  • Darby Township boy, Bailey O'Neill, dies after school fight

A 6th grader from the Darby Township School has died, two months since his altercation with another student.

One day after he turned 12 years old this weekend, the parents of Delaware County 6th grader Bailey O'Neill took him off life support.

"No more phone calls from him. No more hanging out. No one to say 'Daddy.' It's the worse feeling," father Rob O'Neill said.

The Darby Township School student was placed into a medically induced coma in January after having violent seizures.

Days before, Bailey's father says he was the victim of a bully and got into a school yard fight suffering a broken nose and concussion.

"He didn't want to fight that day. He wanted to walk away. And that's it. He wanted to walk away. It shouldn't have ever happened," Rob said.

Delaware County District Attorney Jack Whelan says at the least there could be possible simple assault charges against one of the two students involved.

He's working to find out if bullying was a factor and he's waiting on autopsy results to figure out what killed this seemingly healthy boy.

"I would hate to see anyone rush to judgment before really knowing the complete story of what occurred," Whelan said.

Bailey's story renewed the call for action against bullying.

His father has received support on his Battle for Bailey Facebook page and he's received calls from all over including the Philadelphia Flyers.

Local nonprofit Teach Anti-Bullying says the statistics are staggering but under reported. 34 percent of US students say they've been bullied during school.

"The dialogue has to be collaborative and those key players are your law enforcement in the community, your educators from the school board to the teachers in the classroom and the parents," Caludio V. Cerull of Teach Anti-Bullying said.

The Delaware County District Attorney's Office says it has opened an active criminal investigation.

Southeast Delco School District officials have said the district is cooperating with the investigation.

On Friday, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., there will be a public visitation for Bailey at the Cavanagh Funeral Home in Norwood.

The following is a statement from the Southeast Delco School District:

    Dear Southeast Delco School Community,

Late yesterday, we were informed about the death of Bailey O'Neill. Bailey was a sixth grade student at Darby Township School. Our school community is deeply saddened by this loss. Our condolences are with Bailey's family and friends during this very difficult time.

Surrogate offered $10,000 to abort baby

Crystal Kelley ran through the calendar once again in her head.

It was August, and if she got pregnant soon, she could avoid carrying during the hot summer months -- she'd done that before and didn't want to do it again. There was no time to lose.

But there was one problem: She had no one to get her pregnant.

Kelley picked up the phone and called a familiar number. What about the nice single man who'd inquired before -- would he be interested? No, the woman told her. She hadn't heard from him in weeks.

Disappointed, Kelley asked if there was anyone else who would hire her. She'd had two miscarriages herself and wanted to help someone else with fertility problems. Plus, she really needed the $22,000 fee.
Surrogate mom offered $10K to abort baby

Hold on, the woman said, let me see.

Yes, she said, there was a couple who wanted to meet her. Was she ready to take down their e-mail address?

    Absolutely, Kelley answered.

    A playground meeting

Most surrogacies have happy endings, and this one should have too -- with a couple welcoming a new baby into their home and Kelley enjoying her fee, plus the satisfaction that she'd helped another family.

Instead, it ended with legal actions, a secretive flight to another state, and a frenzied rush to find parents for a fragile baby.

After speaking with the surrogacy agency, Kelley, then 29, arranged to meet the couple at a playground near her home in Vernon, Connecticut, a suburb of Hartford. When she arrived, she liked what she saw. The couple was caring and attentive with their three children, who were sweet and well-mannered and played nicely with her own two daughters. The couple desperately wanted a fourth child, but the mother couldn't have any more babies. Yes, Kelley told them right then and there. Yes, I will have a child for you.

CNN made several unsuccessful attempts to contact the couple by phone and e-mail.

The couple had conceived their children through in-vitro fertilization and had two frozen embryos left over. Doctors thawed them out and on October 8, 2011, put them in Kelley's uterus.

About 10 days later, a blood test showed she was pregnant -- one of the embryos had taken.

Kelley and the parents were thrilled, and over the next few weeks, the mother was attentive and caring. When Kelley had morning sickness the mother called every day to see how she was feeling. She gave Kelley and Kelley's daughters Christmas presents. When Kelley couldn't make rent, the mother made sure she got her monthly surrogate fee a few days early.

"She said, 'I want you to come to us with anything because you're going to be part of our lives forever,' " Kelley remembers.

'There's something wrong with the baby'

"Congratulations! You made it half through!" the mother emailed Kelley on February 6.

It was one of the last friendly e-mails between Kelley and the woman who'd hired her.

A few days later, Kelley, five months pregnant, had a routine ultrasound to make sure the baby was developing properly. The ultrasound technician struggled to see the baby's tiny heart and asked her to come back the next week when the baby would be more developed.

At that next ultrasound, the technician said it was still hard to see the heart and asked Kelley to go to Hartford Hospital, where they could do a higher-level ultrasound.

Apparently, there was more to it than that.

As Kelley was driving home, her cell phone rang. It was the baby's mother.

Fancy Touch Screen fails Against Cheaper Clickers

The good: Sleek universal remote with beautiful-looking design; large color touch screen with custom virtual buttons and numeric keypad; recognizes limited gestures; Web-programmable via Windows or Mac PCs, but can edit commands without having to connect a computer; rechargeable via the included cradle; controls up to 15 devices.

The bad: Much more expensive than the superior Harmony 650; poorly placed "transport" buttons; lacks dedicated forward and reverse skip keys; limited customization options for the touch screen; nonremovable battery; no RF compatibility.

The bottom line: The Harmony Touch can't justify the high price of its touch screen compared with traditional multibutton universal remotes.
A touch-screen remote at first glance seems like an obvious evolution over the button-festooned scepters of yore, but the Logitech Harmony Touch is a significantly worse remote than many traditional universal clickers, like the superb and much less expensive Harmony 650.

The Touch evokes buttonless tablets and smartphones while still offering dedicated keys for the most important functions. Logitech's newest high-end remote sports a 2.4-inch color touch screen accompanied by 27 buttons, exactly half the number found on the Harmony 650. The $250 Touch features the same Web-based programming and activity-based controls (such as "Watch TV") that have made Harmony remotes so popular, but the focus is clearly on the touch screen, which takes up about a third of the length of the remote.

The screen has its advantages, including more flexible customization, the capacity to display a bunch of channel icons at once, on-remote editing, and support for a few gestures. But its main disadvantage -- the fact that you have to look down at the remote to make sure you're pressing the right virtual button -- is a deal-breaker for me. Logitech could have minimized this issue with better placement and selection of the hard keys, using the discontinued Harmony One as a model perhaps, but instead it plopped the screen front and center. Throw in the exorbitant price and the fact that you can circumvent Logitech's arbitrary device limit (more about this later), and there's simply no good reason to buy a Harmony Touch instead of a 650.

    Design and button layout
You might be tempted to buy a Touch if appearance and feel were your only criteria. It's probably the nicest-looking remote I've seen, and it fits great in the hand. The glossy black face is a bit of a fingerprint magnet but no more so than a phone or tablet. It arcs gracefully down from back to front and sexy curves extend around the softly textured back, for an easier grip than with larger wands like the 650.

13 Year-Old Cartel Hitman Found Murdered, Tortured

The body of a 13 year-old boy who had confessed to working for the Zetas Mexican drug cartel as a hired assassin was found alongside six others in the municipality of Morelos Thursday, CNN reports.

Authorities in the Mexican state of Zacatecas confirmed that Jose Armando Moreno, four women, and one other male were found murdered execution-style on the side of a highway in the municipality of Morelos. The bodies showed signs of torture and it is believed the boy’s mother is among the victims.

According to Univision, Moreno was arrested on Feb. 3 by the Federal Police. At the time, the boy admitted he’d been involved in at least 10 homicides, three of which he personally executed.

"After being detained, he confessed to authorities that he had participated in at least 10 homicides and that he was somebody who was good at shooting with a high-caliber weapon," Arturo Nahle Garcia, state’s prosecutor in Zacatecas, told CNN.

The boy was released in accordance to Mexican law which prohibits individuals under the age of 14 from being incarcerated or placed in correctional facilities. A similar case was brought to a Mexican judge’s attention in 2011; 14 year-old U.S.-born hitman Edgar Jiménez (“El Ponchis”) was sentenced to three years in jail after confessing to killing four people whose bodies were found beheaded and hanging from a bridge.

"I participated in four executions, but I did it drugged and under threat that if I didn't, they would kill me," Jiménez told reporters after his arrest in 2010, according to Reuters.

One of Most Polluted Neighborhoods Awaits Cleanup

Just across the East River from midtown Manhattan's shimmering skyscrapers sits one of the nation's most polluted neighborhoods, fouled by generations of industrial waste, overflow from the city's sewage system and an underground oil leak bigger than the Exxon Valdez spill.

It's easy to see - and smell - the filth in and around Newtown Creek, which runs through an area of working-class homes, warehouses and industrial lots straddling Brooklyn and Queens. The odor of petroleum mixes with the smell of sewage, particularly on rainy days when the city's treatment plants can't handle the volume and municipal pipes send trash and human waste straight into the creek.

Oily, rainbow-slicked water is filled with soda cans, plastic bottles, raw sewage and decaying food. Ditched vehicles are stuck in the mud on the banks. And what was once a creek teeming with fish, surrounded by marshland, is now a dull gray waterway that cannot sustain life.

"It's the byproduct of our society," says environmentalist John Lipscomb of the Riverkeeper clean-water advocacy group. "What was originally a watershed is now a sewage shed."

After generations of neglect, the first, small steps are being taken in a multi-pronged cleanup that could take at least a dozen years and cost hundreds of millions of dollars. But even the most hopeful officials acknowledge the watershed may never be clear of all pollutants.

There was a time when Newtown Creek was the city's industrial mecca. The Rockefellers operated the nation's first modern refineries on its banks in the late 1800s. Others quickly sprang up.

For much of the 20th century, the neighborhood teemed with commercial vessels and factories that made products as varied as fertilizers, chemicals, lumber and glue. Their oil and other hazardous waste was either dumped or leaked into the creek, bit by bit, accumulating at the bottom.

The first sign of the looming ecological disaster came on Oct. 5, 1950, when petroleum gases from the hidden spill seeped into the sewer and caught fire, causing an explosion that blew dozens of manhole covers three stories into the air, shattering windows in hundreds of buildings and ripping a street open. Three people were injured.

Liam Hemsworth Cheated On Miley Cyrus With January Jones?

Would Liam Hemsworth really cheat on Miley Cyrus?

A new report from Star magazine claims Hemsworth cheated on his superstar fiancee with "Mad Men" star January Jones at a pre-Oscar party this past weekend.

RadarOnline reports that the 23-year-old "Hunger Games" star showed up to the Chateau Marmont hotel sans Cyrus and cozied up to the 35-year-old single mother, who is recently single after splitting with boyfriend Noah Miller in January.

An eyewitness told the magazine the pair looked like they had some "hot chemistry," and "were all over each other -- and they even kissed."

The source claims the pair made an effort not to attract attention as they left together, staggering their exits, but it didn't work since photographers snapped photos of both actors together in a car.

Hemsworth and Cyrus became engaged in June, but sources told the magazine that when the 20-year-old pop star hit up Elton John's annual Oscar party on Sunday all by her lonesome, she was "all over the place" and "gave off the impression that she’s single." And when someone asked how Hemsworth was doing the insider claims Cyrus said she didn't care how he was doing.

It's not the first time Hemsworth has been accused of cheating on his fiancee. Last fall, sources claimed they spotted the Australian actor getting "very cozy" with a hot blonde at the Samsung Galaxy Note II party in Los Angeles on Oct. 25.

Requests for comment made by The Huffington Post to Hemsworth's rep have not been returned at this time.

Woman Tracked Down and Busted for Using Restaurant's Customers-Only Bathroom

When you gotta go, you gotta go. But sometimes, it’ll cost ya.

That was the lesson one woman learned, in a major way, after making a bathroom pit stop at a local restaurant in Erin, Tennessee.

More on Shine: What Can I do to Avoid Germs in a Public Restroom?

The bizarre tale began when Patricia Barnes stopped into the Flood Zone to use the restroom, which she did, before leaving without making a purchase. Then, a few days after her powder-room visit, Barnes received a handwritten note—mailed to her home—saying she owed the restaurant $5.

“I just feel like I’ve been violated,” she told WSMV-TV in Nashville, whose reporters broke the story last week after a several-month investigation (the incident occurred in late October). In addition, she said on the Today show Thursday, "I didn't feel it was a crime. I'd been in to plenty of restaurants here in this town, and other towns, and, you know, other states."

Turns out the local sheriff helped track Barnes down by running her license plate, all as a favor to the owner of the restaurant. The owner was miffed that the non-customer ignored a sign about the bathroom being for customers only, and that non-customers had to pay $5 for the privilege.

"She was one of these I'm-going-to-do-this-anyway kind of people," Flood Zone proprietor Lisa (who would not give her last name) told Yahoo! Shine. Barnes, she said, came into the restaurant, "looked up at the [wall] menu like she was going to order, said 'Let me just wash my hands,' stayed in the bathroom for, like, 20 minutes," and then left. Lisa explained that she'd only recently put up the sign about the $5 charge, and that it was in response to a broken toilet at the convenience store across the street sending "12 to 15 people a day" to her bathroom, which caused constant messes that no one had time to clean.

But Barnes, who could not be reached by Shine, told WSMV-TV that she had first asked permission to use the facilities.
