Rajinikanth, in a message to his fans, said though he wanted to invite all of them to the marriage, he was unable to do so because of space constraint and logistic reasons. "Hence, with a heavy heart, I took a decision not to invite you. But I request you all to bless the couple," the superstar said.
The wedding was attended by high-profile people like Union Home Minister P Chidambaram, Telegu star and Praja Rajyam President Cheeranjeevi, Kamal Haasan and actor Surya with wife Jyothika among other big names.
Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who will be seen with Rajinikanth in mega-budget 'Robot', attended the engagement last night along with husband Abhishek Bachchan.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and a host of other high profile guests are expected to attend Soundarya's wedding reception this evening.
Rajini himself supervised all the arrangements for the wedding. According to reports, the actor has gifted a brand new apartment to Soundarya, who is the CEO of Ochre Productions.
Soundarya's animation film 'Sultan The Warrior', starring the superstar, is set for release this year. Rajini has lent his voice to the lead character in the project, with music by A R Rahman.

Arora theatre shuts to revamp for Robot release

As Rajnikanth's 'Robot' nears release, Arora theatre, a Mumbai- based theatre, famous for screening Rajni's films closed for renovation on Sunday 19th September. While it is the first time a theatre has shut its business to prepare for a release, theatre owner, Mr Nambi Rajan believes it's only fair. He said, "I don't want to disappoint the Rajni fans. Rajni's release is like god is coming to cinema. In south India, his releases are like festivals and people paint their homes, so I am painting the theatre and remodeling the seats."

To manage these renovations, Arora theatre will be shut for four days. The revamp was scheduled assuming the initial release date of September 24, but now that it has been postponed to October 1st, the theatre owner is hardly hassled. While the Rajni mania grips one and all, this is the first time when a theatre actually closed doors to renovate when a commercially successful film ('Dabangg') was being screened. Nambi Rajan who is himself a devoted fan of Rajni adds that any expense incurred for Rajni's film is worth it. He says, "My theatre is going to close after this film. There is a proposal to construct a multiplex in its place but I was just waiting for the release of this film."

It's famously cheap but Asda's boss says his food isn't good enough - is he right?

Nothing epitomises Asda’s cheap and cheerful image better than the self-effacing little yellow label it puts on reduced foods.
The labels read: ‘Oops’ — a jokey way to shift food that has to be quickly sold or removed from shelves.
However, having to knock £1 off a chicken reaching its sell-by date is nothing compared to the gaffe new Asda boss Andy Clarke made last week.
Mr Clarke stunned business analysts by admitting the supermarket’s food isn’t up to scratch. The fruit, vegetables, fish and meat for sale in the company’s 377 stores is not good enough, he said.
‘Food quality is something Asda hadn’t been as focused on in the past as it should have been,’ admitted Mr Clarke.
Yet for decades, Asda has boasted of championing consumers by forcing down food prices. Loyal customers swear by the allure of good-quality at rock bottom prices — a message that has been rammed down our throats by the ‘Asda price’ adverts launched in 1977, in which customers tap their pockets twice, producing a chinking sound, as the coins they’ve saved knock together.
But it’s not just cost today’s discerning food shoppers care about. Ingredients, additives and knowing exactly where their food has come from is now just as important. Many customers are also prepared to pay more for quality, hence the popularity of supermarket premium lines.
So what’s the truth about Asda food — can it really as bad as Mr Clarke claims?

In a statement, a spokesperson from TLC said: 'We support Buddy and the Valastro family during this very difficult and challenging time. The network respects the family's wish for as much privacy as possible, and as this doesn't involve us, we will not be commenting any further.'
Cake Boss chronicles Buddy's over-arching desire, in the words of the TLC website, 'to achieve his late father's dream of making Carlo's Bake Shop a household name with or without the help of his family.'

Red Sox claim Johnny Damon on waivers

Johnny Damon was told Monday by the Detroit Tigers that he had been claimed on waivers by the Boston Red Sox, but the outfielder said he was mulling over the move.

Damon, 36, has until Wednesday afternoon to decide whether he will go to the Red Sox, for whom he played from 2002 to 2005. Damon has a partial no-trade clause in his contract and Boston, where there were hard feelings by fans after he bolted for the New York Yankees, is one of the clubs he can veto.

    Marlins finances divulged

The Florida Marlins made big profits with baseball's smallest player payroll in 2008-09, and team President David Samson says the income was needed to ensure being able to borrow money for a new ballpark.

Team financial statements acquired by Deadspin.com show the Marlins netted $49 million during the two seasons, with operating income of $37.8 million in 2008 and $11.1 million 2009. Samson didn't dispute the figures during a conference call.

The Marlins had the lowest player payroll in the majors both seasons — $22 million in 2008 and $37 million in 2009.

Florida's new home is expected to open in 2012. Total cost of the project is estimated at $609 million, with the Marlins paying more than $120 million.

    Former umpire Davidson dies

Satch Davidson, the plate umpire when Hank Aaron hit home run No. 715 on April 8, 1974, to surpass Babe Ruth as the all-time leader at the time, has died. He was 75.

Davidson's family said he died Saturday at his home in Houston. The family did not give a cause of death.

Davidson spent only three years in the minors before getting hired as a National League umpire in 1969. A bad back forced him to retire after the 1984 season.

Shanna Moakler Makes $100K By Throwing Tantrums

Shanna Moakler, The stories about dangerous, young adults have been afraid to threaten a staple of B-movies and bad TV for decades. But recently, adolescents tend to be portrayed in a more pleasant light (“High School Musical,” “joy,” the phenomenon of Justin Bieber). So I was happy to see the frightening issue-teen return with a vengeance in “Bond of Silence” (9 pm, Lifetime), starring Kim Raver (“24″).
Like many tragedies of television, “Bond” begins in yuppie heaven. Beautiful wife Katy McIntosh (Raver) is the preparation of soup when her handsome husband and running triathlete attorney Bob (David Cubitt, “Medium”) out of the shower and gives her a hug. What could go wrong?
Against the background of this scene of domestic bliss, a year-end party gathers across the street, full of underage drinkers and young people without supervision. What could go wrong?
When the game outside the field of play awakens his daughter, Bob brings a team of responsible parents to approach and talk some sense into the children confused.
Only Bob never returns. Taken to hospital after being found unconscious in the chaos drunkard, was supposed to die of a heart attack. Again, studies, seems to have been beaten or kicked to death and that one (or many) of children killed by a loving husband and father.
This is where the real mystery and where “Bond of Silence” begins to spin out. The film never decides whether it is the search for justice for Katy (the natural course of a Lifetime movie) or a test of conformity to the school students’ near-pathological aversion to tipping. This last topic was covered much better in the dark 1986 independent film “River’s Edge.” In trying to tell both sides of this sad story, real life, “Bond opts for a rather bland average.

Miss Universe 2010 Is Miss Mexico Jimena Navarrete

Meet Miss Universe 2010: Miss Mexico Jimena Navarrete was crowned Miss Universe 2010 during the Miss Universe pageant at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas on Monday night.

The stunning brunette from Guadalajara inherited the title from Venezuela’s Stefania Fernandez and beat out 83 beauty queens from all over the globe — including Miss USA Rima Fakih — on stage in Sin City. In fact, the 22-year-old nature enthusiast defeated favorites from Ireland, the Philippines and Venezuela to become the 59th winner of the crown in a show broadcast live around the world. In a major shock, this year’s Miss Venezuela failed to make it past the first cut, when the 83 contestants were whittled down to 15. Miss USA, another favorite, was also eliminated early on.
Navarrete is Mexico’s second Miss Universe; Lupita Jones of Mexico won the title in 1991. Navarrete’s title comes with a package of prizes — including an undisclosed salary, a luxury New York apartment with living expenses, a one-year scholarship to the New York Film Academy with housing after her reign is complete, plus jewelry, and shoes and a new wardrobe.
Miss Jamaica Yendi Phillipps was crowned second runner-up. Miss Australia Jesenti Campbell is second runner-up. The Miss Congeniality Universe award went to Campbell, while Miss Thailand Fonthip Watcharatrakul won Miss Photogenic Universe and a second award for having the Best National Costume.
Miss Universe joins Miss World as the most publicized beauty contest in the world. California clothing company Pacific Mills founded the contest 1952 and it was acquired by Donald Trump in 1996.

    The Miss Universe Pageant

Miss Mexico won the Miss Universe title Monday night, but that wasn’t the pageant’s biggest surprise.
Heck, we could think of seven of them:
    1. Donald Trump, announcer. The Donald provided intros between segments. What? Don Pardo was busy?
    2. Chi is apparently some big hair product. At least that’s what the ads said.
    3. NBC must be on hard times. Other than the Chi ads, the show was filled with commercials for upcoming NBC shows.
    4. Breast implants are out of fashion.
    5. Criss Angel, judge?
    6. Bret Michaels, host?
    7. “Apprentice” contestants are lurking. Could the judges be likely finalists for the reality show’s next lineup?
Bonus: The “Viva Elvis” people don’t miss a chance to push their show. How many times will we see the plastic Elvis wigs before the end of the year?

Amazing Bird Flies 11,000 km Nonstop, Without food or Rest

How is it possible to fly 11,000 km without a single break? The bar-tailed godwit does it by consuming only 0.41 percent of its body weight each hour during its eight-day-long flight.
Every autumn, the bar-tailed godwit undertakes the eight-day journey from Alaska to New Zealand.
The bird flies non-stop, without once breaking the journey to rest or eat. Then when spring comes, the bird makes the 11,000 km journey back to Alaska.
Professor of Ecology Anders Hedenstrom from the Lund University, Sweden has pondered over how this species of bird can fly so far without stopping. The distance is twice as far as previously known non-stop distances for migratory birds.
Hedenstrom emphasises that the bar-tailed godwit is far superior to all aircraft constructed by humans when it comes to the art of flying for a long time without a break, according to a statement of the Lund University.
The long-distance flight record for aircraft is held by the QinetiQ Zephyr, an unmanned solar-powered craft. It can remain airborne for 82 hours, around three-and-half days, compared with the bar-tailed godwit's eight-day flight.
But what is it that makes the bar-tailed godwit able to fly 11,000 km without pausing to stop? How can these birds manage without sleep or food for eight whole days?
One explanation is that they consume unusually little energy compared with other species of birds. Anders Hedenstrom has calculated that the bar-tailed godwit consumes 0.41 percent of its body weight each hour during its long flight.
'This figure is extremely low compared with other migratory birds,' he says. However, other factors also play a role. It is important to have the right ratio of body weight to size to be able to carry sufficient energy for the entire flight.
The energy mainly comprises body fat, and to some extent also protein. It is also important to have an aerodynamic body shape so that air resistance is minimised. A further success factor is flight speed.
The bar-tailed godwit is a quick flyer, which means that it can cover long distances in a reasonable time.
A comparison can be made with a completely different group of long-distance travellers from the animal kingdom - eels.
To complete the bar-tailed godwit's 11,000 km journey would take the eel 345 days, according to Hedenstrom.

    TRIBES:WONDERFUL Tribes of Africa Wallpapers

    http://www.trendsone.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/wonderful_tribes_africa_Funzug.org_10-230x345.jpg

The Daasanach or Dassanech tribe is one of the ancient tribes of Africa. These pastoralists live in three different East African countries, Kenya, the Sudan, and Ethiopia. They number some thirty-thousand and the center of their population is near Lake Turkana in the Debub Omo Zone of the Lower Omo Valley of Ethiopia. The neighboring Turkana tribe calls the Daasanach people the “Merille” tribe. Recently, many Daasanach have been converted to agriculturalists as have many tribes of Africa. This is primarily a result of their losing access to their traditional territories in Kenya and the Sudan Unfortunately, their new way of life as agriculturalists has forced them to live near permanent water sources on the Omo River where diseases such as sleeping sickness transmitted by the tsetse fly has been taking its toll on this and other native tribes of Africa. The Daasanach tribe speaks a Cushitic language in the Afro-Asiatic linguistic family unlike many of their neighbors such as the Surma (Suri), Mursi and Nyangatom tribes which speak languages in the Nilo-Saharan family. “Shangilla” is a derogatory term that some of the neighboring African tribes use for the Daasanach tribe.  Similar to many tribes of Africa, the Daasanach have various clans which are inherited by patrilineal descent. In addition, their society recognizes various age sets which determines ones position in many of the traditional tribes of Africa.

The Shotgun family, however, ensured that her private life remains unblemished. And free of tattle for gossip periodicals.
Word has it that as a cover up operation the family cannily put out the word that Sonakshi had broken up with her reported love interest of many years.
And whadya know guys, a little sparrow in cinebiz trilled to us that the duo are very much together… and what's better, were spotted walking hand in hand around the bylanes of suburban Mumbai. So much for 'Operation Cover Up'.

Secret of Mona Lisa Smile Revealed

The famous smile of Mona Lisa, the magnum opus of Leonardo da Vinci, is no more a secret as scientists have decoded the technique how the Renaisance-era painter created a special effect to show the enigmatic expression.
According to the experts, the artist managed to achieve his trademark smoky effect, known as sfumato, on the painting by applying up to 40 layers of extremely thin glaze thought to have been smeared on with his fingers.
The glaze, mixed with subtly different pigments, creates the slight blurring and shadows around the mouth that give Mona Lisa her barely noticeable smile that seems to disappear when looked at directly.
With the help of X-rays, the researchers were able to see how the layers of glaze and paint had been built up to varying levels on the face, The Telegraph reported.
With the drying times for the glaze taking months, such effects would have taken years to achieve.
The findings also suggest that he used his fingers to apply the glaze as there are no brush marks or contours visible on the paintings.
The new discoveries have been made by scientists at Laboratoire du Centre de Recherche et de Restauration des Musees de France and the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility.
Writing in the scientific journal Angewandle Chemie, Philippe Walter, who led the study, said: 'The perfection of Leonardo da Vinci's painting technique has always been fascinating.
'The gradation of tones or colours from light to dark is barely perceptible. Above all, the way the flesh is rendered gives rise to many comments because of its crucial role in the fascination exerted by Leonardo's portraits.
'Even today, Leonardo's realisation of such thin layers still remains an amazing feat,' Walter said.
The team also studied skin tones in six other of Leonardo's most famous paintings, including 'Virgin of the Rocks', 'Madonna of the Carnation', 'Saint John the Baptist' and the 'Virgin and the Child'.
Walter and his team believe that Leonardo experimented by creating different types of glaze and with different pigments to perfect the sfumato effect.

Perera fires Sri Lanka into tri-series final

Dambulla: Thisara Perera bagged a maiden five-wicket haul to help Sri Lanka storm into the triangular One-day series final with a crushing eight-wicket win over India on Sunday.
The 21-year-old seamer, playing his first match of the tournament, finished with 5-28 off 7.4 tight overs as India were shot out for 103 in 33.4 overs - their third-lowest total against Sri Lanka in One-Day Internationals.
The total was not enough to put pressure on Sri Lanka, who completed the win in just 15.1 overs in the day-night match in Dambulla. The hosts finished their league engagements with 11 points from four matches, while New Zealand have seven points and India five after three games.
The winners of the last league match between India and New Zealand on Wednesday will qualify for the final. "He (Perera) had a fantastic game today and really won us the match," said Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara.
"We would also have batted first had we won the toss. But our bowlers bowled a great line and length right from the start. We have got a varied attack."
Sri Lanka put in a solid all-round performance in the must-win match as their batsmen backed their fast bowlers, with Tillakaratne Dilshan (35) and Mahela Jayawardene (33) adding 79 for the opening wicket in 9.2 overs.
Sangakkara (13 not out) finished the match when he drove paceman Ishant Sharma through the covers for a four. Upul Tharanga remained unbeaten with 12.
"We didn't get the kind of start we needed. Their bowlers bowled in the right channels and pushed us into making mistakes," said India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni. "Our next game (v New Zealand on Wednesday) is like a semi-final now."
Yuvraj Singh earlier top-scored with a fighting 38 in a disappointing Indian batting performance after the tourists elected to bat. Opener Virender Sehwag (12), Rohit Sharma (11) and Dhoni (10) were the others to reach double figures.
Yuvraj was unlucky to be given out leg-before off paceman Lasith Malinga (2-21) as TV replays suggested the ball would have missed the stumps. He was the ninth man out after hitting one six and five fours in his 64-ball knock.
Sri Lanka jolted India when paceman Nuwan Kulasekara (2-31) trapped Sehwag leg-before and had Dinesh Karthik (nine) caught behind in a lively opening spell.
Man-of-the-match Perera, who played his last One-dayer in Zimbabwe in June, then wrecked the middle order when he claimed four wickets in five overs to dash India's hopes of posting a challenging total. He was once on a hat-trick when he had Ravindra Jadeja caught by Chamara Silva at gully and Praveen Kumar caught by Tharanga at mid-off with his next delivery.
Perera ended the innings in the 34th over when he bowled Ishant Sharma. The Sri Lankan pacemen were well supported by wicket-keeper Sangakkara, who took four catches.

Heidi & Karissa: Girl-on-Girl Sex Tape

    http://ll-media.tmz.com/2010/08/21/0821-heidi-shannon-tmz-ex2-credit.jpg
We're told not too long ago Spencer was at the Malibu house he once shared with Heidi ... moving out some of his stuff.  Sources tell us Spencer came upon a camera with XXX video of Heidi and Karissa -- and the light bulb went off.

Sources say it was then that Spencer decided he could make a fortune selling his "library" to Vivid Entertainment -- much of it featuring naked, fornicating Speidi.

We could not reach Heidi and her reps were mum.

As for Karissa Shannon -- she tells us such a tape does indeed exist, but she's not convinced Spencer really has it. Karissa says if the tape ever sees the light of day, she'll sue the pants off him.

Then again, he might enjoy that.

Team India eyes revenge vs Zim

After the humiliation they suffered in the ODI tri-series, India will look to make amends and take revenge against giant-slayers Zimbabwe in the first Twenty20 International here tomorrow.

Here with a second-string team, India were dumped out of the just-concluded tri-series after suffering back-to-back defeats against the spirited Zimbabweans.

The host team, which lost the tri-series final to Sri Lanka, would be plotting another shocker for the Indians tomorrow.

The break that followed their tri-series ouster has given Suresh Raina's men enough time to chalk out their plans to avoid another stunner from Elton Chigumbura's fighting side.

The key to India's success is batting and the line-up is desperately missing the heavyweights, who were rested from the series.

Dinesh Karthik and M Vijay are not exactly the ideal opening pair for Twenty20s as both the batsmen are known to take their time in settling down at the crease before attempting strokes.

In fact, the duo couldn't make much of an impact in the ODI series failing to score any memorable knock.

Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Raina himself are the men in form and would look to continue their run in the two Twenty20s.

A lot would be expected from Twenty20 specialist Yusuf Pathan, who would be aiming to prove his worth after being dropped from the ODI squad for the upcoming Asia Cup owing to poor run of form.

On the bowling front, the Indian spin attack would be bolstered by the arrival of Piyush Chawla as Amit Mishra and Pragyan Ojha have not made a mark so far on the tour.

The pace department is not too impressive either with the Ashok Dindas and Umesh Yadavs conceding too many runs for too few wickets.

Zimbabwe, on the other hand, are high on morale despite the tri-series final loss to Sri Lanka. The team has shown the stomach for a fight and they would be looking to continue just that.

Their batsmen showed decent form in the ODIs and would be looking to be slightly more aggressive in the shortest format of the game.

Hamilton Masakadza, Tatenda Taibu and Charles Coventry are proven performers and the Zimbabweans would be hoping to get some explosive knocks from them to surprise the Indians once again.

When Jahan Kumar became Jahan Bloch

Joginder Tuteja, Bollywood Trade News Network
Jahan Bloch. Or is she Jahan Kumar?

A lot is there in the name. Daughter of Mehul Kumar, the film makers who made many a 'masala' flicks during the 80s and the 90s, Jahan carries the surname Bloch. 'Now where did this one come from', one is tempted to ask?

This is what the young girl has to say. "Our family's surname has always been Bloch. My dad is basically Mehul Bloch and that stems from the fact that my forefathers have been from Baluchistan, hence the surname. However, my father chose to be called as Mehul Kumar in Bollywood", says Jahan who is making her screen debut with KRANTIVEER - THE REVOLUTION, the sequel to Nana Patekar-Dimple Kapadia starrer KRANTIVEER.

Why didn't she also opt for the surname Kumar?

"Well, it would have looked a little funny to be called as Jahan Kumar", she smiles, "A Kumar is generally associated with guys. Also, I love the sound of Bloch and hence chose to be called as Jahan Bloch. Today, I have found my identity and I am proud to be known with this name."

Talking about the film, Jahan reveals that her inclusion came during the scripting stage itself.

"Dad was in the process of writing the script and as the role of this girl became quite powerful and challenging to enact, he asked me if I would be interested in playing it. Of course, I didn't have to think twice about it. I was game for it and soon found myself preparing for it. Now that the film is just a few weeks away from release, I can't wait to see how audience acceptance comes in", she signs off.

    Aruna Shields goes nude

    Bollywood Trade News Network
After Bollywood hotties like Nandana Sen and Sherlyn Chopra, the relative newcomer Aruna Sheilds is next to bare it all in front of the camera!

Aruna Shields, who made her debut in bollywood with PRINCE alongside Vivek Oberoi, is creating huge waves for her new film MR SINGH MRS MEHTA. As the bold actress will be seen posing nude for a particular sequence in the movie. Just like Hollywood actress Kate Winslet did in supremely successful film TITANIC, Aruna plays muse for a nude painting, and that is her turning point. For a girl who is trapped in middle class morality, to reach a point where she not only poses naked in front of a man who is not her husband but also doesn't care what the world will think when the painting becomes public

Aruna Shields has gone for a complete image makeover with her new film MR SINGH MRS MEHTA, which releases on June 25. From a desi Bond babe, Shields has transformed herself into a girl-next-door from a small town in this film.

Shields plays Neera Singh, an agony aunt columnist who discovers her husband is cheating on her. Also starring Prashant Narayanan, another Brit Asian actress Lucy Hassan and Naved Aslam, the film is written and directed by Pravesh Bhardwaj and produced by Manu S Kumaran and Tutu Sharma.

MR SINGH MRS MEHTA is the story of Ashwin Mehta (Prashant Narayanan) and Neera Singh (Aruna Shields) who find that their spouses are having an affair. Drawn together by shame and anger, they find comfort in their growing friendship, even as they resolve not to be like their unfaithful mates.

MR SINGH MRS MEHTA also marks the debut of world renowned sitarist and Grammy nominated artist Ustaad Shujaat Husain Khan as a music composer.

Unlike other foreign actresses who end up being one-film-wonders in Bollywood, with Mr Singh Mrs Mehta, Aruna Shields is definitely here to stay

Stewart wants to perform at theatre

The 20-year-old actress, who plays Bella Swan in the vampire franchise, wants to be on stage at the London's famous West End theatre, although she wants to start off in a small production, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

'Unlike movie acting, you have to deliver the whole performance there and then. You live it every night. But anything I do will be small,' said Stewart.

Stewart is said to be keen to appear on the West End after seeing her model-actor friend Eddie Redmayne star in 'Red' at the Donmar Warehouse theatre in London.

She is in talks with the theatre producer and director who have given her potential projects to consider. The actress is now busy promoting the third installment of the 'Twilight' series which will premiere in the US June 30.

    Kangy Busts Scalpel Saga!

Kangna Ranaut is quite, quite amused. Tattle over her enhanced twin assets (ahem) and fuller lips, have almost forced Kangy to respond to the grapevine buzz with a plausible explanation.

Reportedly, Kangy has been asserting to the scribe tribe that her more voluptuous frame is courtesy… a weight gain of seven kgs; a feat she's expressly… thrilled about!

Declares Kangy in a tabloid chat, "Not only my breasts, but my overall frame has expanded. I do plan to lose the weight, most people have been complimenting me on my weight gain."

Adds she, "But I do feel that it does make me look older. Though secretly, I do like myself this way and have not started going to the gym or doing yoga. On screen, my hollow cheeks look fuller and better, after the weight gain." Weighty matters, eh?

And the World Cup winner is...

Quit stressing over the winner of the FIFA World Cup!

A Zulu sangoma, after a night of dreams and consultations with the ancestors, looks into the future to see the winner of the 2010 World Cup.

The 70-year-old fortune teller, a cheerful lady called Constance, plays a critical role in Zulu culture, blessed with special powers to heal and divine the future.

But she was mighty hard to find.

A two-day search aided by street sellers and shop owners in the southern city of Port Elizabeth had produced nothing but a series of false dawns.

It appeared one needed a sangoma to find a sangoma.

Then a toothless lady of indeterminate age kneading dough on a pavement beside a taxi rank suggested trying a muthi herbal specialist off Govan Mbeki Road.

The shop, an Aladdin's cave of pills and potions and ointments, had a high counter behind which were two people.

One, a man, had his face painted in tribal warpaint.

The other, a woman, was Constance.

"You've made it," she smiled, as if she had been expecting the visit all the time.

After negotiating her fee, Constance opened a door into a storeroom packed with sacks of dried roots and animal hides hanging from a makeshift washing line.

Through a curtain at the back was her "office" -- with a frayed floral couch, more bags of herbs and plant extracts, and shelves crammed with somewhat incongruous tins of Jeyes Fluid household cleaner.

"I use all this to make my medicines," she said, easing her generous frame into a chair beside, which was a small table with incense and a yellow candle.

"When someone comes to me and wants me to help them with trouble in their life or look into the future, I get them to light this candle. That way I can see through them, I can see what the problem is," she explained.

"I help cure people who are mad or who have AIDS using 'muthi'."

Constance has been a sangoma for 12 years.

"My father and my sister were sangomas, and when they died they came to me in a dream and told me 'you have to be a sangoma now'," she said.

"I didn't want to, but they made me ill. They hit me with sticks, I couldn't walk.

"They sent me into the sea for seven days to sleep. When I woke up I accepted to become a sangoma.

"I went away to train for one year. Then my ancestors came back to me and said 'you can finish the training now, you are a sangoma'.

"I then slaughtered five goats and one cow."

She says she has many clients, rich and poor, black and white, old and young, who turn to her for a multitude of reasons.

"People come to me because they have problems sleeping, or with their marriage, they want to know the future, or they are ill. I help them all."

Football players also turn to herbalists for potions, balms or talismans to boost their performance or treat injuries.

More than 30 percent of African athletes use traditional medicines, according to one survey.

Johannesburg's Ellis Park stadium is a hop from major medicine markets, and an ox was slaughtered at the showpiece Soccer City site to bless the 10 World Cup pitches.

Asked about the World Cup, Constance shuts her eyes, as if asleep, in meditation, then opens them sharply.

"All the teams here are strong, but I have to consult my ancestors, I have to ask them what they think, and they will tell me in my dream tonight.

"Come back tomorrow, and I will have your answer." The next day, Constance is again waiting behind the counter, with the answer not to eternity but almost as important.

"Argentina will win the World Cup."

Is a kiss worth jail+90 lashes?

They know it is banned, yet they still don't let that fact cut any ice with their love life, or passions!

A Saudi court has convicted a man and sentenced him to four months in prison and 90 lashes for kissing a woman in a mall.

The government-owned daily Al-Yom reported on Thursday that Saudi religious police arrested the man and two women after they were seen on mall cameras "engaging in immoral movements in front of other shoppers."

The report says the man, who is in his 20s, was seen with a woman "sitting on one of the chairs, exchanging kisses and hugs." It's unclear what the other woman was doing.

The kingdom enforces a strict interpretation of Islam, which bans unrelated men and women from mingling.

The paper says the man is to receive three batches of lashes and is banned from malls for two years. The women will be tried in another court.

    2010 Suzuki Swift Spied On

Auto spies never cease to amaze me; this time with the spy shots of the 2010 Suzuki Swift prototype. Slated to break cover at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, the refurbished version of Suzuki’s best-selling model is expected to be Swift by name and swift by nature. In spite of the heavy camouflage, it’s very clear that the new Swift will retain its curvy looks. The stylishly revamped head and tail lamps are clearly evident in the spy shots.
These spy shots have been doing the rounds since mid 2009. Now, a Hungarian website has released more revealing shots of the new Swift [see the gallery below]. A curvier rear, a pronounced slot for the license plate and the ‘waterfall’ tail-lights and more rounded rear-view mirrors are easily recognisable.

According to Autocar, the new Swift is expected to offer more passenger space, with an increase in the wheelbase very likely. The car, however, still sports a non-independent suspension at the rear. The engine that powers this car is also likely to be carried over – it’s an evolution of the K-series (K12) motor that powers the current Swift and Ritz. Variable Valve Timing is expected on the European car, and this could come to India as well, just like it did with M16A on the SX4. Suzuki will also continue with the very successful 1.3-Multijet from Fiat, or DDiS. What is clear, however, is the fact that Suzuki seems to have gone the VW way – its new model is very evolutionary.

THE GREAT FAKE TAN TEST BEAUTY-CONFIDENTIAL

Fake Bake is the first self-tanning brand to include new ingredient DMI which promises a faster, longer lasting colour with more intensity. But do you really get better results by spending more on premium products? We tested 25 top brands (including the new Fake Bake), costing from £4.50, to one at £67.
Clarins Delectable Self-Tanning Mousse, £20 (clarins.com)This feels luxuriously creamy as it's a whipped mousse rather than a spray. it is easy to over-apply, however, and takes a while to dry. Our tester ended up with streaks, due to getting dressed only 20 minutes after applying. Apply sparingly, especially on fair skin. 7/10
    Adonia Bronzing Glow, £39, (michaeljohn.co.uk)
Out of all the sprays we tried, this was by far the best. it gives a great colour after a couple of hours, but go easy when applying, and always blend well with your hands. This luxurious spray smells beautifully of bergamot and citronella. The bottle is lovely, too.  9/10
Soap & Glory Glow Getter Spray, £10 (Boots)Sprays tend to be more difficult to get a blended, streak-free look, and this one is best used by experienced selftanners only. The spray can also make a mess of the area around you, so stand on a towel. Gives a good colour, though. 6/10
adonia bronzing glow    Sisley self tan spray   Soap & Glory Glow Getter
    From left: Adonia Broxing Glow, £39, michaeljohn.co.uk, Sisley Self-Tanning Spray, £67, 020 7591 6380, Soap & Glory Glow Getter Spray, £10, Boots
    Sisley Self-Tanning Spray For the Body, £67, (020 7591 6380)
A clear spray that smells amazing, this requires a little work to get it perfect. But if you blend well and let it dry properly, it gives a great colour. The spray is easily directed and the finished result is a healthy glow, rather than a deep colour. 9/10

Phytomer Creamy Self-Tanning Gel For Face and Body, £27, (01753 827 600 or thebeautyroom.co.uk)This clear gel is good for using on the face, as well as the body. it is easily blended, despite not being able to see where you've put it. perfect for more mature skin as it's more moisturising than some others, and won't develop into a too deep shade. 8/10
Matis Sun-Kissed Glow Body Lotion, £27, (01322 290101 or matis-uk.com) This gives a natural, sun-kissed colour. however, it is not ideal for those looking for a deep colour, as it gives a gradual tan, and should be used for a few days to build colour. But it smells delicious and is perfect if you are looking for a light, golden glow. 8/10

SexyHair Aero Tan Instant Temporary Tanning Spray, £13.25, (beautybay.com)
This gives a good tan with the right application, although the aerosol can makes it difficult to direct properly, and it does make a mess.  Also, it must be blended instantly to avoid streaking and isn't great on fair skin as the colour is deep. 7/10

M&S Suntan Self-Tan Spray for Face and Body, £7.50, (marksandspencer.com) A no-fuss no-frills spray from Marks&Spencer. it takes a few applications to get a deep colour, but if you've used self-tan products before and are confident with sprays, it will do the job. 8/10
Top tip: When using a self-tanning spray, spray downwards in fast
strokes so that the mist settles lightly onto the body
Top tip: When using a self-tanning spray, spray downwards in fast strokes so that the mist settles lightly onto the body

Solait Tinted Bronzing Gel For Face and Body, £4.50, (Superdrug) This is in a rather offputting deep brown tube, which makes you think it's very dark. it isn't, but it does streak if you're not careful. Allow half an hour's drying time and re-apply after a couple of days as some of the colour came off in the bath after 24 hours. 6/10
lavera Sun sensitive Self Tanning Spray    Lush Charlotte Island     st tropez
From left: Lavera Sun Sensitive Self Tanning Shimmer Spray, £15.50 (lavera.co.uk), Lush Charlotte Island Body Tint, £9.95 (lush.co.uk, St Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Mist, £30, (st-tropez.com)
Soleil Beauty Bronzing Mist Spray, £6.50, (Tesco)
Not the easiest tan to apply, as the spray tends to squirt more than you really want. But once it was on and blended it looked good, especially on darker skin. Unfortunately, it came off on the sheets and faded considerably after a day. 6/10

Avon Magic Tan Moisturising Self-Tan Lotion, £8, (avonshop.co.uk)
This is great value. it takes around three hours to develop and works well on fair or medium skin, giving a fairly light coverage. There's no mess and it's a pleasant-smelling lotion. 5/10

Origins The Great Pretender Shimmery Self-Tanner, £15, (origins.co.uk) Definitely the best smelling, but it's an instant 'wash-off' tan. Great for a last-minute boost before going out. 8/10

    TANNING TIPS

    • tess daly
Tess Daly, right, the TV presenter who has her own range of face and body products (including Daly sun Tan, £7.50) at M&S, suggests: 'Once you have applied the fake tan, always go over the dry areas with a damp cloth or wet wipe to stop those areas grabbing too much colour and going too dark and obvious. less is more with fake tan, so go for a light shade.'
    • James Read, celebrity tanning expert at the Agua spa at The sanderson (0207 300 1414) and founder of thetantalist.com, is the Uk's top spray tanning expert. 'When using a self-tanning spray, spray downwards in fast strokes so that the mist settles lightly onto the body,' he advises. 'Do this all  over the body. When it comes to the back reach over each shoulder and spray directly on to your back. lean forward immediately to allow the mist to settle, then spray the lower half of the back from below.'
    • Katherine Mackenzie Paterson, spa therapist at london's spa illuminata (0207 499 7777), suggests: 'The best tip for getting the bottom half of your legs more tanned is to apply two layers of colour. Apply one before you go to bed, and then in the morning, if you still feel you would like a darker colour, whip another layer on. And don't forget to mix the self-tanner with moisturiser (half of each) over the knees.'
Fake Bake Self Tanning Lotion, £22, fakebake.co.uk.
We had high hopes for this, especially as it contains a 'triple tan booster' (Dimethyl isosorbide or DMi) and is supposed to work faster and last longer. But though easy to apply (it is a gooey, dark brown liquid so it's obvious where it is going), the tan lasted only two days on our fairskinned tester. 7/10

St Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Mist, £30, (st-tropez.com) It a bit messy and sludgy straight after application, but it's worth it for a tropical-looking tan. it's not as instant as some fake tans but the colour is so natural and glowing that we didn't mind all the prescrubbing, moisturising and careful spraying. We found it best to apply at night, wait for it to dry and go to bed. After showering in the morning it produced a gorgeous tan. 9/10
Garnier Ambre Solaire No Streaks Bronzer Dry Body Mist, £10.99 (boots.com) We reAlly liked this product, it was easy to use, dried instantly and there was no need to rub it in. No streaks or patches, and we liked the fact that the tan built up gradually with each application. The only downside was the smell  -  it wasn't bad, but it was noticeable. 9/10
Lee Stafford Fake My Tan, £8.99(boots.com)
This claims to produce an 'olive not orange' hue, and we agree. it took quite a while to get an even colour with no streaks, but it was worth it for the effect. After a few hours' wear, it washed off easily in the shower. A pleasant smell, too. 8/10

Lavera Sun Sensitive Self Tanning Shimmer Spray, £15.50 (lavera.co.uk)
As it's a spray it was difficult to do the back of the legs and we found it was running off the skin before we could rub it in. it is also colourless, so you can't see where you have already applied it. Our tester used it on an area of skin that hadn't seen any sun and liked the natural shade. But overall, not easy to use and it took too long to dry. 6/10
Lush Charlotte Island Body Tint, £9.95 (lush.co.uk)
This applies very well and smells lovely thanks to all its natural ingredients. {erfect for pasty-looking legs that need a quick colour boost before a night out. it gives an instant tan that is very subtle. 9/10

Garnier skin Naturals Summer Body Moisturising Lotion, £4.99 (boots.com)
Allows the user to gradually build up a tan to the shade they want. After applying it for three days it produced a lovely colour. The only downside was that it left our tester's skin a little greasy. 8/10

    Guns N' Roses
Rock and Roll, er, rain: No, not the latest England bowling attack - but rock gods Guns N Roses did understand the problem of rain...
12.45: Yep, so lunch is taken. Gower interviewing cricket's finest baby-faced assassin Stuart Broad in the media box. Still looks interminably gloomy at Lord's. Forecasts say it could all clear up after lunch...
12.30: Next pitch inspection at 12.45bst. Good weather for ducks etc.
12.15: Wow, reading Zimbabwe did India in a one-dayer in Bulawayo. You couldn't make it up! as one columnist might say at this paper...
12.00: Still drizzling in north London which means.... nay cricket. Brollies up and I would not bet against no play before lunch. Or even an early lunch. And there is talk of an early lunch. Reading on the DM website that West Ham are chasing Beckham, Henry and Joe Cole. The world's gone mad!

11.45: Absolutely nothing going at Lord's. Still watching England tear into the Aussies in Barbados which, let's face it, is inestimably more interesting than some of the cricket on offer at Lords these past two days...
    Wet weather
Braving the elements: Oh what a summer's day for cricket fans at Lord's
11.30: Replays showing England doing the Aussies at the T20 earlier this month. All very nice - but does not bode well for any sort of immediate start at Lord's...

11.10: Raining cats and dogs in St John's Wood just now. Starting time - anyone's guess.
10.50: We’re back for day three and the covers are on. Not the most auspicious starts for England after a frustrating day in the field yesterday. Forecasts are for sporadic showers across the day in north London. On Thursday I thought this game would be over in three days – no chance.
Teams are: ENGLAND: Strauss (capt.), Cook, Trott, Pietersen, Bell, E Morgan, Prior (wkt), Bresnan, Swann, Anderson, Finn
BANGLADESH: Bangladesh: Kayes, Tamim, Siddique, Jahurul, Ashraful, Shakib (capt.), Rahim (wkt.), Mahmudullah, Shahadat, Robiul, Rubel

10.50: England’s bowlers lacked some vital punch yesterday – what can they do today?? Not much early doors. It's bucketing down at the home of cricket. Play set to start late....

     Tamim Iqbal
Run out: Tamim Iqbal is run out on day two at Lord's

Sex kitten Pixie Lott embraces the feline look as she goes clubbing in London

To celebrate the final concert on her tour with Rihanna, Pixie Lott clearly thought it was time to unleash her wild side.
So the 19-year-old vamped it up in a sex kitten outfit as she went clubbing in London this week, slipping into a zig-zagged leotard and striped tights.
She finished off the look with a pair of cat ears and painted black whiskers and a nose on her face, accentuating the look with stacks of leopard-print bangles around her arms and a matching clutch.

The blonde songstress treated her friends to a night at posh club Boujis. She and her entourage arrived in black stretch Hummer and emerged dressed as cats.
She held hands with a male friend as she entered the club and, clearly thinking ahead - whipped out a cat mask which she used to disguise her disheveled appearance as she left.

Not content to call it a night at almost 4am, Pixie continued on to club Jett Black.
Pixie was clearly planning to celebrate, tweeting before she hit the town: 'Last show of the tour...so excited for tonight gonna make it the best one! crazayy.'
Her next 'tweet' the following day was testament to her large night, revealing she was 'looking forward to putting the feet up and having a dvd night with the girls tonight.'
She won't be able to relax for too long, however, as she prepares for appearances this summer at festivals including the V Festival and iTunes Festival.

Another day, another fashion disaster as Britney Spears dons see-through dress, Ugg boots and trilby

Only Britney Spears is capable of taking several fashion no-no's and rolling them into the one outfit.
The singer, notorious for blatantly shunning the advice of stylists, revealed another display of her poor fashion sense today when she stepped out in a see-through nightie-style dress, trilby hat and ugg boots.
To make matters worse, she unwisely chose bright red underwear which could clearly be seen through the poorly-fitting dress.

Spears, 28, stepped out in Beverly Hills for a spot of shopping as it was revealed she is the first Twitter follower to amass five million followers.
Despite the fact most of her 'tweets' on the social networking site come from her management team, Spears' popularity has seen her beat popular tweeters Ashton Kutcher and Lady GaGa to the milestone.

Spears has another reason to celebrate after it was revealed this week she had sacked her manager Jason Trawick so they could pursue their blossoming romance.
The couple were first linked two years ago, but have had an on-off relationship.
They chose to stop working together to allow their romance the best chance of success, perhaps thinking of the old adage 'never mix business with pleasure'.
