  • Carey Mulligan & Hillary Clinton: Actress Turns Down 'Rodham' Role

Carey Mulligan has hung up her pantsuit, reportedly passing on the chance to play Hillary Clinton in the upcoming biopic, "Rodham."

The 28-year-old "Great Gatsby" actress was rumored to be the front-runner to play the former Secretary of State and First Lady. Mulligan met with "Rodham" director James Ponsoldt to discuss the role, THR reports, but she has since passed on the project.

Ponsoldt, who is directing the "Rodham" script penned by Young Il Kim, is considering some other big-name actresses for the part.

Scarlett Johansson, Amanda Seyfried and Reese Witherspoon are all still in the running to play Clinton. Jessica Chastain was originally rumored for the role as well, but distanced herself from the part earlier this month, denying her involvement by saying, "No, that's actually not true. I found out about the project online, but, yeah, there's a lot of stuff out there."

“They’re all wonderful actresses," Ponsoldt told The Independent. "We’re very fortunate that a lot of really great actors are interested in playing these roles. We’re in an enviable position.”

According to TheWrap, Jennifer Lawrence was also a possibility to play Clinton, but the actress was too busy to commit to the role.
