Hyundai jumps on i-bandwagon with hybrid i-oniq
Hyundai has been on a roll with styling and in-engine technology. Their new concept car, the i-oniq, signals Hyundai wants to build a range-extended hybrid just like the big boys.
Sexy range-extended hybridsare the hot trend for cool car companies like Porsche with the 918, Jaguar with the C-X75, Fisker with the Karma, BMW with the i8, and Infiniti with the emerg-e.
The i-oniq has a 108-horsepower electric motor, supported by a 1.0 liter 3-cylinder gasoline engine, an engine that Hyundai doesn't make at the moment. In electric-only mode, Hyundai claims the i-oniq has a range of 74 miles, but that almost sextuples when the combustion engine kicks in.
While it's not as futuristic as the turbine- and flywheel-powered concepts from some of the other carmakers out there, the i-oniq is at least one hundred million times more attractive than the i-concept car they showed at Geneva last year.SEE MORE
