gave birth,” Simpson said. “She wasn’t that large when she gave birth to her kids.”

Simpson also feels Eman is irresponsible for having her teenage kids feed her, as opposed to the adult “feeder/gainer” relationship she had with her former fiance, Philippe Gouamba, with whom she broke up a few weeks ago.
